Good Monday everyone and thanks for a great weekend of blogging with me! I appreciate all the help you guys gave me in tracking the snows across the state. Overall… I am very happy with the weekend forecast we put out late last week. Things went pretty smoothly.
Our Sunday snow showers picked up some steam in a few spots. They gave me another half to one inch of snow Sunday evening to bring my weekend total to 2″ and my seasonal total at my house to 25″. Not too bad if I must say so myself! ![]()
February is slowing coming to an end and this time next week March will be in day number 2 already. Will the month end on a wild not to cause March to come roaring in? Well… that is a possibility if you look at some of the latest computer models. More on that in a moment.
Let’s check out what comes between now and then.
Today will be another cold one as temps struggle to hit 32 in most areas after starting out in the low and mid teens. We will likely hold on to some flurries or snow showers early in the day in the east.
Temps will warm on Tuesday and we should be able to flirt with 40 after another cold start. Warmer air will begin to work in from the west later Tuesday night into Wednesday. There is the chance for some warm air advection rain or snow showers during this time. Not a great chance but we will have to watch it. Once the warm front swings northward… temps on Wednesday will head toward 50.
A cold front approaches the area Thursday with showers and some thunderstorms developing. Some locally heavy rains will be possible to go along with gusty winds. Much colder air will move in later in the day and Friday. What happens to this front? Does it make it’s way all the way into the deep south or does it become stationary allowing for a big storm to develop along it? That is the question we will be tackling over the next few days.
The European and Canadian models both show a HUGE arctic air outbreak along with a MAJOR eastern US winter storm for the weekend into early next week. Now… this is not the first time these models have shown something like this to only back off from it a few days later. I am just showing you the models folks! ![]()
Check it out…
EUROPEAN Saturday
Sunday
As you can see… that is nothing short of a monster the model is showing and the Canadian looks very similar. Both park a huge closed upper level low right on top of us this weekend as well. That is a great setup for a biggie around here. Are the models right? Probably not… well, not unless they are still showing this Wednesday or Thursday!
Regardless… it will make for some fun tracking this week! ![]()
Have a great Monday and I will update things later today. Take care.

Thanks for all your hard work Chris.
I’m guessing those 2 flakes weighted down Rolo’s comm lines. 😉
next weekend will be like this past weekend will get a lil snow
Well Chris, you nailed another one with Saturday’s snow! The interesting thing about it was that I was in N. Central Indiana this weekend, and drove back Saturday night, and the most snow I ran into was at home! There was a pretty major snowstorm going on in the lower lakes, but the brunt of it missed the area where I was, and in fact just north of Louisville in S. Indiana, there was no snow at all. It steadily increased as I drove west on I-64, and by the time I got to Jessamine Co., there was lost of blowing and drifting. I estimate at mu house that we got close to 3″. The grass was completely covered (none sticking out at all)and this morning it was down near 10°F!

The days before Spring have a chance of being wild- just keep the ice and wind 🙂
Crystal—I’m so glad you got a new pet….I know it won’t be the same as your old buddy that you had for 15 years but it will be good company. I think pet lovers just have to have pets!! We had a Cairn Terrier for 8 years and then she died of kidney failure…worst of all they tried to tell me at the vet that it was probably from poisoning. I was devastated and wracked with guilt. I never did figure out how that could’ve happened. But since then I’ve read that those dogs get diabetes so I’m convinced from hind sight and other symptoms she always had that it could’ve just as well have been diabetes….they never tested her for that. Right after she died my husband MADE ME go buy a new puppy. He is a lot like your new kitten—wild as a buck and TOTALLY different than my other dog. But we’ve had him about a year and a half and he is settling down some and I wouldn’t take anything for him…he’s smart as a tack and was housebroken in about a week…..if anyone out there wants a dog that’s easy to housebreak…this is the breed–he is a miniature schnauzer. And he also talks….it’s not English but he does talk…..it’s hilarious.
Anyway, I’m glad you got another cat….it’s so hard to let them go and they can’t be replaced….but once again, a pet lover has to have a pet!!!
Thanks Chris!
Since some of us who usually LOVE snow are getting a little ansy for spring, I bet we get more snow next week!
I agree with BubbaG 100 percent! Please, no more ice and wind!
You do realize this site is about Weather, right?
