*****SPECIAL UPDATE*****

Just a quick update on the snow showers that are moving across central and eastern Kentucky. We are seeing some nice bands of snow showers showing up on radar. The sun has set, temps are dropping into the 20s with snow showers… all this will lead to slick roads this evening and overnight. A few areas may even pick up close to an inch of snow out of this… especially in the east where the snow showers will be heavier. These heavier bursts will reduce visibilities and may also throw a light accumulation of snow on a few roads. Please low down and be careful if you are traveling this evening.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled blog post.

Good Friday afternoon gang. Our little clipper system is rolling through right now with snow showers and flurries. I will have more on that coming up in a bit. Before we get to the look ahead… here is a look back at the winter storm that hit parts of the area last night…

Brian (EastKyEMT) from Lee County sent in these pics of their heavy wet snow…

Here are a couple of Christmas card pics. Our first comes from Jennifer in Menifee County…

Linda in McCreary Captured the snowy scene down there for us…

Man… those are great! Thanks to everyone who sent in pics. It turns out we our area of 4″-6″ was a little broader than first thought as several counties reported totals in that range.

Ok… moving on now to the weather of now and the future.

Our clipper is moving through the state… right on cue. It is bringing numerous snow showers anf flurries to go along with breezy and cold weather out there. Here is the radar..

The heavier snow showers can put down some light accumulations… especially once the sun goes down. This can cause some slick travel this evening in a few spots so be careful if out traveling.

Temps tonight will be cold with high teens to low 20s. Sunshine on Saturday will boost temps only into the mid to upper 30s for yet ANOTHER well below normal day. Seems to be a common theme since early November!

Thermometers will actually rebound for Sunday and Monday ahead of a strong arctic front. Highs Sunday and Monday will shoot into the 40s and even the 50s Monday on a gusty southwest wind. The front moving in will have an amazing temp gradient with it and will bring rain to start with snow or ice lurking for Monday night and Tuesday as temps crash.

This is actually an air mass that MAY make me start looking at the NAM again as it used to handle low level, arctic cold better than the other models. Here is the NAM for Monday Evening…

You can see that cold surging in here. The GFS is a tad slower with it… but also shows the concern here…

Tuesday Morning

The problem for the models and forecasters is that surface temps are going to be much colder than the “upstairs” model progs would suggest. Another thing is that the cold air is VERY dense and usually oozes farther south than the models indicate. I have seen this happen MANY times in the past. Just look at the models right now. They were giving people a FALSE signal of a major warm up for next week across just about the entire central and eastern part of the country. Folks.. that is just not going to happen and we actually need to be watching the cold to see if it comes farther south than what is being shown right now.

The south IS going to see a big warm surge for much of next week. This happens as bitterly cold air invades the rest of the country. This will put Kentucky in the battle zone that can lead to some possible nasty wintry weather. It can also lead to some WILD temps across the region as well with the cold and warm fighting it out.

All of this spells Overrunning snow and ice for the Ohio Valley next week into Christmas week. Just look at the snow totals the GFS is throwing out for next Monday through Tuesday Night….

The ICE threat is there too…

Now… if my theory that the cold MAY come farther south than the models are showing… well… you get the idea!

I will have another update this evening so make sure you check back. Again… please play nice!!! Santa and the Grinch (me in the blog’s case) will be watching you!
