Good Sunday morning everyone. I promised you a wintry weekend and old man winter delivered with snow, arctic air and wind. There are so many things I want to get to tonight. But, it has been a long day so I don’t have the energy to do it all. Not only do I want to talk about our Saturday snows… I also want to take a look ahead to a wild week of weather.

Let me start out by talking about the clipper snow. I mentioned in a post early last week that I had seen situations like this overachieve in the past. This one did just that putting down  anywhere from a coating in the south and southwest to nearly 2 inches where I am in northeastern Kentucky.

The unfortunate thing about the snow is that it seem to catch so many people off guard. Roads were snow and ice covered for much of Saturday causing hundreds of accidents across the state. That included one that claimed the lives of 4 teenagers. As always… say a little prayer for their families in their time of need.

Road crews are on record as saying they were told to expect nothing more than a passing snow shower or sprinkles. My question is… told by whom? Folks… I cannot stress enough the importance of where you get your forecast from. While no one forecast or organization is responsible for any one accident… giving people a “heads up” on dangerous travel should be a no brainer in this business.

I had actually written a whole lot more about this whole subject and decided to delete it before I entered this blog. I have said my piece over and over on the subject matter and nothing has changed. I will have more on all this at a later date.

Let’s get to the weather…

Snow showers and flurries will quickly end on this Sunday. Arctic air will continue to surge in with temps in the upper teens when you wake up. Highs today will only reach the mid to upper 20s with wind chills several degrees lower than that.

Our Storm early next week is going to be moving right over you heads on Tuesday. Warm air advection will kick in for Monday and we may actually have a light mix try to develop… especially in the north. Temps will warm toward the low 40s by late in the day.

Here is what our Tuesday looks like…

That is a stout low across western Tennessee with one heck of a moisture supply. Temps will surge into the 50s as southwesterly winds really crank! Rain will be increasing as the day goes by and will become heavy Tuesday night…

Rain amounts of 1″-2″ will be possible into early Wednesday. MUCH colder air moves in by the second half of Wednesday changing the rain over to snow as temps fall below freezing. Snow showers will then be possible Wednesday night.

By Thursday… another low pressure develops across Georgia. Here is what the European model looks like for Thursday morning…

Thursday Morning

That is a classic eastern US winter storm in the making. The GFS has it as well but is a bit to the east of the Euro. By Friday morning… our fast moving storm is in New England as arctic air floods in…

Friday Morning

As is… the models are a bit too far east to give us much in the way of synoptic snows from this low. They do show good snow shower and squall potential during this time, though. The one thing I will be watching for closely in the next few days is to see if the models come farther west with this low as they have done with almost every storm for the past several years. Interesting to say the least!

I will update things as usual later today so be sure to check back. Until then… take care.
