Good Friday folks. Let me start out by saying a big thanks to each of you for all the snowfall and real time reports from you with this latest winter storm. Did I say winter storm? Yes I did as many areas across southern and southeastern Kentucky picked up more than 4″ of snow which is a winter storm!
I have seen some reports of 6″ of heavy, wet snow. Here are just a few of the snow pics we received…
Crystal in Pikeville
Nothing like writing in the snow! ![]()

Not too bad for the middle of March and I am glad that all our friends in the south finally got in on some good snows after missing out all year long. Congrats my friends! ![]()
I am VERY pleased with the forecast we put out for this storm. I will start with the call from two weeks ago that a false start to spring was ahead of us and that winter would be back by mid month. Well… two days after 80 degree temps we have a snowstorm. I think that call worked out pretty good. I was in full blown spring mode last week and early this week and wanted nothing to do with more snow. But… I kept saying to watch for the end of this week. Earlier this week we started sounding the horns more and more on the snow threat. Then I started making maps for you guys giving you a heads up on who had the best shot at seeing accumulating snows before finally sticking totals on here earlier today. Again… I am VERY pleased with the overall forecast and I feel this is a high note to end the winter on.
A few weeks ago… I blew a snow forecast due to sleet. I took my medicine like a man admitted I busted and gave kudos to the NWS in Jackson for seeing the sleet factor when I did not.
I cannot come even close to giving out kudos this go around as they were playing catch up from the get go with this storm. We did not get any kind of advisory until almost 4pm today after snow was already on the ground in the south. As it turns out… a Winter Storm Warning was needed.
Look… I didn’t want the headaches of forecasting this snow either. I said it over and over here on the blog. But… we have a service to provide to the public regardless of what we “want” the weather to actually be like. I give you this blog for free… you pay taxes for them to forecast for you and only you can hold them accountable.
Ok… I will put the soapbox away for a while now. Hey… I have been much better with the soapbox of late!! ![]()
Let’s give you a quick breakdown of the weather ahead of us with the headlines…
1. Morning snows will end across the south and skies will become partly cloudy out there today. Highs will reach the 40s but areas with snow on the ground will be a few degrees colder. Enjoy what snow you have… it will be gone quickly. ![]()
2. Saturday looks UGLY! Showers will be likely to go along with chilly temps in the 40s. Booooo!
3. Sunday will see improving weather as morning showers head east and temps head into the 50s.
4. Early next week can get pretty darn warm around here with temps likely to hit the 60s… at least. ![]()
5. A strong cold front will race toward us by Thursday of next week with a return to chilly air possible for the end of the week into next weekend.
You can keep helping us out by posting your snow totals from this latest WINTER STORM.
I will have an update coming later today or tonight with updates through the weekend as well. Since this MAY be our last decent snowfall until next winter… some of you bloggers may not check in as much. Just want you to know I appreciate you guys as much as the regulars.
Plus… you guys will want to check back as the blog has some BIG plans for later this year!!!!
Have a great Friday and GO BIG BLUE!!!!!!

