Good morning once again everyone and thanks for all the hard work you guys have put into blogging with us to keep everyone up to date on this winter storm.
I will have a full update coming up for you a little after noon. Here are a few quick thoughts…
1. The cold air is going to be tough to move out today. The 32 degree line is going have a tough time getting north of I-64 through this event. That is especially true near Lexington.
2. Major ice storm unfolding across parts of the state. This will only get worse in the north later this afternoon and tonight.
3. The south will continue to deal with ice through this morning before temps warm enough for rain. Watch the streams.
4. Switch to heavy snow still likely late tonight through Wednesday for everyone.
Please keep posting your weather for the world to see and I will be back with another update a little later.

Thanks Chris…I’d hate to be iced in at work tonight!
Thanks Chris…all rain here in Letcher County.
Radar says I should be getting hammered, but nothing falling from the sky. temp at 24* on the Rowan/Carter line.
Our power went out briefly early this morning, here in Marion Co. Since, it continues to flicker every now and then. Lots of ice as more freezing rain continues to fall. I’m sure power will be out again soon π
going for a walk in the sleet/ice/rain with my winter coat and my umbrella. glad I live in a holler with no neighbors! 29*@ 10:23AM in Craney Creek.
Good luck Mark, hopefully it will stay on.
Thanx CB..!!
Vinny = stayed up too late waiting for snow… (vinny very disappointed)
Vinny = not gonna stay up all night to night…! lol
Well crap, it was snowing pretty good went i went to bed, and now this crap… I’m hoping the model are correct and we all get hammered tonight (everyone but Rolo, Hope he gets all COLD rain) ;)…
Any reports of “crippling” going on ? I haven’t heard of any power problems, but then again, I’ve been doing dishes and laundry this morning and haven’t really checked… lol
NW LEX
25ΒΊ and a nasty, ugly, depressing, want to go back to bed, FRZ RAIN…!
…
Rolo 32 in Pikeville and guess whats falling COLD RAIN as a wise man once said Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Vinny, same here. Still freezing rain. I sure hope this stops soon.
NAM and GFS are in lock-step with this system now. A switch to moderate/heavy snow does indeed look to be coming! That will be great. The impact of this ice is too damaging. We have to get through today…then we are good…
Yes there has been several counties just south of louisville w/o power, looking really really bad for icing and snow late tonight into tomorrow….
i think alot of the area will see atleast 4” by midday tommorow possibly a good bit more in some areas
my call of maybe an inch of snow overnight in lex was right on the money, btw almost 1/2 of ice here, just shoveled the drive that sleet/ice together was about an inch but weighed ALOT
I just went out to measure the snow and we have 3 inches with the ice on top here in Morehead (I actually live in the northern part of the county). We’ve been seeing a light freezing rain or sleet going on here for the past few hours. Even when the map is showing snow, we are getting the ice. Looks like it will get worse before it gets better.
A layer of ice on the trees and power lines here in Johnson County. The power has gone off a couple of times briefly, but it continues to flicker frequently. The cable is also going in and out.
Freezing rain and 30* near Belfry, Ky in Pike Co. Stay safe especially on those secondary roads (heard the 4 lane was icy as well).
Is that 4″ added on to what we got last night and today? If so that would put me right around the 8-10 inch mark in Carter County, we have 5.6 last check…
Here in scott county, we got over 2 inches of snow last night. Seems to be almost 3 to 4.
Already over half an inch of ice and the power has gone out twice.
I am not buying the snow. Just like how this part was more ice more north than many expected, I think the rest will follow suit in either ice, sleet or cold rain.
How would it be snow and perform differently than now. I do not see it and did not for this part either.