I’m glad you cleared that up
Well, those of us that have gotten to know each other pretty well talk about UK Wildcats, Super Bowl, our jobs, our families, big events in our lives, etc. We have become a weather “family” and talk about many things. Evidently, the owner of the blog has no problem with that and I’m sure we are all very appreciative of the closeness he has allowed us to develop amongst ourselves.
If you don’t want to read the posts about things other than weather, skip over them.
Yes, I think everyone realizes that, Circular. Sometimes opinions and other details of our lives get thrown in, and the only thing Chris has forbidden is the discussion of politics.
So, while it is a weather community, some of us have been posting so long it’s a little like having a “cyber” family.
Basketball is often discussed on here, and while I am not a huge sports fan, I like reading the comments, and some weather speculation gets thrown in along the way.
It’s a little like socializing at a get-together. 🙂
Thanks Rhonda!
I agree with Rhonda and Pike 100%
No problem, Pike. That’s one of the reasons I love this blog, is that we can discuss other things (except politics, lol)…and I love animals, too.
Thanks, Andy. Vinny started a great tradition with us, didn’t he? I find myself agreeing often with others, 100 percent 🙂
Well said, and I agree.
If I might throw in my 1/2 cent in (inflation you know) I agree with all my blog buddies. A lot of us have posted daily for years. We know and care about one another and on slow days we do like to catch up on one another lives. We all appreciate Chris letting us do this.
18.5” on the season in my backyard!!!!!!!!!! i just need a ten inch snow and i will be satisfied for this winter
Well, I agree with you Circular…I come to the weathe site to find out about the weather not personal lives. That’s what Facebook is for.
I agree RhondaB, but I promise NEVER to bring up politics again, ever. 100%ever. LOL
andy i recieved half inch, just a bit more than i was expecting see i said a dusting at best.
naa U KNOW sometimes even us LAZY people have to get out away from puter.
glad some of u got some snow. it all gone around here except in shelter areas.
I agree with Andy, Pike, Rhonda, and Patty – 100%!
Those of you complaining about the idle chitter-chatter that goes on around here when weather isn’t as active, well, you’ll either get over it – or you won’t. To me, the complaining is much more obnoxious than having to read about someone’s personal life. 😉
yet another cold morning. the snow sure looks pretty. makes me want to go take some pictures. unfortunately, by the time I get away from the office, it will all melt! 🙁
Happy Monday all.
well only blog i know that is exclusively for weather is accuweather they have plenty of meteorologists there that should satisfy your needs. As long as Chris doesn’t mind we talk about whatever.
Rolo,
Nice to see you make it back. We got two inches down in our southeastern KY area. We got those two flakes in less than five/tenths of a second.
Song of the day – Just cam’t seem to get it right today. – Joe Purdy.
Hi everyone. I stumbled across this site while searching the Internet for information about Eastern Kentucky. Im a graduate student at USC (University of Southern California), going for a Master’s in Sociology.
I’m writing a thesis about the worst places in America, in regards to education, crime, poverty, despair, and well, life in general. The mountains of Eastern Kentucky are one of a few places that have been identified. Is there someone I could speak with who lives there that could help me by answering some questions?
I think Richmond had a total of eight or nine inches of snow for the winter and perhaps eleven inches if we count ice and sleet.
I do not recall as wimpy a snow year as this. We have not had three inches of snow on the ground at one time- just an inch or two & melt, etc.
I suppose if I count the ice and snow we got a few weeks ago, that was over three inches at one time- bleh.
Cingular:
We can all see you’re an intelligent individual, if the weather is all you are looking for, then just read Chris’ post and move on, but…there are multiple insightful weather people on this blog who not only keep us all informed with the daily weather information, they work together in severe or hazardous situations to help keep those of us who read the blog safe. If you have to read a few posts about our pets, our grandchildren, or the song of the day (which I myself look forward to) to get to the weather, then so what. That isn’t too much to ask for receiving such talented weather information from good people.
I agree with Clan 100%!
That’s exactly right. As long as you are not talking about how February is still 2° above normal at Lexington, 4.3° above normal in Frankfort, or about how Michael Porter sucks you are fine. 🙂 Everything else is fair game here. Let the Ice Age begin!