Thanks Chris you are the best. You are right.I became very concerned tonight as we drove back from Logan WV home to Pikeville my husband had no idea, he could not believe how bad the roads got and fast.I said I told you Chris said it was coming but he had no access like alot of people to the internet AS HE WAS WORKING the road all day he said the radio didn’t mention it.We got in a bad situation and fast.White out conditions at times. We were lucky we made it home safely.I was scared.Even at Pike CENTRAL High school the roads were completely covered and slick and we slid. You know come to think of it and i don’t know why, but we never saw not one snow plow or salt truck not one from Logan WV to Pikeville Ky.That is very unusual they are usually great but maybe they were not warned.Snow is still coming down in Pikeville about 4 inches and temp is currently 34 and thanks for posting my pic you are the best!!!!!! Stay safe everyone!!!
When i woke up yesterday morning NWS called for a dusting with inch or two possible on the highest ridges.. We have close to 5 inches here in Perry County! And we don’t even live on a ridge!
Couldn’t help but laugh at them while they “upped” the totals with each update.
I’m in Wayne Co. WV right now with not more than a dusting. However, the wife says we have at least 3 plus in northern Lawrence Co. and it’s still coming down.
GO CATS. ESPN says we get two wins we go dancing. Here’s to beating the TIGERS today and getting our ticket stamped at least we hope.
Well this storm blowed didn’t accomplish anything at my house past 6pm temp stayed around 34 the entire time 🙁
hard to believe andy on tht knox/clay line there 5 inches, you sir are not livin right is all i can say. got a buddy in corbin with 4 inches, u must live in a horrible place to not got any snow this time rose.
got 6.7 inches at my places. it wonderful been out all nite having some old school fun.
Rolo and others, glad you all finally got your snow. Took all winter, but you finally got it. We have 2 in. here in SE Lexington. Ready for spring now.
got almost 2 inches Rolo and that all fell before 6:30 news was overafter that it all was sleet or just plain rain stayed aroudn 34 the whole time
:(…ANDY IS RIGHT…we got 2″ yesterday then around 6 or 7 it turned to rain,RAIN!!!!….and this morning we’re lucky if we got a good 1″ of slush….SO,SO DISAPPOINTING!!!!
I am so ready to KISS THIS MESS GOOD BYE!!!…HASTA LA VISTA BABY!!!!..I’m ready for spring…
I mean GOOD GRIEF..rolo has almost 7″ in clay co…I’m only 12 miles from Corbin and they had snow during the whole event with about 5″…AND I GET FLIPPIN RAIN!!!!!
BRING ON THE 60’s, WITH NO TURNING BACK!!
James and Rolo, you all can have all my snow lol. Not that we got much, maybe 1/2″ here a few miles south and west of Mt Sterling (Clark/Mont line. Cold enough to stick though.
Saturday sounds dreadful, I still have bunches of baby lambs due anyday and while they don’t mind cold- wet will kill. Ugh. Please, girls, keep your legs crossed til Sunday!

This snow flip flopped from usual, we have nothing here in Georgetown. That’s fine here, there are enough snow days to make up already.

Mousie, Knott County.
Snow e6.0 inch, reported by trained spotter.
you all made The Weather Channel this morning…SNOW HOGS…lol..
ok since we didn’t get any snow here or not enough to amount to anything i’m ready for Spring 11 winter flops and counting although we did double our snow total from last yr
Crystal, how long (in normal weather) does it take you guys to get from Logan to Pikeville? My brother-in-law is thinking of taking a job in Pikeville, moving in with his mom in Logan and driving everyday. I’m thinking he’ll end up on my couch most of the time! How far is it? I was thinking about an hour and a half??
it is about 30 minutes from pikeville to williamson, wv (give or take). then about 35 minutes from williamson to logan.
i’m from pike co. not knott county
no doubt the snow dome truly lies over mine and Tim’s house sorry you got your hopes up yesterday Tim
VERY fine cut-off line to this snow. In Lawrenceburg, my vehicle was covered this morning. 10 miles north in Frankfort, nothing. Somebody actually asked me, “Is that snow on your truck??”
why is pikeville independent only on a
1 hour delay?
Thank you so much for all that you do for us!!!
Tim and Andy are right, Knox Co. winters stink. We have areas just to our north and west getting hammered with snow and we have only rain/sleet after 6 pm. To make matters worse the radar was showing snow the entire time. We are the true snowdome of KY. Bring on Spring.
1.7 inches in versailles. let’s bring on spring!

the ole waa or whatever it called.
1-2 up north of 64 if it cranks up HEAVY and it would have to be HEAVY SNOWE to put anything down.
this is a real nice set up with front stalling out and low riding up, but just not ewnough cold air folks.
The long term for March looks BLAH. 50s and some rainy weather. No severe wx in sight. No snow in sight. Just blah weather for much of the month. Ick.
Thanks for everything you do Chris. You were about the only one calling for 4 inches plus out of this storm and you nailed it. I ended up with around 6 inches in Prestonsburg. By far the biggest snow of the year. I guess that puts my yearly total to about 9 inches lol. What a winter it has been. Hopefully next Winter will feature the mother load.
6 inches of wet snow here in Staffordsville, Johnson County.
Chris, I live on RT 825 in Johnson county, I measured on my back deck in several spots I have 6 and quarter inches of snow. If I’m not mistaken thats the biggest snow we have had at my house in 9 years or tied we might have got around 6 inches in 20001.
Got about 3″ at my house in Wilmore.

