*****SPECIAL UPDATE*****
Just a quick update on the snow showers that are moving across central and eastern Kentucky. We are seeing some nice bands of snow showers showing up on radar. The sun has set, temps are dropping into the 20s with snow showers… all this will lead to slick roads this evening and overnight. A few areas may even pick up close to an inch of snow out of this… especially in the east where the snow showers will be heavier. These heavier bursts will reduce visibilities and may also throw a light accumulation of snow on a few roads. Please low down and be careful if you are traveling this evening.
Now, back to your regularly scheduled blog post. ![]()
Good Friday afternoon gang. Our little clipper system is rolling through right now with snow showers and flurries. I will have more on that coming up in a bit. Before we get to the look ahead… here is a look back at the winter storm that hit parts of the area last night…
Brian (EastKyEMT) from Lee County sent in these pics of their heavy wet snow…

Here are a couple of Christmas card pics. Our first comes from Jennifer in Menifee County…
Linda in McCreary Captured the snowy scene down there for us…
Man… those are great! Thanks to everyone who sent in pics. It turns out we our area of 4″-6″ was a little broader than first thought as several counties reported totals in that range.
Ok… moving on now to the weather of now and the future.
Our clipper is moving through the state… right on cue. It is bringing numerous snow showers anf flurries to go along with breezy and cold weather out there. Here is the radar..
The heavier snow showers can put down some light accumulations… especially once the sun goes down. This can cause some slick travel this evening in a few spots so be careful if out traveling.
Temps tonight will be cold with high teens to low 20s. Sunshine on Saturday will boost temps only into the mid to upper 30s for yet ANOTHER well below normal day. Seems to be a common theme since early November! ![]()
Thermometers will actually rebound for Sunday and Monday ahead of a strong arctic front. Highs Sunday and Monday will shoot into the 40s and even the 50s Monday on a gusty southwest wind. The front moving in will have an amazing temp gradient with it and will bring rain to start with snow or ice lurking for Monday night and Tuesday as temps crash.
This is actually an air mass that MAY make me start looking at the NAM again as it used to handle low level, arctic cold better than the other models. Here is the NAM for Monday Evening…
You can see that cold surging in here. The GFS is a tad slower with it… but also shows the concern here…
Tuesday Morning
The problem for the models and forecasters is that surface temps are going to be much colder than the “upstairs” model progs would suggest. Another thing is that the cold air is VERY dense and usually oozes farther south than the models indicate. I have seen this happen MANY times in the past. Just look at the models right now. They were giving people a FALSE signal of a major warm up for next week across just about the entire central and eastern part of the country. Folks.. that is just not going to happen and we actually need to be watching the cold to see if it comes farther south than what is being shown right now.
The south IS going to see a big warm surge for much of next week. This happens as bitterly cold air invades the rest of the country. This will put Kentucky in the battle zone that can lead to some possible nasty wintry weather. It can also lead to some WILD temps across the region as well with the cold and warm fighting it out.
All of this spells Overrunning snow and ice for the Ohio Valley next week into Christmas week. Just look at the snow totals the GFS is throwing out for next Monday through Tuesday Night….
The ICE threat is there too…
Now… if my theory that the cold MAY come farther south than the models are showing… well… you get the idea! ![]()
I will have another update this evening so make sure you check back. Again… please play nice!!! Santa and the Grinch (me in the blog’s case) will be watching you! ![]()

Snowing lightly here in Flemingsburg…got kinda heavy earlier but it all melted. Maybe next week will be interesting. I am hoping for snow…I would rather have rain instead of the ice…ice is no fun! By the way, could someone explain to me the 50’s for Monday and Tuesday when Chris is saying we will be lucky to hit the 40’s? Is Chris just that good or is everyone else just that bad?
Snow increasing lol
Thanks Chris…for the update and the GREAT pics. With temps in the 50s on Monday, potential rain, and the snow melting, will there be another threat for flooding?
Hey Chris, it is pouring down the snow right now in Grayson, Ky… Do you think this clipper may have some potential?
Tell it to me straight — are we looking at ice storm next week?
My hubby will be out of town and I’ve got a farm to run. As of yesterday all I heard about was rain. Regular ol’ liquid rain.
Seeing the footage from NY brought back bad memories of 2003. No ice storms!!
chris:nws/louisville is on the same page
significant snow or ice southern indiana
and northern kentucky monday night-tuesday morning
Robert he is that good. You will see for yourself if you keep on blogging with us lol
Well Tim looks like we get left out again
Guys your pictures are beautiful thank you.
this time lex is TOO FAR SOUTHEAST OMG
CB:
We need to bump that south about 75 miles…
Any chance of the powerful blizzard that’s gonna’ hit the Dakota’s bringing in more arctic air then the models are showing..?
…
Unfortunately that snowfall map is probably about right because it reflects very well what we’ve been experiencing for the last decade: Ohio River on north gets a thumping, and we get our usual 33° rain…
These snow showers have eaten their wheaties! Local amounts to an inch possible in the heaviest bands. Local being the key word! 😉 Take care!