Someone please enlighten me on how the rest of the system will behave differently and please be n-ice π
11:00 or so here and Mesonet reports Lex at 27 degrees, hopefully we can make it to 33 or so. If not… Blah I am assuming enough ice to cause some power outages are possible
Bubba, when the Low moves East (which it will), the cold air will start to be drawn into the State and the flow of the upper levels will sheft to NNW. That is when the snow will commence.
i have 2 in of snow tenth of an inch of ice roads are horrible looks like ice today will take out power which means no school rest of week hope i get to see the super bowl
28 here in the city of Winchester, light drizzle freezing on. The kids are undeterred and heading for College Park with Death Discs.
It looks as if we got about 2″ of snow before the sleet/FR began, and now it’s all mushed down under a nice coating of ice.
I sincerely wish for you all to KEEP POWER where you are, as I hope ours stays on. I agree with Wxman, we have to get through today, then we will be OK for the snow. Let ‘er rip!
im going to get bvid on youtube people ill post it soon just gotta make vid
I live on scott co/fayette co. Border. We aren’t getting any precip. When is the next wave to start?
I just drove from London, KY to Georgetown, KY for work and have a few observations-drive time was 2 hours:
-Kudos to the road crews, I75 is crystal clear from just below Lexington to London. From just before the 104 through Gtown is still slushy and dangerous if not paying attention.
London was all rain and 33 on my temp gauge.
Mt Vernon and Berea have massive ice with the temp around 30. Richmond has lesser ice with a temp of 29.
Snow still a problem in the Lexington area, temp dropped to 26.
About 3-4 inches of snow here in Gtown, temp of 25.
When will someone give in and say- okay, it was a snow event for the north and an ice event for the rest of us? π
That being said, the north should get some ice action today….
I sure hope CB is correct about the snow map. If it is, we are due some good snow by tomorrow, since all ice to this point.
Seriously, I appreciate CB’s effort and he did mention the ice potential. My point is more frustration for yet another gulf fed system in eleven years turning into everything BUT snow for people not in north snow-snob KY π
Gotta laugh though, because it just weather and has no feelings (sure like hurting ours though π )

gfs says looks out tonight, nam does not match up to its run which called for 3-6”, safe call for many gfs is overdoing the 8-10 inch amounts of alot of the area i’d cut those in half
Snow snob! π
This event surprised me 0%, but it is uncanny how KY is the fence for north AND south fed systems.
North KY gets it every time and our main events are everything but ice- unless yo count a few over-perorming clippers that even then- the north got a lot more.
Gottsta laugh π
Hows the ice outlook Tommy?
Tommy, do you see a lot of snow tommorow for Pikeville area, this rain is just depressing!
New NAM run has 2 inches of precip for most of the state through mid day Wednesday. Uh Oh.
Just made a run to the post office on Lansdowne Drive in Lex. Yes, the main roads in Lex are passable, but the side roads are terrible. Where you approach intersections like at Lansdowne and Malibu, the roads are solid, thick ice. People are ignoring stop lights and stop signs to keep from having to stop. Even in my all wheel drive SUV, I slid all the way down the hill on Malibu as it meets Tates Creek. Honestly, its as bad as I have seen it in Lex in years.
First CB rocks π but our non-north KY winter weather does not π
Meant “everything but SNOW” in my last post. Ice is now in my brain with all thougts. Bleh
I sure wish that snow map had panned out. This ice is mega lame.
I notice not many posts. Me thinks people are losing their power at an acclerated rate now. Ours has gone out twice and the fun has just started π π
Good news will be no more posts from BubbaG. Still I do have a cell phone with two large batteries ;). I use it to post on the blog too.

current condtions in versailles as of 10:00 am.
2-4 inches tommorow after hvy rain
Cool video Mitch thanks.
still some possibilites out there nam and gfs do bring the 32 line breifly to 1-71 giving the lex metro and surrounding areas a 4 hour window of 33-35 temps while the sref only lifts it to jkl. could make the difference between 2003 and a big chance for crews to do there thing.
2-4 inch snow regionwide tommorow maybe a 5 or 6 total.
Just returned to the world of power. It has been off for about an hour and a half. Currently have freezing rain still occuring here in Jeffersonville. I just hope we don’t loose power again.
