Good Tuesday, everyone. This is another day of severe storms and flash flooding across our part of the world. Lines of showers and storms continue to push into the region and these can have a devastating impact. The flash flood threat continues to be through the absolute roof.
Deadly flash flooding hit parts of eastern Kentucky on Monday… Just unbelievable flooding and my fear is we see something similar somewhere in our region again today. One round of thunderstorms moves through early this morning with another round developing this afternoon and evening. Damaging winds and flooding rains will be again be possible.
I have your tracking toys for the day…
Today’s risk area
Current watches
I will keep you updated all day long on WKYT-TV. Take care.
Incredible rainfall rates in Jefferson County…St Matthews getting pounded again with 4″/hr rainfall rate while another automated gauge in eastern part of the country registered a 5.40″/hr rate
You’re right Mike, incredible rainfall. The Mets in the Metro that were predicting the sky would fall failed. That’s good but some were sure that widespread damage with power outages for days was going to happen. They need to back the hype machine down a little.
I don’t know if you’re referring to Jefferson County in general, but Louisville’s meteorologists cover an extensive viewing audience, many of those residents did receive widespread damage. Certainly, I would not say that this event was overhyped, just Louisville’s portion did not contribute as much thankfully.
It is storming like crzy in northwest Lex right now. LOUD THUNDER winds heavy rain.
Same in Woodford! Scary lightning!
Covering everything like a champ on the overnight. Great work CB! Looks like you can hopefully squeeze in a cat nap after this line comes through right now.
I dare say that some place between Louisville over towards Ashland down towards Pikeville is going to end up with an incredible 10 inches of rain + total for the entire week beginning from this past Sunday morning!!!
Thanks Chris for all of your hard work and keeping us informed…

Nice catch on the photo.
More impressed that the dude has some a seriously clean windshield on that car.
Meanwhile, down in Australia, they’ve got the Antarctic Vortex going on with their winter.
What’s happening in Australia?
No power since 3:30 yesterday when first line came through. Now I get to head in for a long day on the grand jury. Can we be done with rain and storms for a couple of weeks?
The very bright and loud storm woke me up at 1:45.
I turned on WKYT and there was our man, Mr. Bailey, keeping up with all the action.
Thank you, Chris!!!
My yard looks like somebody poured confetti all over it, but it’s actually leaves that have been diced into tiny pieces. Something very powerful roared over Bourbon County yesterday afternoon.
It was like a big fireworks show outside all of our homes for long periods of time through the early morning hours.
This line has now hit Knoxville. Amazing how it held together so long.
Warm moist air is like a Hotwheel race track.
Thank you, Chris for keeping us all informed 24/7, both here and on Twitter, and warning us ahead of time about the severe threat of these storms! I know I can always count on your forecast to prepare for crazy weather like this!
Now, whoever is still doing a rain dance…please stop! LOL
Is there a simple explanation as to why the leaves that blew down yesterday look like they’ve been run through a blender? I am sweeping my deck and not seeing a single leaf that isn’t shredded.
That sounds like large hail got to them if they are shredded
That is a good answer because we’ve had hail storms that did the exact same thing to the leaves.
However, I was home during yesterday’s storm and it didn’t hail. It was so dark outside and the wind was very strong, but no hail.
It’s very mysterious!!
Getting ready to head to my mothers outside of Morehead. Hopefully things are ok. Cannot get a hold of her and was not able to get out and check. Amazing some of the pictures I have seen from around. Sad to hear about missing people and deaths. Hope this evening is does not have none of the same.
Stay safe everyone. And thanks CB for keeping the updates coming.
Was everything ok?
Yeah, just got back. Electric was out and water had shorted the phone box out. But the water did not make it into the house.
We didn’t get any of the rain here in BG. All the storms stayed to the east of us. We just have the heat and humidity. Current heat index is 109.
Weinberg was bashing NWSLMK on the 6 pm news. He said the placement of the Severe Thunderstorm Watch was incorrect and shouldn’t include counties near the Metro. Jefferson Co. just had a WARNING! That’s great!!!!
I was just thinking about that when I came to this forum. I heard him say something about scratching his head about why the slight risk was in play and if we’re scratching our heads too. Remember though, ours would be the rogue warning he mentioned about…(Mike S scratches his head)
Weinberg always does that. I mean the NWS and all the mets in Louisville deserve a bashing for all the doom and gloom they kept predicting all week.
75-80 mph winds and power outages for days. I don’t think so.
There absolutely was doom and gloom with these storms the last few days, just because 75-80 mph winds didn’t happen in your backyard doesn’t make it a hyped up event or forecast. Other areas in the Louisville viewing area did receive winds over 65 mph winds with wind damage. You got to remember the mets and the NWS in Louisville have huge real estate they cover many many many counties.
So is this it? After today, is this pattern OVER? Please!
Have you looked at next week yet!?!
Looks like another awful situation unfolding across the area.. Thoughts and prayers to everyone losing their homes, cars, and loved ones.
If my math is right, Frankfort has now the 5th wettest July on record, at 8.06″ as of 9:30 edt this evening.
dose anybody know the rain amounts for lex. over the week & total for the month to date?
4″ of rain in 24 hr period of July 14th….total rain fall since July 10th….9″….Wet/soggy Lawrenceburg….
