Good afternoon everyone! Snow developed fairly quickly across much of central and eastern Kentucky on this Saturday and will continue into the evening hours. We are already getting reports of a coating to half inch amounts in a few spots. Roads are VERY slick in many areas. The cold temps of the past few days are the reason for the snow having no problem sticking to pavement.
Track the snows with this radar…
Here is my updated call for snowfall…
Here are a few cams for you…

This is yet another case of some forecasts getting smoked by the actual weather. I see the NWS offices still not getting a grasp of the slick travel that is developing. I will say it over and over… just because you did not forecast it does not mean it’s not happening. Crazy assertions have been made in recent days that we would be dealing with RAIN today and not snow because temps would be well above freezing. It would say it amazes me… but we have seen some of the same forecasters make the same mistakes over and over. Oh well…
I will update things a little later in the day so check back with us. Take care and stay safe.

In a little lull here like i figured some snow in southern indy looks like it will swing around here into north central ky and bring us some more light to moderate snow for a time.
Thanks Chris…snow is falling here in Isom (Letcher County)…not yet sticking.
Parents just gave me a call, they’re on their way to Lexington via I-75 and said they’ve passed about a half dozen wrecks. Clays Ferry Bridge is white in 2 of 3 lines and traffic is going across at less than 10 miles per hour. Be careful if you are out traveling today folks.
Chris, Is the blog still having issues with moderating comments?
just re enter ur post it go thru,
no snow in manchester as it looks like i 64 north is were most of precip is.
CRYSTAL its called dry air, virga as I know u have heard before.
someone posted in last thread saying london got a coating, u might want to call ur RENTERS back and see what they are smoking.
some heavier snow flurries headed to lexigton in an hour or two across louisville area about 1/4 here car wrecks EVERYWHERE
someone in other thread say SIGNIFCANT SNOWFALL,LOL
it nothing more than scattered coating,
its THE STUPID PEOPLE THAT CANT DRIVE causing wrecks.
other media outlets said u might want to watch the roads as they might be some slick spots out.
what u want them to do call a NATIONAL EMERGENCY OVER A FEW FLKURRIES AND snow showers.
lol,
back to the roads, CELL PHONES, blue tooth and not having any patience is reason for all the wrecks in fayette county.
ohh and a few drunks and dope heads thrown in as well.

Thanks for posting the whole thing 🙂
FREEZING RAIN NOW MIXING IN WITH SNOW IN PARTS OF THE REGION.
Mountain Parkway in Salyersville is closed because of multiple accidents.
nothing here in somerset as always. we had a brief period of snowshowers that were real light. We didn’t even get a coating
yep its pouring the snow at turfway park right now,
once again no matter how much or how little us SE ku and south ky folks always on da sidline.
snow has been sticking for awhile up here in nky, temp at 30…around an inch of snow up in northern ky…still coming down…
Temp already up to 37* here in Somerset…we should make it above 40 down here with ease
Snowing in Pikeville picking up a little then previous. Thanks Shane and Rolo for answering my questions.Rolo what is the song for today???
Flurries. Why are we so excited about flurries? No snow in Pikeville.

Wife & I left for Huntington Mall at 10 AM from Paintsville on 23. Clear until the Power Plant, then snow covered roads, but not too bad. Spent an hour at the Mall & headed back. Very treacherous driving. Took 2 & 1/2 hours to get back (usually only takes an hour & 15)& saw 2 wrecks in front of us. Just glad to get back safe & sound.
Very slick in west liberty. My husband almost hit a car in the back because we could not get stop and belive me he knows how to drive in it its just that slick people.
that’s the secondary low. some of the models have it even further west.
well looks like CHRIS BAILEY IS HOGGIN ALL THE SNOW UP THERE IN ASHLAND!!..lol.. or at least according to the radar..some inhancement over the ashland area…
………………….
10pm. last night 15*
6 am. this morning cloudy and 20*
8 am. cloudy, hard freezing ground with frost. (snow on radar)
11:45 am. snow started falling, a very light dusting on frozen surfaces.
1 pm. snow stops completely, skies become partly cloudy.
3 pm. just cloudy, with a temp. @ 35*
and no freezing rain in this area at all thank goodness!!!
this is fairly typical weather for a clipper system in this part of the state. UNLESS you get a clipper on steroids.. then we can get accumulations.
Unless KY is involved i could care less about storm elsewhere
Nothing at all down here on the line…Tim..looks like we have missed out on this one 😀 Oh well..on to the next chance! 🙂
Sighhhhh….I feel like Linus in “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!” Waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting….but never giving up.
Well here in my neck of the woods off 119 we have a little better than half an inch. The roads got VERY bad here in a short period of time. I heard that there has been at least 1 fatality due to the weather. My heart and prayers go out to the family.
vinny race 2 was a dog, my billy goat could have out run it.

