Good afternoon everyone! A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH is now in effect for most of central and eastern Kentucky until 11pm. A line of strong and severe thunderstorms is racing eastward across the state and will likely bring damaging winds and large hail to some areas.
Here is a look at the watch…
You will notice the blue line… that is the actual watch box from the Storm Prediction Center. The filled counties are the ones the NWS offices have included in the watch. You may also notice Jackson decided to leave a number of counties out of the recommended watch from the SPC. While leaving a few counties out is usually the case in these situations… I don’t think I have ever seen such a strange decision in this kind of situation.
Here is a map showing where the current warnings are…
I have set aside a host of radars for you to track the storms…
I will be leaving updates in the comments section so please check back. Help us out by sharing how the weather is looking where you live. Take care.

Thanks Chris…keep us posted.
TORNADO WARNING FOR BOONE, KENTON AND CAMPBELL COUNTIES IN NORTHERN KY UNTIL 730PM.
Looks like the severe weather threat has to be diminishing if they’ve moved it from a tornado watch to a severe thunderstorm watch, which is good news, obviously.
There could still be up to 6 or 7 high wind reports out of the watch box area though. Still keeping my eye on a storm just to my west which looks like it will hit Danville proper pretty soon.
That was a storm that was at least once tornadic based on radar back out to the west. Will keep an eye on it.
And, one other point of note: it looks like the radar is showing other smaller storms that are popping behind the main line and then merging into it—I suppose it’s a fast-moving system that has a bit of trailing energy behind the main front, so a couple of other storms (which could possibly reach severe threshholds) could spawn after the main line goes through. A big timing thing there, and those storms would be tough to nail down.
The clouds, from my west-facing window, look like they are absoutely full of rain. Looks like we might have a pretty heavy bout with it before the storm is done in my area.
A bit of pink lightning, too. Nice to see with the sunset partially visible.
severe thunderstorm warning for taylor green adair and metcalfe counties

just had hvy rain in versailles and lexington little wind or lightning.
Still only sprinkles here in downtown Winchester, but the wind is wicked. Kind of an eerie glow to the sky.
It isn’t doing anything yet at East Point in Johnson County, but the sky looks dark and the wind is picking up a bit.
The storm we just had was a good old fashioned “nice drink of water.” I’d say just in the past 20 minutes we’ve gotten around a quarter of an inch of rain. Nice. 😉
Sporadic lightning, but nothing like a severe storm or supercell type lightning–just a bit here and there, and some heavy rain..
Winds only maxed probably around 24 or 25 mph. Not too bad, really. Nice bit of rain.
It’s raining in eastern Bourbon County. No wind, no lightning, just rain. I can handle this anytime!!
🙂
Thanks for the update Chris
1 year ago today we had 4″ of snowfall…
Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Estill, Lee, Powell, Wolfe untill 8:45 PM EDT.
Lee and Wolfe were not included in the watch!
Storm in eastern Estill county heading east northeast may produce brief lightning and heavy rains, winds up to 25 MPH (hhahahh) and an extremely slight chance for hail, but it’s not likely.
Good ole’ gullywasher style. 😉
FIRE IN THE HOLEEEEEEE!!!!
well me and the GOAT are hunk er d down and ready for anything.
bring it on, it getting still out there, that a good sign of stroing storms close. i love when it gets real calm right before a GOOD STORM,
All is calm here in East Bernstadt for the moment. Though by looks of radar, it won’t last much longer. The storms headed this way don’t look as strong as they did earlier this evening, so hopefully they are losing some steam.
I gotta give props to my Heels for another victory over Duke! 79-71. 😀 😀 😀
Some of you might be wondering why a watch was issued for our area—-two words—insurance policy.
It was a possibiltity, even if it was remote. We were lucky to escape from these storms with minor damage. Places to our west, I fear, weren’t so lucky.
did the blog’s time stamp spring forward too? I’m curious. My time is 9:11.
Nate,
Unless the blog is running on central time, I don’t see the change myself.
Must not be much happening since there’s no live blogging. Looks intense in part based on the radar
Heavy rain and high wind with vivid lightning in Paintsville but no warning of any type for Johnson County.
no rain in my area yet, but its not far away, windy and 70*…amazing for 9:45pm. on Mar.8th…
My feelings exactly. What’s up??????
Well, we missed out on one, but there is another one heading this way. It is lightning a lot, and I am hearing thunder now. The winds are picking up, too. Still very warm outside, even at this hour..(9:52pm)
I am seeing very low clouds when the lightning flashes. Looks like a heavy downpour is headed our way. Will update as it gets here. Getting closer now as the thunder is getting louder.
Watch is still in effect here, but I am not sure this will be severe. Lots of red on the radar from it, though.
Who is we i never had 4 inches the entire yr 🙁
Raining here at East Point, heard one big clap of thunder and nothing else so far. We aren’t under a lot of stuff on the radar yet.
67 in Pikeville with rain just starting, light in nature right now.
Raining here in Letcher Co.
Just a thought…maybe some people don’t have the “E” word. ELECTRICITY! Night all. Stay safe as to what may come your way. NIGHT!!!!
Storms tonight seemed weak conpared to what nws and most here thought it to be…..we had a severe thunderstorm warning and the wind blew harder this afternoon when the sun was poking out than during the storm…..just a little lightning and thunder but better safe than sorry I Guess….I dont care for the severe stuff anyways….lol
pretty good storm coming thru here right now. Lots of wind
Some hard rains just moved through my area of Manchester. Some thunder and lightning as well.
Here in Danville I was on my way to dinner when the main line moved thru. Intensly heavy rain, little wind and a few strokes of lightning. Intensity was not even close to severe. Total rain measured was .87″. Now thats doing some raining.

NE BOYLE COUNTY: 60* and .87″ of rain on Sunday.

Michael?
I’m sure you remember that night back in 96, or maybe it was 97 or 98. The night parts of Garrard, Boyle and Lincoln counties received up to 9″ of rain in about 3 hours? Now THAT was a flash flood if I’ve ever seen one! Pretty amazing stuff that night..
The boyle/garrard county bridge was washed out that night. Rough stuff…
That was the same night it thundered and frequent lightning strikes were all around, and our basement got up to 3″ of water standing in it, and that was with a fully cleaned drainage pipe right in front of it. That, and there were actual underground sewer lines that were bursting some 2 to 2 and a half foot out of the ground from overrrunning water. That was quite the fun and exctiting event. One of the few times in my life I’ve ever “frolicked” around. (giggle.) Dangerous, but really, really fun.
And of course to prevent another one of those dangerous situations of kids playing in water… when floods happen, absolutlely DO NOT stand in the path of a sewer drainage block. Those things have more suction power than you would ever know. If you’re not strong enough and they don’t have grates on them to keep your body from passing through them, down you will go.
Is the same storm that put Falmouth under water? Our basement was full of water, as in five feet of water! We lived on the side of a hill and the water ran down it and right into our basement. We made major improvements after that storm. We have sinced moved and now live on TOP of a hill. No more flooding for me. Live and learn. 🙂
That ’97 flood was wild. I had to keep going outside to check on things and our dog bit my toes every time I walked toward the door. He was worried because I was so anxious and concerned. The lightning chased me back in the house quite often. It was intense. We had almost ten inches of rain in a few hours.