Snow m3.0 inch, reported by trained spotter.
A trained spotter reported 3 inches of snow on the
ground.
Nothing here in Cynthiana, but that’s a good thing! I’m ready for 85 & sunshine.
AMEN!! AMEN!!..
WOOHOO!! I am so excited!! I have almost 4 inches of snow at my house in Pulaski Co. I moved here from the mountains of Eastern Ky and I must say it’s been a snow-less existence all winter. Better late than never–and now I’m ready for spring!
Im with you Mitch!
around 2 inches in Campbellsville, temps rising snow melting if we aren’t gonna get a foot then bring back the 70’s
Harrison Co, Georgetown and Frankfort didn’t get a single flake. The first snow I saw this morning was on cars coming from the south. How bizarre to get missed for a change, but for the sake of my tulips, I’ll pass.
Go CATS!!!! Play like you believe, and we’ll believe in you too!
I have six inches of snow at the Johnson/Floyd line near Bonanza, KY. That’s Rt 1750. I see a neighbor on Rt 825 got 6 and a quarter! I’ve been out playing in the snow and taking pictures. The temp is 31.
Tim, Andy Rose, I wish you would have gotten the snow, too. The radar showed it all over the place.
Is anyone else experiencing problems getting your post to show up? Usually after I hit back to main page and then go to comments again, my post is showing. Now, I have to refresh it 3 times after doing that before it shows up. CB, am I doing something wrong?
Wooo! We’ve picked up six inches of snow in Auxier. I’ve got pics!
we had snow and heavy snow till 6 then nothing but rain and sleet
there is always next yr
4″ was the final measurement early this morning here in East Bernstadt. We could have picked up more but sleet kept mixing back in. I feel bad for my little guy, who won’t get to go on his field trip today, but this snow is just so beautiful.
Now, BRING ON SPRING!!!!! 😉
A bit more than 2 inches here in SW Lexington. Go figure, I’m on spring break from nku and we get snow here!
Got a bit over 2″ here and it came down in about a 3 hour time period. Very pretty out this morning, but I hope this is the last of the snow!
lunardi says cats will dance to the NIT unless they win the SEC tourney. still a long way to go.
that describes our weekend nasty black and very wet snow on the ground with gray clouds drizzle and cold. BLAH.
3″ on the ridges here in Menifee.
as for chris hiting this one dead on and the nws missing it by miles. I don’t see it that way chris waited untill the day of the storm while the nws at least gave some indication of total estimate the day before. neither forecast got the band coming up from e-town to southern areas of the lex metro prodcing 1.5-2.5 inch totals. Chris’s forecast did hit the 4+ chance region very well and the NWS did not issue warnings like they should have. Overall a good forecast for most areas by both groups with the excpetions being the southern portions of the lex metro and the areas that picked up the hvy bursts around hazard and jackson. at least this time the nws issued adv’s when they figured out there orginal forecast for 1/2 inch was going to bust unlike last time missing the ice accums with ice still falling at the mid eve shift and not issuing one when the defintion of an adv clearly indicates any ice accums warrants one.
as for myself clearly overestimating the warm ground over the snowfall rates hurt me and i expected more sleet. I also missed the band from e-town to the southern areas of the lexington metro.
If you call 0-little accumulation getting it right even after there was 2 inches on the ground i suppose the NWS did a good job what hurt everybody’s forecast for my area is the temps warming up to 34 and it rained or just sleet from 6 pm and is still raining
Morning all. We finally got enough snow to cover the grass! Chris, I measured 3.9 inches at the house. It is absolutely beautiful! Got a few pics, and will upload them to you later this afternoon.
This one is a heavy, wet snow. And the trees are covered! YOu were right, Chris. It does indeed llook like a post card! Our current temp is 32, no wait. It just went up to 33. Still cloudy, but beautiful, all the same.
Tim, and Andy…I am surprised to hear that you guys wound up with rain, and freezing rain. We had a lot of sleet, and then it mixed with snow, and changed to all snow. And I konw Monticello has freezing rain. But at my house, we never got the first drop of that, that we saw. OF course, we had about a half inch of sleet under all the snow. And wouldn’t you know it…the biggest snow we have had for a long time, and it is at the end of winter. Doesn’t matter, we wil take it!
Now, lets see what we can do about getting spring in here!
if you look at the snow totals you will notice lexington has the offical .6 and the other measurement of 1.5. this happend with the last event as well and happens far to often and has been a problem for a long time. the offical measurement is at the bluegrass airport. do you see any problems?? 1. extra warmth coming off the runways2. most surfaces are sheltered by objects or versailles and man o’war rd’s. 3. the sun hits this location harder than most.
the main issue i have with it is i drive by the airport every morning and there was at least an inch of snow on the ground confirming the other report. the nws should look into this matter but they won’t becasue they don;t care that much about records and climate info.
as i said that was one of the missed aspects of the storm i doidn’t give the nws overhwlming praise either. for where you are i would call it a miss.