ITS TIME NOW FOR: GFS SNOWFALL MAPS GONE WILD!!!!
……………………………
Today on gfs gone wild, we continue our saga of snowstorms, and rumors of snowstorms, just a couple of days ago the gfs snowfall charts were showing shoveling snows for all of ky. during the time frame of lets say, the 12th thru the 17th. WEll today brings a whole new change in the ball game. AS USUAL for us the storm has decide to cut to the lakes bringing a mostly rain event for ky. on Tue. the 9th. with the usual change to snow on the backside with snowshowers into wednesday…..NOW..where things start to get interesting YET AGAIN on “gone wild” is the fact another storm develops on the tail end of the front moving through on Tue. which at THIS TIME is forecasted to move north along the coast of the eastern seaboard. SO lets hope this storm moves farther west on the next set of runs since this is the usual scenario for the gfs. I mean remember just 2 days ago the Tuesday system was running up the app. mnts. now forecasted to run up thru. the lakes. So “gone wild” is forecasting a swath of snow on the 12th and 13th to run from southern alabama northeast through Atlanta Ga. where its spitting out a 2-4″ snowfall on the 13th. WHICH in turn COMPLETELY MISSES KY. AGAIN…SO to recap the moral of the story on “gone wild” today is. Snowstorm Tuesday for the missouri valley, RAIN FOR KY. then on Friday and Saturday, snowstorm for deep south MAYBE FLURRIES FOR SOUTHERN KY……THE SNOW DOME LIVES FOLKS!!!!…
So stay tuned for tomorrows exciting episode of ” THE GFS GONE WILD” !!!!!!
…………………………..
I think we need to feed the gfs models to Rolo’s billygoat..LOL..LOL…
Looks like another band of snow moving through central and north eastern ky. looks like a good dustings worth. ENJOY!!:)
yea tim its dang depression.
but that what xanax is for!! and hopefully a kentucky BB win…
Hmm, 18z GFS is showing that 2nd low develop in the northern Gulf of Mexico and is taking it up the coast off shore of the Atlantic. If the old westward trend kicks in over the next couple of runs that could be something to watch for the end of next week. At least it looks the GFS is starting to realize if you develop that strong a 2nd low it’s going to have to pull cold air into it.
O.K !! those updated pics of the horse park is making me jealous…we dont have any snow…:(
…………………..
Shane…. I agree..its like I said,..the gfs gone wild..lol..:)
From the NWS IN JACKSON:
Icy Roads and Some Additional Light Snow Tonight
Some additional snow showers moving across the area this evening and tonight will result in a dusting to locally a half inch of snow accumulation. In addition, any remaining water on roadways will freeze, creating dangerous travel conditions.
Hmmm!! it appears maybe, just maybe alittle snow is backbuilding into central ky. moving east south east… Maybe we’ll all get in on some more hyper flurries..lol. and snow showers.
alot of snow shower activity moving through east ky.. stay safe on the roads gang, because that is apparently where everyone is…I believe I’ve been talking to myself on here for hrs. now…lol..lol..
Go big blue!!!!!!!!!!
earlier today, we were headed into town, getting ready to go down Dry Creek hill to Morehead, and I’ll be…the salt truck couldn’t get UP the hill to lay salt so we could not go down the hill. we were stuck on the hill until our truck started sliding down on the ice. WHEW!!! very scary. I had to defrag my computer this morning so I couldn’t check the site. I was under the impression that it wasn’t to bad. I’m done with the NWS for good.
Well Chris nailed this forecast we had exactly less than an inch at my place
Hello Marilee been a while since you posted on here
It was snowing during our Christmas parade tonight. It made for a beautiful and festive time! Mitch were you there?? From the look of the Radar another batch may come through later tonight! What fun!!
yes patty i made it, a low turnout and no k-state still santa coming down main.st was a nice sight.
We had a few snow bursts during the Old Fashioned Christmas in Wilmore – very Norman Rockwell!
Hey Guys!!
I was reading in the accuweather.com and Frank Strait was saying that said that the models has our storm back. Is that true? I cant read them so I have no idea.
getting some snow flurries down here along the border, so I know someone to my north east is getting some good snowshowers…