Sure, I am a student too and know what it is like looking for info. tarajchaney@yahoo.com
last yr was more of a wimp than this yr we have had 4 inches and that was with 1 snow this yr in my back yard. Which is 1 inch more than we totaled last yr
Susan G: What kind of response do you think that you are going to get with that type of question? I must not live in Eastern Kentucky since I’m middle class, have a college degree, never been convicted of a crime, and am happily married and have a great outlook on life. I must live in California…. I wished someone would have told me before now.
It would be hard for me to uphold a thesis that was about how “bad” Eastern Ky is. I think it is one of the best places in the world to live with many desirable attributes. There is poverty everywhere…just walk down the streets of New York City. I would rather educate my kids here than anywhere…I don’t have to worry about gang violence at all. I’m positive the crime rate is relatively lower here than in big cities.
We have beautiful mountains, loyal neighbors who see to each other in times of need, tight knit families, traditions that are passed from generation to generation. HOW could this possibly be one of the worst places in America?
as of yesterday we were .8 above normal in knox
Crystal…:)~ So happy you’ve gotten another kitty!(I just found out)I know what you mean about it being your ‘hubby’s cat’..lol..just before my mom passed in Feb 06, we got a Border Terrier,”Buster Brown”, which I consider the last gift Mom ever gave me/us..and unfortunatly, Mom was “too far out of it” by that time to really get to know B.B., as she would have loved him..anyways..he took right up with my husband..last year we got a Scottie/Spitz mix puppy-our first female dog ever-and once again-she took up with my hubby..we call her our “Velcro Pup”because she practically stays glued to his side.I’m a little jealous, but hey-at least the 6 cats love me!!;)

I guess a lot has to do with what kind of questions you have.
I’m also a student, so I know it can be difficult when you’re trying to find information. E-mail is: debbie5556@yahoo.com

Beautiful mountains, loyal neighbors, tigh-knit families, “gang-less” schools, traditions passed from generation to generation …hmmm..I could think of worse places to live.
stay safe out there. black ice in Pike Co.
Are your roads STILL bad????
How in the could this be one of the worst places in America? Rolling mountains, loyal neighbors, close knit families, traditions handed down from generation to generation, “gang-less” schools….I think it’s the BEST place to live and raise a family!
* That was supposed to be “How in the world”
Prob will be any run off from melting will freeze back tonight as well.
Susan some of us mountain folks thinks that EKY is a great place to live. We do have concerns about education, poverty, etc.. But don’t most states have their problems with what you have mentioned. Inner cities have lots of crime, poverty and despair. I have lived here nearly a half century in EKY, have a college degree and a good job. I know you are not trying to stereotype EKY, but a lot of folks do.
the girl from usc is right eky is one of the worst place to live no offense(i mean it) poor education and poverty(this is the reason why everyone thinks ky is a bunch of dumbrednecks) one again NO OFFENSE
two tips for you
1. focus on the coal industry
2. drug use stats may be useful to you as well.
saturday starting to look like there will be another winter type system jkl discusion did a nice write up on it. we’re also getting closer to normal for the month of feb.
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ffc/HotSeat/hotseatstart.shtml
a link to the severe weather simulator from yesturday you get to be a nws meteo during a severe weather event issuing warnings it takes about 15-25 min.
Yes Susan, I’ll answer your questions. I am a student as well, born and raised in the heart of Appalachia (aka Hazard, KY. Write me at jeremy_bussey2@eku.edu.
Worst places in America should not be limited though. Big cities and poverty stricken backlands can both be bad places.
Well, I respectfully disagree with the “poor education”. I’m a teacher and I know we work our tails off and are held to high standards. NOW…if you want to talk about parents not making their kids come to school I can talk to you about why some kids get a poor education. HOWEVER, go to Jefferson Co schools if you want to see some rough school conditions and as far as drug use…it’s EVERYWHERE not just in Eastern KY. I still stand by my original statement that it is a great place to raise kids.
