******NOON UPDATE******

Good afternoon everyone. The cold out there this today is colder and quicker than forecast while the precip is hanging around a little longer. Sleet or some wet snowflakes are likely to mix in with the light rain… especially in central and northern Kentucky. Temps have dropped into the 30s behind this front and we won’t see much of a rise in thermometers this afternoon.

What is happening with the weather today could easily be telling us something about what is going to happen later Thursday into early Friday. Colder temps and more moisture may be in the works here leading to a greater snow and ice threat across Kentucky. The models are still showing this and the NAM is now in the 6″ range for some folks.

The HPC is picking up on the heavy snow threat as well…

As I mentioned earlier… this does not make for a happy weather dude. But… it is what it is and it’s something we will be tracking and watching very closely!

I will have another update for you later this afternoon or early this evening so make sure you check back.

Take care.

PREVIOUS DISCUSSION

Good Wednesday folks! The headline of this blog post says it all as the potential for snow is back with us within the next couple of days. This does not sit well with your friendly weather dude as I don’t want the headaches that come with trying to forecast March snow and I want SPRING!

Before we get to all that… we have a cold front crossing the state early today with a line of showers and thundershowers. No severe weather with this so all if well on that end. Here is the radar…

Temps have been incredible over the past several days. Record highs were recorded in several areas on Tuesday and highs today were recorded just after midnight. Much colder air is moving in with temps falling through the 40s during the afternoon. You can track the temp drop here…

Currents

Winds will be very gusty as well as we break out into some sunshine across the north. Clouds will stick around across the south for much of the day as out front hangs up just to our south.

I have been warning you about this being a false start to spring for a few weeks now and that winter was likely waiting in the wings for the middle of March. This stalled out front has a nice bit of cold air behind it and the models are just now catching up to it and the numbers are coming in colder with each run. A wave of low pressure should develop along the front and ride northeast bringing moisture northward into the region late Thursday into early Friday. Amazingly enough… whatever falls is likely to be in the form of… GULP… snow.

The NAM and GFS look a lot alike…

NAM Thursday Evening

NAM Thursday Night

GFS Thursday Evening

GFS Thursday Night

Haven’t we seen this moving before? Didn’t something like this happen a few weeks ago. Hmmm… how did that one work out?  Well… just for laughs and giggles… here is what the models are showing in terms of snowfall…

NAM Snowfall

That is a large swath of 3″-6″ of wet snow along and south of Interstate 64.

GFS Snowfall

That is a little lighter and shows 2″-4″ of snow a little farther south.

Could this finally bring the snow lovers in the south a taste of what they have been missing out on this winter? Well… I wouldn’t bet the farm on it right now. We will track it anyway because that is what the blog does. But… I am protesting tracking this one because I don’t want to have to deal with it and I am soooooo ready for spring!!!

I will update the snow chances… blah blah blah… later today. Take care.
