Good Thursday to one and all. The showers and storms of the past few days have been rather scattered across the region giving us some nice periods in between… hence the word SCATTERED. The bad news is that the rains and storms will become more widespread as we go through the next several days and this will take us into Kentucky Derby Weekend.

Today finds a warm front draped across the Ohio valley and this front will be leading to a couple of rounds of showers and thunderstorms. Here is the radar for your tracking pleasure…

There is a greater chance for strong or severe thunderstorms today and that is something for us to keep an eye on. The best threat is across parts of Western and Central Kentucky. Here is the latest risk map from the Storm Prediction Center…

Latest Day 1 convective outlook

Damaging winds and large hail are the main threats… and even those are marginal as of right now. There is a lot of moisture and increasing instability over the next several days and the setup is one that can lead to some heavy rains. We have been talking about this threat for several days now and the pattern I am looking at is one that should put down quite a bit of rain around here.

That does not bode well for Kentucky Oaks Day or Derby day…

GFS Friday Evening

There is the chance for severe weather on Friday as well…

SPC Day 2 0600Z Outlook Categorical

If you are one of the thousands going to Churchill Downs for the run for the lilies on Friday… keep track of the weather situation to be on the safe side.

Derby Day Saturday doesn’t look a whole lot better right now…

GFS Saturday Evening

Here is hoping we can get a lull in the showers and storms for the Derby. The problem with the weekend is the flow becomes parallel with the front itself causing the front to put the brakes on and stalling it out over us. This is the focal point for rain and thunderstorms that would then continue into Sunday…

Stalled out fronts around this time of year make me a little nervous because they can become big time rain producers. Repeat showers and thunderstorms form along the same areas and can put down a whole lot of water and even rounds of strong or severe storms. Do not be surprised to see some areas pick up 3″ or 4″ of rain from now through Monday. The blog will continue to follow this threat and have updates as needed.

Looking a little farther down the road… I see a stormy pattern rolling on into the middle of May in what is sure to be a wetter than normal month ahead. Some of the models are suggesting the eastern US gets hot and humid by this time next week. I like the humid part but am not sold on the hot part as we will have a wet ground and maybe even more storms to deal with.

That’s all I have for you right now. I will have updates as needed so be sure to check back. Have a great day and take care.