AMEN, just becuase its traditional non-communist doesnt make it a bad place, i know plenty of fine ppl from eastern ky, why dont you do your masters about nyc or some queer town like boston or san fran
that’s your opinion Lincoln, i and most of my family are from the hill’s of Eastern Kentucky and we love it there, like it was posted before Rolling mountains, loyal neighbors, close knit families, traditions handed down from generation to generation, “gang-less” schools….I think it’s the BEST place to live and raise a family! And in regards to education, crime, poverty, despair, everyone and every city and county in the USA has that and its not something we are proud of but its something that we have and can do nothing about it. Also on the crime watch the news, How many time’s U see someone having a home invasion in pike county or Eastern Kentucky but it happens every night in Lexington. President Johnson traveled to Inez, Kentucky, in 1964 to announce his “War on Poverty.” Yet today, more than 40 years later, the problem of concentrated poverty persists in many parts of the region. investments in education may provide the key to reducing persistent poverty in regions such as Appalachia. A look at some trends in poverty and educational attainment in Appalachia over the past two decades confirms that the two are strongly related.Like winter’s first snow, poverty penetrates deep into Appalachia. And while the quality of life in much of the region has improved over the last four decades, many Appalachian communities, specifically those in Central Appalachia, have been left behind. The billions of federal dollars that have improved highways, water systems and access to education and job training have been allocated disproportionately. Did you know that Lee County has Kentucky’s fourth highest poverty rate. most of the jobs are low-paying service jobs and where residents often must commute two hours or more one way to work. Of the nearly 8,000 people in Lee County, 34.6 percent live in poverty “They’re hard-working people who want to improve life for their children and themselves, but they can get stuck so long in this mold, and they can lose their will.” the solution must be homegrown When a child grows up in poverty, those conditions help shape his future. So, as poverty lingers in the region like the smell of burning leaves, so does the opportunity to make a difference.
I’ll climb down from my box Now!!!
Sorry everyone.
Rolo I’m in east london and I got about 2. 5 inches at my house there must be a dome over your yard!
Bravo!
One of the first places you should search is the Kentucky Department of Education for facts and rankings about Eastern Kentucky. I have lived other places. While living in Ohio I met more people from Eastern Ky than Ohio.
the Iowa one is more simple than the others
12z euro backed off the pefect storm above.
i didnt say anything about drugs
Thanks Pike!!!!
Sorry-you’re right. You mentioned poverty….that’s everywhere too. I’ll never forget all the beggars and homeless people I saw in NYC when I visited there. So sad!
lets take a look at household income anderson co. nearly $47000 pike co. 32,000(though it has gone up 1999 it was 29,000). Now to education if your a teacher congrats because kentucky 5 years ago was #47 in education now were to 31 so good job to you. FINALLY firefighter my school(1,500 students), no my whole county is gangless. The only way to escape a poverty stricken county or area is to move you have to get out. Im sorry thats how it is. im not trying to offend anyone if i did i apologize.
its over my yard to i only got a half inch by the time it was all said and done
well hell if if pike co. had 8,000,000 people instead of 60,000 living there im preety sure you would have homeless people all over the place to. Good gosh people put it to scale you cant compare a town to a city thats the largest in the u.s.
I happen to be a math teacher so I tend to be cynical about statistics…not that they’re erroneous but they shouldn’t stand alone. For example, when comparing income you also have to take into consideration cost of living. And I’m glad we’ve gone up in the rankings because we have all worked hard but I wonder what those rankings are based on…..some type of test no doubt….and don’t even get me started on all the cultural biases involved in different types of testing that is used for assessments.
I DO NOT believe that the way to escape a poverty stricken area is to leave…I believe the key is to do our part to change the area in the form of educating people and lobbying for job opportunities.

No offense taken here…everyone has a right to their opinion and this is one of those topics where opinions are MANY.
Well hell, missed the point…..homelessness is not a stand out issue in Eastern KY….it’s a nationwide problem. That’s just the only place I ever witnessed it firsthand.

I disagree with you completely. I graduated from Phelps High School in 2004 and I think they have some wonderful teachers who I learned a lot from. I hate when this area is labeled as a place where you can’t get a good education. The opportunities are there for students to get a great education, but they have to work hard and try their best. The sad thing is that some students simply don’t care about getting good grades and succeeding in school, and that is definitely not the teacher’s fault. But, that is true in all areas. You can always find students who think school isn’t a high priority. It it definitely not unique to this area. About the poverty, it is everywhere, not just this area. Do a little research online and you can find articles about poverty all over the United States.
I went to a ballgame in Cincinnati a few years ago and it ended at around 10 PM. We walked out of the stadium and saw limos and the next street over was a street of homeless people. I agree; homelessness is everywhere
That was me above.