If I read that LMK discussion correctly, the Monday storm might produce some freezng rain, but then transition to ice pellets and snow. I don’t think that would produce what we think of when we use the term “ice storm.” We’ll see, won’t we.
we prob won’t get that cold in Southern KY
there will be a couple of more systems throuhgout the week with more ice and snow potential.
WHEW!! I’m glad I got off here whenI did last night…that sure wasn’t too purty…lol! I mean, I’ll admit it- I sure was mad as all get-out to see the snow flying here, then it took a shift to my east and that was all she wrote for Bardstown..but then I see where a lot of you were just like me and didn’t see any either, while the next town over was inudated w/it??! All in all, tho, I’m happy that at least some of us got snow, that everyone’s calmed down now, and we can all look forward to the next in line!
BTW-my aunt in OK (just soouth of Tulsa) is expecting a high of 70° Sunday, with falling temps down into the teens w/ an ice storm by Monday morning…she told me their guy out there says it’s’ expected to move this way…I want snow, but am so starved for anything wintry, I’ll take it! I’ll just have to be reminded to pick up the sammy meat and chips so I won’t starve to death for 3 days like in Dec 04…lol!:)
Oh,yea…I forgot…
NICE pix, everyone!!:D
I’m glad us Southern KY people dun have to worry bout the ICE your Northern KY folks can keep that. 🙂
light snow falling in gunchester.
30 degrees.
folks the odds are eventually a storm and snow will shift east instead of west. just sayin dont lay down on MONDAY nite a tuesday anywhere in state.
CB people around town starting to dig in, so watch for even more traffic as people start tuning in to THE REAL FORCAST when weather approches.
LOVE ALL U ALL.
tonite music I can bring her back, by ken mellons.
playing some poker online tonite will be hanging arounf though.
Ok folks a little birdie told me that if we wanted to complain about the NWS we should email them and i totally agree with this advice and this will keep Chris’s blog less hostile. This is the address for the Jackson NWS representative thomas.johnstone@noaa.gov
Fire away guys
getting some snow flurries and showers all the way down here to. nothing heavy enough to accumulate though.
…………
talk about snow, Barbourville had around 1″ or so in the down town area, and Im elevated 10 miles out of town and didnt get that much…lol..boy I sure was on the tail end of that snow last night. I guess I should be glad I got what I did ..lol..THOSE PICS WERE AWESOME.. I was noticing the MNTS. down here earlier with snow hanging in the pines looks nice.
There is also a customer service satisfaction survey here. http://www.weather.gov/survey/web-survey.php?code=hqweb
man both mountain teams lose title games today.
BELL CO. goes tomm hopefully ole D HILTON gets it done.
such a shame what happen to those kids last week as well..
I’ve had many complaints with the NWS over the years. Not that they don’t get it right, but instead just because they won’t admit it when they don’t. If they do they and most media weather centers won’t to start talking about how they got it right and were right on top of the situation. Just have the guts to say I missed it. Everyone yes even you make mistakes and it is expected to an extent with predicting weather. However, all together now say I was wrong. Wasn’t that easy. Now in the NWS defense they really started having problems nailing local weather several years ago when they eliminated several of their offices. I would have thought with new technology it wouldn’t have mattered all that much but apparently I was wrong. It seems that the NWS has been slow to give good coverage to their new area’s and since the closer of Huntington it seems that neither Charleston nor Jackson want’s to cover NE KY and SW WV. Now let’s move ahead and enjoy a great winter no matter what is predicted.
Andy Rose, I just filled out my survey
and TACTFULLY let them know how I feel.
There’s nothing like a close encounter
with a guardrail at a 200 ft. cliff to
make you aware that it’s icy outside!
thank-you
Neil……….
You’re right! I know those maps may change, but if that snowfall map is correct…..ARE U KIDDING ME!!!
Santa must have put me back on the nice list Snowny has come back to life with a little help from my wonderful husband. Chris i wish i could get my pictures to go it is beauiful here….
Awwwwwwwwww Rolo!!!
We all love you too!!
my inner weenie wishcast is telling me lex gets hammered next tuesday, i am more desperate than a carl on auquateen, i’ll do anything for snow but if CB says models are underestimating cold air then dang it i think so too, i know i know i am a weenie, this blog is affecting me academically. i am going to tell professors on tuesday to delay finals so i can take precipitation measurements, hopefully in the form of powpow. this weenie was knocked off his horse from the last storm but is riding high again….there is a THREAT!!!!!!!!
let the model madness begin, starting with tonights 0z runs i will be glued to the latest runs now through monday. btw anyone think it’d be cool to start a weenie club? i know i sound nerdy and i am i love weather, i’d love to be a real pro someday but i suck in science
:(, for now math major is workin ok, but i really do want to move from weenie to pro at some point lol, wishcasting is going on like crazy over at the eastern us weather forums lol
I agree Rolo is the man Patty. How has your day gone and are you off weekends????
The weather in S. Lex (behind the Mall) is all ice. I have been hearing ice pelts hitting the windows. I checked outside and everything has started to ice over. Looks to be a mess tonight.