Hey pike, hows it looking over your way? Still got power? What do you think about school tomorrow?
I am so glad that us here in Whitley Co. did not see the Ice but it looks like just rain for us the rest of the week. The low tonight is only 38 says TWC! That makes me sad!!
if the 32 does make it to i71 then lexington is getting @#%$ed in the butt again when it comes to winter weather, o well and my 3-6 will proabably give us 1.5” of snow, shiz ye’all i wanna move to da rockies where 20” snow is just another morning
I am so glad that us here in Whitley Co. did not see the Ice but it looks like just rain for us the rest of the week. The low tonight is only 38 says TWC! That makes me sad!!
We have about six inches of light fluffy snow in eastern Harrison Co. now. Two inches arrived yesterday, and the rest overnight. There’s a thin coating of ice on some of the windows (north side of house, for some reason), but no rain to speak of.
The horses have a thin coating of ice on their manes and blankets. I put sheets on them last night to keep the ice from getting to thick on their hair. Cold or wet is ok, not both. Temp was about 21 in the barn when I fed everyone at 9am.
Skipping out of work, commute will be too nasty to get home, provided no wrecks on the way. Good luck everyone with the power. Don’t forget to fill jugs with water and ice to use after the power goes off, same as usual. I’m going sledding later, so don’t forget to have fun too!
whats CB’s email?
Well, my prediction of 6+ for Lex area before the change over did not work out..
As the Fonze would say
“I was,
wr, wr, wr, wr, wr
wr, wr, wr, wr, wr
er, Incorrect”…
Hopefully, we will get our SNOW tonight/tomorrow…
…
I do not repeat DO NOT see it getting above freezing.

Cold depressing rain in pulaski county. Not suprised though. Im ready for 60’s and sunshine!!!! It dosen’t snow here anymore. Hope february is 20 degrees above average!!
I agree with Mitch actually. Mesonet shows temps. at Frankfort and Lexington ARE rising over the past few hours. LEX now sits at 27Β°F. We will likely touch the freezing mark early this afternoon.
Now it’s pouring freezing rain here in Carter County. With around 5 inches of snow, ice in the middle, then add on 4-6 inches of more snow late tonight into tomorrow that adds up to one big mess!
I really hope it stops with this freezing rain pretty soon, it’s pouring!
hey gang…I had to officially give it up for a couple of hrs…that sleep overrated, for the weak thing…well i gave in..:P
anyways…pouring the rain
35*
had some icing early this morning. that i did report to the NWS in JKL.
1.5″ of RAIN since 3am..
IN the back of my tired, sleep deprived mind…I say DO WE REALLY WANN GO THERE WITH SNOW ACCUMULATIONS TONIGHT…:(

snow storm 09 vid enjoy!
Man! I’m glad you mentioned the cell phone thing! I never thought of doing that if the power goes out!!!! I can get a signal here at my house if I stand by the sliding glass door on one leg at a 45 degree angle towards the south!!!

Richmond area hammered with ice. I have trees limbs down all over the lawn in the backyard where the dog is…he has finally sought shelter in his house – 1st time! Maybe he is smarter than I thought!. I needed to trim the trees, but money was tight…so mother nature is going to kill the trees!
What are the chances of this turning to snow? Are we still seeing freezing rain because the temps above the surface are above freezing? Someone please explain. When will we see a change over. From the looks of radars looks like a never ending sleet/freezing rain. Not sure the house/trees and dog can handle much more.

Moderate freezing rain in Lexington right now–theres pretty good icing out there, and the temps arent budging from 27 here in South Lexington.
BELSKI JUST POSTED HIS NOTES FROM THE NOAA CONFERENCE CALL, OVER ON HIS BLOG AT WAVE3…
\\\Quote:
Conference call
Power outages across portions of southern KY.
First system pretty much out of area
Afternoon: second wave precip. really gets going this evening…
Big question about surface temps…..how much warming….