18z gfs run going with winter system for the weekend as well.
Not sold on our winter chances yet… but the possibility is on the table. I wouldn’t be willing to bite on air about this thing for at least another 48 hours. However the potential is definitely there… but as we’ve seen so many time, just because we see the potential, doesn’t mean we’ll get it.
YEAH LETS TALK ABOUT WEATHER INSTEAD OF WHAT THE TWINKS OUT IN CALIFORNIA THINK ABOUT KY…THEY ARE A COUNTRY ALL BY THEMSELVES SEPERATE FROM MOST OF US AND PROBABLY HAVE MORE DRUGS POVERTY AIDS AND HOMELESS THEN KY OR EVEN NYC PER CAPITA PERIOD
I don’t believe the models right now, not after the last two “Major winter storms” turned into weaklings… I don’t know, maybe we’ll get one to go our way. I just don’t believe it right now.
I would gladly take one major snow this coming weekend, then call it a winter and start with the warm-up… who’s with me?
Yeah, there are spots of black ice. At Canada, Ky in Pike Co. there are many icy spots. One question, do you know why Perry/Leslie counties are closed tomorrow? I thought we maight be on a delay.
Pretty decent day here. Some sun, some flurries and snow still on ground but has melted some. I said to heck with the cold and snow and did some yard work anyhow. Got a huge fire going and pretty soon didnt even notice the cold.
Talking to my relatives back in S.C. I think they think I am lying when I referenced the snow on the ground. Their like ,huh? But thats how national news outlets inacurately report our weather. Listening to national weather reports one would almost think our weather is same as say somehwere in Georgia……….Oh well what the heck. Daffodills are blooming in Carolina. Aint seen nuttin here close to spring yet. Unless you wanna count our tornadoes.
Anyone getting the snow showing up on the radar?? I think I seen a flurry not too long ago.
Do you have contact information?
I’m with you! Give me a foot and then spring!
I run a business in Somerset and I am amazed at the number of refugees from California I have come into my shop. All are middle class people that as soon as they retired got the hell out, Taxes are astronomical, crime is high, and the “socialist” movement has taken the state. Hard working people that think for themselves and provide for themselves are leaving in droves. All this has left are illegals and others with their hands out to the govt. No wonder they are so broke!! No offense Susan, but you need not look but out your front window to see the worst place to live in America. As a matter of fact, what exactly about California is still “American”? We will still be here “clinging to our guns and religion”, your welcome here anytime. Dont blame you if you leave.
i feel the same way just updating on what the models have
instead of
clap on… clap off
it’s storm on… storm off
whatever i give up im battling 50 people on something you will only see if you lived there and moved…. when i say poverty im not dumb duhh!!! its everywhere but based on percentages its worse in east ky than many places and i never said anything about homeless until someone mentioned it.
im done no one reply to this no one mention another word of this its a weather blog lets get back normal if thats ok with everyone!
LOL!!!
I didn’t know those schools were out! My cousin teaches at Perry and we have a friendly rivalry about snow days!!! Crap she got one up on me because I’m sure we’re going to have school. Like I said, there won’t be anymore delays. We have to cancel if a delay is necessary because we’re out of delays and if we delay we have to make up a whole day. Sounds pretty stupid to me but that’s what the big wigs said….as in Superintendent.
But if you love your home and heritage you could stick around and try to change things. Education is a powerful thing. And no one can ever take it away.
I’m not trying to be disrespectful or judge you in anyway, but are you a student? Because when I was younger my thoughts on issues like this were way different than they are at my ripe old age of 42. Sometimes age makes you have different views. For instance, I know students that think they HATE Eastern KY and that they’ll never come back after they graduate….but sometimes when they get out into the big bad world they miss these old mountains.
I’m ready for the monotony of Summer weather, this winter has been a forecasting migraine 😛
how many tornadoes have we had ?
im a junior at anderson county high school but i want to move back to texas im thinking of going to the university of texas! if not then ill go to uk
50 ..???
