Good Thursday to one and all. The showers and storms of the past few days have been rather scattered across the region giving us some nice periods in between… hence the word SCATTERED.
The bad news is that the rains and storms will become more widespread as we go through the next several days and this will take us into Kentucky Derby Weekend.
Today finds a warm front draped across the Ohio valley and this front will be leading to a couple of rounds of showers and thunderstorms. Here is the radar for your tracking pleasure…
There is a greater chance for strong or severe thunderstorms today and that is something for us to keep an eye on. The best threat is across parts of Western and Central Kentucky. Here is the latest risk map from the Storm Prediction Center…
Damaging winds and large hail are the main threats… and even those are marginal as of right now. There is a lot of moisture and increasing instability over the next several days and the setup is one that can lead to some heavy rains. We have been talking about this threat for several days now and the pattern I am looking at is one that should put down quite a bit of rain around here.
That does not bode well for Kentucky Oaks Day or Derby day…
GFS Friday Evening
There is the chance for severe weather on Friday as well…
If you are one of the thousands going to Churchill Downs for the run for the lilies on Friday… keep track of the weather situation to be on the safe side.
Derby Day Saturday doesn’t look a whole lot better right now…
GFS Saturday Evening
Here is hoping we can get a lull in the showers and storms for the Derby. The problem with the weekend is the flow becomes parallel with the front itself causing the front to put the brakes on and stalling it out over us. This is the focal point for rain and thunderstorms that would then continue into Sunday…
Stalled out fronts around this time of year make me a little nervous because they can become big time rain producers. Repeat showers and thunderstorms form along the same areas and can put down a whole lot of water and even rounds of strong or severe storms. Do not be surprised to see some areas pick up 3″ or 4″ of rain from now through Monday. The blog will continue to follow this threat and have updates as needed.
Looking a little farther down the road… I see a stormy pattern rolling on into the middle of May in what is sure to be a wetter than normal month ahead. Some of the models are suggesting the eastern US gets hot and humid by this time next week. I like the humid part but am not sold on the hot part as we will have a wet ground and maybe even more storms to deal with.
That’s all I have for you right now. I will have updates as needed so be sure to check back. Have a great day and take care.

UGH!! I know we need the rain, but I just love sunny spring days! I am so HAPPY winter is over!!
I love seeing everything greening up. However, this spring weather has killed alot of softball and baseball teams this year.
Chris is right, normally you wouldn’t see it get hot with such wet ground…but last week we hit 87 at my house and that’s with a wet ground and above avg. precip. for April. So who knows? It’s nuts around here.
Ugh, Chris! Still shopping for a heat pump. Have no a/c right now, so I am liking the cooler weather. I need to find one that I can actually afford!
Well, we can use the rain. It split us yesterday, and we did not get much. A friend of mine who lives in McCreary County said they got quite a storm yesterday afternoon. We saw it, but it missed us.
Well, I guess the word of the day is “scattered” as you said, Chris. Thanks for the update.
refering to the twitter update: the W.T young Library is the BEST library by far in the region 6 floors, 2 new computer labs at least 6 seperate study rooms the writing center, a refrence floor entensive books for all subjects and community newspapers for every town in kentucky. check it out if you have time folks. go cats!
I’m bummed that derby day forecast isn’t looking better, oh well!
Well for some reason my backyard has missed out on every rain event in the past couple of days…LOL…nothing more than sprinkles here, BUT, now in Barbourville to my north and WIlliamsburg to my south BOTH got heavy rain showers yesterday…I could use a good rain shower on my garden about now, so maybe I’ll get lucky today…hope everyone has been doing well, my big surgery day is coming up soon so I’ve been trying to enjoy the outside as much as possible before the dreaded day arrives…and saturday is my wedding anniversary so the wifey and I hope to have a weekend getaway. FINGERS CROSSED THE BABYSITTERS DONT BACK OUT AT THE LAST MINUTE!!!…LOL..LOl….later gang!!!
Hows the back old man? Had a decent rain here yesterday.
12z nam has 4-6 inches of rain over the remander of the week and weekend for us.
You have central air with a unit outside? Did the outside unit die? I have the repair guys coming to look at mine today…I think it’s on it’s way to the deathbed too.
Too bad the “death star” is sinking…I’m sure a few thousand students jumping up and down inside didn’t help that situation.
Rain has moved out up here in Northern Ky. Hope it stays dry until at least after sunset…
Must be the Central Air Virus. Mine too has went out on me. Got the repair guys coming tomorrow on mine.
For the most part, it has been pretty pleasant here in Richmond. I’ve had windows open and there is a nice breeze blowing. Not much rain here today. Just spotty sprinkles.
Hey everyone! Not been much for comments lately, but I read everyday. The rain has totally skipped over us for the past 2 days, but I’m not complaining. I’m sure we’ll get our fair share this weekend…bummer…too bad it has to be on the weekend! 🙁