Tonight’s ice storm will be further north
Just rain for southern KY today and tonight
Louisville to Lexington….anything this afternoon is light
This evening icing problems…. if the rain is heavy and temps in the lower 30s….road conditions won’t be as bad. Ice still accumulates on objects
Lexington may reach 33 overnight.
Major ice storm for southern Indiana…
Change over to snow late
Louisville to snow around 5 or 6 AM Lexington 8 AM Bowling Green 7 AM
Snow amounts…. 2 to 4 Louisville and southern Indiana
Temps around 30-32 this evening colder late tonight
The depth of the cold air is not as great as last night so the freezing efficiency not as good but considerable ice accumulation possible this evening
NWS says severe ice storm from Jasper to Salem to Madison could have major problems
Rush hour precip will be light
I asked about NAM and GFS with 2 inch precip. and they said the models sometimes overdo it but when they agree with this there is reason for concern.
32 degree line forecast for this evening is Hartsburg to just north of E’town to near Bardstown
Lincoln and Garrad counties have large power outages…up to 75% of the county without power
///End Quote
It’s all slushy over here….freezing rain and a mess!!! I’d say if we get ANY snow tonight like they’re saying then we won’t have school. I just wish they’d call it tonight instead of waiting til tomorrow morning!!!
Our power flickered once and I’ve had a hard time posting. Is your power holding steady?
Yep, and aircraft soundings are showing good warming trend aloft and that the shallow cold air dome is shrinking in depth. Based on what I see, I think temps will get to 32 degrees as far north as I-64.
HEY ((((( SNO-HOG )))) BAILEY !!!…
LOL..LOL…YOU NEVER SAID HOW MUCH SNOW IS IN BAILEY’S SNO-ZONE BACKYARD.. OR IF YOU DID I MISSED IT…EVERYONE ELSE AROUND YOU GOT 4-6″… ARE YA HOLDIN OUT ON US…lol.lol..lol..
I forgot the probability that all this crap is probably gonna freeze tonight too even if it doesn’t snow! I’m bettin’ no school tomorrow.
MJ:
What’s your take on Snow chances..??
Tonight-Wed–week..???
Lex area at least..??
…
7.5 inches in Hebron, KY….NKY Airport…..just thought I would rub it in folks….lol
26 degrees in Georgetown. ’bout 3 inches of snow with a solid coating of ice on top of it. Not much falling from the sky at the moment. Think we are finished for awhile?
Anyone wanting to go ice skating? The streets in the Masterson Station area are frozen solid. I gave up trying to get my car in to the garage. Hopefully it doesn’t slide off the sidewalk. Cell phone service isn’t working right now either.
well according to this…the change over tonight, is gonna be moved up to tomorrow now!! if the change over dont occur until around 7 or 8 for lex. and B.G. well that puts east ky.. in a rain event right up until 10-12noonish….I thought it was to change over sooner than that !!!..O.K. boys whats up with that…mitch, tommy, shane,,with a later changeover do we still get some descent accumulations??..
Oh well…. since we in southern ky got hosed AGAIN… on to the next chance for us. Think this will pan out?
http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/gfs/12/model_l.shtml
Here in London we have ice on the trees and power lines, but we haven’t lost power. There’s a cold rain out there right now as the temps are just above freezing. The roads seem to be okay, maybe icy in spots. The Mister just went out okay and our street is not travelled much, so it must be okay for bread and milk runs before the next wave. KYT is reporting that Danville has a lot of power outages.
Oh, forgot to add, my cellphone service (Sprint) went to roaming earlier, so we must have a tower out somewhere.
MY BAD!!! TRY THIS.. Think this will pan out?
http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/gfs/12/images/gfs_pcp_150l.gif
I know the freezing line should make a difference with what falls, but honestly I don’t see it. We haven’t been any warmer than 27* (right now in Lex) for this whole event, and the primary thing that has fallen is freezing rain. Even in Texas, that FedEx plane crashed this morning after a night of freezing rain and temps at 17* !!!! I’m afraid BubbaG is right, but it’s still hard to accept. Especially knowing the kind of snows we used to get. I hope the snow does come tonight. Only time will tell though. Thanks CB for all your hard work!!