my spelling is awful today!
Hey guys, cats are pulling out the black Uni’s for the game today, Black Cats on Friday the 13th, I like it, Lets kick some Tiger Butt.
Congrats to everyone who got snow. My friends and family down home in London are overjoyed…Us on the other hand…never saw the first flake in Sadieville. I am not complaining…I am so ready for softball and sunshine. My daughter was born in the ’93 snow storm so she thinks the snow down home is all for her birthday…
Here in my part of Prestonsburg I measured 7 inches in several areas of my yard.
I also expected more sleet based on model thermal profiles. Oh well. Was surprised at the snow..but warm ground DID prevent accum. here along the BG parkway. NWS was horribly behind with the Advisory this time. It’s true. The system went way farther north than models showed.
People wear black to funerals also.
Was it a dream? Went to bed at 3am with near 3″ of snow. Woke up and its already gone and now the temp is 50* Not complaining though.
This kind of snow where it accumulates on top of grassy areas can be very misleading when it comes to measurements. It will often look like a whole lot more than is actually there simply because it doesn’t fall thru to the ground surface. Also if your not in a very open area accurate measurements can not be made.
A few over 4″ totals do not make a winter storm. If the region average is 4 or more it would. I think the NWS posting Advisories was the best choice. After all advisories suggest that travel impacts will be minor and short lived of which was the case. Winter Storm Warnings suggest major impact that will last an extended period, which definitely was not the case. Perhaps the old “Snow Advisory” should be brought back. ………..Anyways, I thought all contributions made to the “outlooking” of this short lived event by all posters here were insightful.
hopefully spring’s not that far away…12z run of the gfs shows one more minor cold shot next weekend then 70’s bound!!!!…here we come…OR AT LEAST I HOPE SO ANYWAY…
just barely any snow or slush left in my area now, its all but a faded memory…and a bad memory it has been…or at least down here it has been.. It is kind of Ironic for the most of you that did get a good snow, this is the anniverary of the March 13th SUPERSTORM OF 93’…
………………
the latest run of the Gfs is showing heavy rain here tomorrow…is it gonna be a snow to heavy rain to FLOODING EVENT??…sheww I hope not…
here ya go Tim since you said the word

Mitch Chris didnt wait till the day of the storm here is a quote from weds.blog
What is happening with the weather today could easily be telling us something about what is going to happen later Thursday into early Friday. Colder temps and more moisture may be in the works here leading to a greater snow and ice threat across Kentucky. The models are still showing this and the NAM is now in the 6″ range for some folks.
The HPC is picking up on the heavy snow threat as well…
I don’t understand what you are saying
Mitch Chis posted this on weds blog he did not wait till the day of the storm.I dont understand what you are saying

Hi about an hour.Thats with my hubby driving lol, no its an hour, because once you cross into Wv its 65 miles an hour.
he said the nam was showing that. chris didn’t issue total projections untill the storm was closing in.

