Good Thursday evening folks. I wanted to drop by for yet another update for you as wicked period of winter weather rolls on. Before we get to a quick update on the winter storm threat for next week… let’s talk about the light snow that will break out later this evening and continue into Friday.

Radar is beginning to pick up on some snow bands developing to our northwest. These will sink toward the southeast as they increase….

This continues to look like a system that can put down an inch or two of snow through Friday. This will be enough to cause slick travel and will put even more strain on our trees and power lines that remain caked in ice.

Temps tonight will be in the low 20s and will recover into the mid 20s early Friday before dropping into the teens by early evening. Some single digit lows will be possible by Saturday morning.

The weekend will see a quick surge of normal air moving in. The nose of this milder air can produce another batch of snow showers later Saturday. Winds will kick up as well with temps hitting the 40s Sunday. Areas with an extensive snow and ice pack will see their temps struggle to get to 40. Sunday is our only hope to melt some of the ice before our next storm moves in by Monday.

WINTER STORM THREAT continues for Monday- Wednesday of next week and an upgrade to ALERT status may come as early As Friday as confidence increases that a MAJOR snowstorm is poised to slam the state.

Here is a dose of some of the newer model maps…

European Model Monday Morning

GFS Monday Afternoon

Monday Evening

The GFS continues to suffer from convective feedback issues along the Gulf which hurts the models initial placement and strength of the low and this in turn cuts down on precip totals. The GFS is still spitting out close to 1″ of liquid precip. Some of the other models are showing closer to 2″ of precip. If 1 inch of rain usually equals 10 inches of snow… well… you do the math. That does not mean they are right though with the precip totals!

This will be a deepening storm that will also bring a lot of wind with it and before all is said and done… it can easily turn into a blizzard. Will it do that when it is on top of us? Way to early to tell at this point.

It has been amazing to watch EVERY model show this storm in similar fashion. This, combined with the overall pattern favoring something like this, is why my confidence level is very high right now. But… I would expect the models to waffle a bit here over the next day or so. It is almost impossible to have a model run or two not get a little kooky on us.

By the way… GREAT extended forecast discussions from the NWS folks today. Our buddy MJ in Louisville and Mr. Greif down in Jackson broke it all down in their usual fine fashion! Kudos guys. Maybe we can get them to drop us some thoughts here on the blog?

I will have another update coming your way later tonight so be sure to check back.

Take care.
