Good Friday everyone and thanks as always for dropping by the blog. We have been advertising a very stormy and wet period for several days now and it appears we are on the cusp of what may turn out to be one heck of a heavy rain producer over the weekend into early next week.
Before we get to the overall setup for the weekend… let’s talk a bit about the weather today. Rounds of showers and thunderstorms will be rolling eastward across the state. These will have locally heavy rains with them and we will have a shot at some strong or severe storms later this afternoon into the evening. Round number one will be rolling across the region as we start this Friday then we may catch a break before the next cluster of rain and storms moves in. Radar should be lighting up through the day…
If we can break out into some sunshine this afternoon… the threat for strong or severe storms will be on the increase. That will be especially true for central and western Kentucky and points south and west. The Storm Prediction Center has much of the state outlined for a slight risk for severe weather…
Here is a little different map for the SPC showing the risk area, the latest watches and radar…
A front moves into the area later tonight and puts the brakes on as low pressure begins to develop across the southern plains by later in the weekend. This front will hang around into early next week and will be the focal point for torrential rainfall as clusters of rain and storms move over the same areas day after day. Here is a map I have drawn for you showing the cause for concern…
The FLOOD THREAT reaches from eastern Oklahoma all the way to the northeastern states. That puts our region squarely in the risk for high water this weekend. Here is my first call on rainfall…
Man… that’s a lot of rain and the totals could actually go higher than what I am showing. Let’s hope we can get enough space in between the rounds of storms to preclude any significant flooding. I don’t like the setup for this weekend, though and will have many updates and will likely do some video updates.
Keep checking back with the blog for the latest updates on this Derby Weekend as it should be a busy one. Have a great Friday and take care.

Hmm…a month’s worth of rain in just a few days. Sounds like we better get the pontoons out….and maybe the boats, just in case!
Stay on higher ground if you live in lower areas that are prone to flooding. Once the rain sets in, flood watches may come out for certain areas.
Thanks for the heads up Chris. My kids are signing their lease today,a nd we are going to try and get some of their furniture moved in and out of storage between bouts of rain. That way, it won’t cost them another month of storage fees.
I have to tell you that I do not look forward to so much rain in such a short period of time. I really need to get out and get a couple more plants put into my flower garden….
too bad there is not some way to store ths up for the drier summer months….
thanks, Chris. Will be checking back often today, and tomorrow especially!
thanks for all you do.
The grass seed I planted is going to float away!!
The Mods are having a field day today.
I know it’s spring but will the rain ever end my taters are going to rot in the ground! LOL! Will be keeping a close eye on the weather this weekend. Thanks Chris!
Slight Risk now expanded into the Bluegrass!!
I think it was 2007 when it rained up until May, then we went into severe drought after that. So I’m happy to see the rain and the green leaves and grass.
Moderation sucks.
HPC has Chris beat with a 7.2 inch bullseye over richmond from storms through tuesday.
GOODNESS !!! Winter doesnt wanna let go in the upper midwest!!
*******MONTANA SNOWSTORM***********
Hardest hit was the St. Mary area, where 5 feet of snow with 12-foot drifts pretty well closed down St. Mary, according to Johnny Noe, the new general manager and co-owner of the St. Mary Lodge. “The worst of this storm was from about midnight last night to 3 a.m. this morning,” Noe said Wednesday. “We were getting about 2 inches (of snow) an hour. It was just pounding, pounding, pounding.”
Many daily, 2-day and 3-day snowfall records were broken; the NWS has a detailed list [PDF]. Great Falls set their 2nd highest daily snowfall total on record, and Bozeman broke their all-time April snowfall record..

I can only imagine those poor folks are just dying to see sunshine and 70*!!
I haven’t put any flowers out yet. I must do that. Good luck, coffeelady!
Ohhh, Chris, man…geez!:(
My very FIRST Derby in almost 47 yrs. of life, and it’s (poss.) going to be ruined by RAIN!!! The one time I actually get to dress to the Nine’s and now it looks like I have to revert to Plan B: The Hefty Cinch-Sak….LOL!:)
I’m going to give up on getting tomatoes in the ground. I think I’ll look for rice seed.
Gardengram, your comment about the rice seed made me laugh out loud! How funny!!
A quick question – has Rolo posted his Derby pick yet? I am really curious who he likes.
Yea..WHERE IS ROLO lately??! 🙁
I’m going for “Mine that Bird” or “Hold Me Back”…I have weird ways of pickin’ ’em, but I’m usually either in the top 3 on the last 15 out of 18, either way it goes. Better when I was a kid & bettin’ against Granpa-not so much NOW, so don’t hold me to those picks!?;))Might be a muddy track, so it could be anybody’s race!??!
Dunkirk will win the derby… Put him in your exotics w/ Papa clem, Friesan Fire, I want revenge, Hold Me Back and Summer Bird…
Good luck all…
…
Chris, are we going to need to get Tim to get the Ark out of storage befoe this thing finally lifts out of here? With the probability of 7 inches of rain, we will ALL be riding around in boats!
Hope you guys have a GREAT Derby weekend. I’m going shopping. (Gotta find a dress for the mother of the bride.)