lexington had 2 snow totals one of .6 offical at the airport and the other of 1.5 inches. when i drove by the airport there was over an inch of snow on the ground this morning there. this isn’t the first time either since i moved here 10 years ago quite a few of the offical snow mesurements at lexington have been off.
Does anybody else notice temps around here havent moved much from freezing with the moisture getting closer? still 35 here.
Really not much of a winter because it cometh and goeth. And yes the warm temps will be back. By the way, I really didn’t see anyone make a call on the snowfall being 2-4 inches locally more until the system was just about on top of us. I believe Chris didn’t put his snowfall map out until early afternoon yesterday. Maybe that was because Chris thought the sleet could factor in again. 🙂 I’m sure some people in Clay and Knox would agree that sleet did have a factor. Chris do you still believe that the last part of march has winter potential or was yesterday just a sniplet? We will probably get to April and see more snow making it how many months in a row that it has snowed? Oh well, I’m ready for spring to come and stay.
True! As Chris always says, here are the models just for fun. Unless he puts a map up, the models aren’t his prediction. But hey Chris, keeping putting those models up because I always enjoy looking at them even if they don’t pan out.
Its stayed 37 all day today which means prob more of the same thing for me which was cold rain
2 1/2 inches of snow at my house this morning in Richmond
Hello!:)
Well, wasn’t that little “snowstorm” somewhat of a “BUST”..?! DOH! Here in Nelson Co/Bardstown City,I managed to venture out onto the deck (now 5 wks, 1 day into broken collarbone due to Ice Storm..OW!-still hurts!)and take an accurate measurement after digging for the tape measure..a wee bit over 3″ for us here as of around midnight last night. Get up this AM..I’m like, “Where’d the Hell did it GO??!”- and trying to convince my other half we REALLY DID have that much…lol! By the time 10am rolled around, the sun was out, it was halfway WARM, and you couldn’t tell we’d had precip of ANY KIND…I was soooo convinced last evening when I commented to Mitch that you guys had a GOOD ONE heading your way, but..oops..!- Right after I said that and got offline, everything started to fizzle out…I SO wanted all of you to FINALLY get some much wanted snow out of this one…who knows? Perhaps there might just be another one before Spring??! 😉
BTW…NICE PIX!:) I always like looking @ ’em! Keep ’em coming w/ ANY weather event!
Good evening everyone. I tried to post earlier, but I went to moderation heaven. So, I am trying again.
We wound up with 4 inches of snow at my house from yesterdays storm. It was a wet, heavy snow, hanging on the trees, and power lines, and just absolutely beautiful!
And guess what…..we FINALLY got enough snow to cover the grass!! I have the pictures to prove it! 😉
Tim, I saw where you had snow that thirned to rain and freezing rain. I talked to a guy from MOnticello this morning, and he said that they had gotten a pretty good dose of freezing rain, too. We got a lot of sleet (about half an inch) and then the snow, but I never did see the frist drop of rain, freezing or otherwise, until late this afternoon. A drizzly type of rain though, so we still have quite a bit of the snow left at this point. I expect that will change with the rain that is coming.
Well, Basketball is on, so, you know….
Waiting for the next update, Chris!
Moderation heaven, so third try. Short and sweet. Four inches of snow at my house. NO freezing rain, but half inch of sleet underneath. Drizzly rain now, temp still at 35. Waiting for next update, Chris. Thanks!
Crystal, we got into the same situation in Laurel County. We were in the southern end of the county and within two hours travel was very dangerous. We never saw a snowplow or salt truck either. We did dounuts in the road a couple of times and I even wanted to spend the night in London, but my husband said no. Anyway, I love the snow, but traveling in it last night was awful. I am sure that I now have more gray hair than I did earlier in the day.
I know Pat the motel went thru my mind too.Glad you all are safe.
thanks chris for posting my pic. just had to play in the snow 1 last time before spring.. we got around 4′ inches of snow here in lincoln co..
I live and work near the airport and we certainly didn’t have a full inch. It probably just looked like more as you drove by sitting up on the grass.
I was on the southside of town and it was snowing hard with a half inch of snow on the ground, drove home to near the airport, and had nothing. That early first snowfall we had last year, more was recorded at the airport than much of the rest of Lexington.
With sharp cutoffs, it’s not unusual to have a wide disparity of measurements in a single town.