Dang boy, maybe you should not condemn others until you learn simple math… huh..? Giving you the benefit of doubt, maybe you battling 6 or 7, but 50… ???
lol
…
Please contact me, I want to tell you why this is a great place to live. I grew up in NKY and moved to EKY with my husband after we graduated college. We live on 100+ acres in a log home with our 2 kids, dogs, deer and turkey. My husband and I do just fine and can’t wait for our kids to grow up in this little town. This is a great place to live. I can send you pictures and more information if needed.
just trying to come with a quick number lol
I’m just messin’ dawg…lol
…
Susan, Idon’t look at what you said in that way, though. You merely made a statement without the intention of upsetting others. I agree 100 percent with you, lol, we will never bring them up again!
(Vinny started a “thang” with the agreement…wherever you are Vinny…Snap!!!)
Your place sounds wonderful…
Pike I am sorry our conversation started all this.I value your friendship and I fill like we are a blog family.
I had 3 wonderful instructors in Nursing school and have traveled alot and there are no better people then here in Eastern Ky.
And if you looked a little further you would see that the advice to “move out” is one of the major problems. Its called Brain Drain, were all the intellectual capital is removed from an area. How can we expect the tide of poverty to turn with no educated leaders in the region to fight. Amazing strides were taken with the formation of the Appalachian Regional Commission following the publication of the landmark book “Night Comes to the Cumberlands”, but government action and intervention has been limited. Add to that the drain of bright, driven young people from the region and the problem only doubles.
I’m sure we could collect enough money for you a bus ticket back to Texas. I’m willing to kick in for a one way ticket. Good riddance.
can you say immature.
That’s not very nice. He’s just a kid and a pretty good one most of the time. Aside from the “sharting” conversation…. 🙂
Err…meant to reply to Bobt
EVERYONE BREATH!!!!! IN…..NOW OUT……..AHHHH…NOW ISNT THAT MUCH BETTER…..THERE’S A SNOWSTORM A COMIN’…GETS YA SNOW BOOTS READY….LOL….
Good summary!
I wanted to add that one reason that job opportunities lag in eastern KY is the lack of dependable cell phone service. Seriously. I read a couple years ago someone telling that he was traveling with some foreign investors out the Mtn Pkwy and they lost cell phone contact and completely freaked. Business people depend on constant access to communication to run business and consumate deals. I can say that less than two mile from Winchester we hit the dead zone. I had all the contact zones memorized when I drove that road on a regular basis.
yall still remember that lol that was like a month ago lol
I’m in central Laurel County and I got just under 1.25.
Hey BobT, since you’re being so generous, will you pay for my bus ticket back to NC? LOL! 😉
Not buying it…
Lincoln, there is nothing wrong with the education in EKY. I am from EKY, although my family moved to South Central KY when I was in the second grade when they enrolled me in school, the teacher seen that I was finishing my work before anyone else in the classroom and was having to find other stuff for me to do while I waited on the rest of the class to get finished. The school gave me several different tests then moved me up to the 3rd grade. The school contacted my old school to get my grades, etc. and found out that I was an average A & B student there. I was in my 3rd grade class for about 3 weeks when the teacher noticed I was ahead of her class as well, my 3rd grade teacher personally called my old school and talked to my old teacher they compared notes and she found out they were teaching the students with more advanced books than my new school was using, I was then skipped on to the 4th grade. Because of the GREAT education I started out with in EKY I graduated High School 2 weeks after I turned 16. (I have since settled in Laurel County)
Holy crap! I know all about that trip. Someone real close to me was on that bus. It was a bus load of Japanese businessmen. They lost signal near Campton and was very disturbed.
Wow small world.
Uh, so, the weekend winter storm has disappeared completely off the 00Z GFS.
Exactly, the models don’t have a clue… At least when it comes to winter weather…
The models are more bipolar than Golem and Smigel from the Lord of the Rings.
Hey Shane…weren’t those two characters the same one? Wouldn’t that be schizophrenia? Maybe the models are schizophrenic? 🙂
I think technically they suffered from multiple personalty disorder, but yeah the point I was trying to get across is it seems like the models *Especially the GFS* is arguing with it’s self like Golem and Smigel did in the movies. It’s just mind blowing the difference 6 hours can make from one run to another.

The GFS Says no storm, The Canadian says, yes storm. Just looking at the 18z vs 0z runs of the GFS, the 0z doesn’t pull the polar jet as far south as the 18z did. The 0z is also moving the front through faster and not developing our coastal Low Pressure like the 18z did. That explains the differences in what they’re showing, but I’m having a hard time figuring out the why’s of it all.