Which model? I say a bunch of days of models…
Day 7 GFS looks promising! π haha! Already talking about another one… the ever so talked about 7 day out storm…
http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/gfs/12/images/gfs_pcp_156l.gif
makes me sad you watching TWC π
Rain..Rain..Rain..down on the border, with 36* and most of the ice from early morning has melted.Okay Chris…Is this all I am getting way down here?YUK !
My power hasn’t went out (yet). It’s a mess over here too. Well Martin, Rowan, and Lee Counties have all already closed for tomorrow. I guess they closed because of the snow tomorrow afternoon.
I promised a new video of Max this morning, and I have it on youtube..!!
Once it “clears wavers” I will post the link..!!
he is basically skating in my back yard…lol
…
hey linda…I’m sailing the ARK on over in about an hr. or so…lol…be ready to go.. now you know rain RULES down here..lol…
The 12Z NAM surface temps. keep LEX/FFT below freezing until around midnight. Then we stay above freezing for about 10 hours. This could really ease the overall impact of the storm tonight. However, RUC seems to be coming in a bit cooler than the NAM.
Crystal, Your last post on the prior page was soooooo funny!! “As a wise man once said—weeeeeeeeee!” I am still laughing and its so true!! Love ya Rolo.
Moderate to heavy freezing rain falling now.
gfs was also not above 32 for 10 hours but did get there for 4-6 hours. but the ruc and sref are colder solutions.
Okay Tim! I’m packed with a change of clothes and lots of food!!! π So I’m READY!!
NEW VID OF MAX…
Enjoy…

…
@ 2″ of snow with sleet on top today in Frankfort. Currently at 1235 p.m. freezing rain.
hvy ice moving back in to lexington area and those who have already had an ice storm around danville and richmond.
an intresting observation for the past few hours 33* at bwg with frz rain and somerset 34* with lgt snow.
Does that mean cold air is starting to win out aloft??? Please…
oh I dont have cable it just on my desktop. Is there a better one? More local to put on my desktop?
Great video Vinny! Max looked great skating in the backyard!
Max is too cute! Thanks for sharing the video with us!
I always loved it when The Fonze tried to say he was wrong.
I’m no weather expert, but it sure looks like the rain has/is moving farther south towards Tennessee.
Just drove from Wilmore home to Lex….ice still coming down, but roads were okay except for the stretch by Southland Christian.
Just wanted to let you all know I am without power, don’t know when it will be back on. I had to travel to my dad’s to get on a pc. I hope everyone else is safe. The road to my house is closed on 1750 because of trees down, so I had to go out the other way. The roads are slushy, but still slick. I really miss being able to read the weather updates and your comments. As soon as I get power back on I will let you know. Stay safe!
I think we need to do one of those group trips like they take to New York City. Get a bus and sell off tickets to a trip to the mountains somewhere in the middle of winter for a four or five day snow getaway. However, I’m sure if that happen with a bunch of snow lovers from Kentucky going there they would end up with a warmup and rain. LOL
*** NEW UPDATE ***
truman, where u located??
Jim Cantore of the weather channel is reporting from paducah. I wonder if he’ll travel up through the state as the storm progresses
Its 28.4 here in nicholasville…I don’t see the temp getting above freezing here…..time will tell,. Trees are sure coated. Everything is fine right now, but it would not take much more freezing rain at all to become destructive…
I just called ATT cellular service about why I can’t make calls and they said they’re having an outage. No phone calls can be made except to them or to 911 in the event of an emergency.
I think it is strangely related with the Ohio river; I don’t know how a river is so influential in weather but it is. The gods of weather understand it but I dont
Vinny, that is one cute boxer! loved it.