yea tim got a few over her in gunchester,
I am still trying to figure out why it too BILLY G till halftime to figure out YOU HAVE TO ATTACK A ZONE to WIN.
once we did we dominated but was just to far back, used yo much energy.
I am excited though about this team,
Yes Mitch..There seems to be something magical about seeing Santa coming down the street even at my age. I was disappoined in K-state not being there! It just wasn’t the same without them!
http://204.2.104.196/gfs/CONUS_GFS0P5_SFC_ACCUM-SNOW_120HR.gif
Same garbage as last yr snow in MS and GA while we can’t buy enough to cover the ground
YEah thats what I was talking about earlier in “GFS gone wild”..lol…
snowdome city…but thats a good place for the gfs to start because maybe by the time it happens it will have done its usual westward shift to e.ky.
I am always full of surprises. 🙂 How’s the weather down your way? It is snowing again here. We did make it to Pineville tonight but I had my better half drive me. The roads were just wet but it has dropped below freezing so I would imagine they are getting tricky again. It was wild up here around dinner time. BAD, BAD roads!
Nothing here all day maybe some flurries but thats about it
You lucky ducks, or should I say penguins out in eastern kentucky are getting some nice snow showers tonight, I wouldnt be suprised if someone dont report in with close to an 1″ somewhere. I have been on the tail end of it all day..lol..looks like on a line from cincy to lex. down through Jackson, clay eastern knox and bell counties eastward will have at least some snow on the ground in the morning.. me? well here in east whitley co. We have managed to squeeeeeeze out a light snow shower or two in the past couple of hours…but nothing to write home about..mainly flurries.
Micah… I will have to check that one out.
It was horrible up here. I heard that there was a 4 person fatality on 25E in the city limits. My heart and prayers go out to the families.
We already have close to an inch on the ground here off 119. The snow is pouring again so I can’t wait to see what morning brings.
Everyone stay safe and warm tonight where ever you are! 🙂
Consider yourself lucky to see some snowshowers Tim. We’ve had nothing..and I mean nothing here in Pulaski Co. This is the true SNOWDOME capital of KY. If you hate the snow then move to Somerset. Tourism Commission should be advertising this to bring more people in here. I guess the lake has something to do with NO SNOW falling around here… I need to move back to London..atleast I got to see some upslope flow snowshowers over there… This is terrible
At 17:30 EST we had an inch in northern Lawrence County. It has been snowing off and on all evening. It looks like we’ve picked up another half inch at least. LET IT SNOW!
everyone enjoy this cold snap while it lasts… I think we’ll see a trough dig in the west by the middle of this month meaning that the eastern half of the US will warm up… I think we’ll see that pattern for a while…. When will we ever see a true winter around here again?
Giving up to early. Remember this is early December and it has already beaten most of the past few years.
WOW…Marilee, I could tell by radar you all were getting snow but I had no idea you had that much…your lucky, I noticed every batch that did move through kind of enhanced when it hit bell county..along with harlan, letcher and others up the pike…I just barely missed out on it looks like..oh well maybe next time..(got my fingers crossed for the wed-friday storm giving southern ky at least some snow..):)
Guys!! What are the models saying tonight?
Michael…I would MOVE!..lol.. I have noticed that as well Pulaski co. is out of range when the upslope kicks in…and anymore thats about all the snow we can look forward to…lol..
Well we went ahead to Lexington today and it was really bad!! I actually saw cars stopped in the middle of the interstate!! I almost hit one of them!I knew if I stopped I wouldn’t get up the hill in my car. I never saw the roads getted salted there. Interestingly, I also saw 4 firetrucks at Rack Rooms Shoes in Hamburg shortly followed by many more. I don’t know exactly what was going on but I informed Wkyt so Lex wouldn’t get the info first!! Take that 18!! Anyway thanks Chris and thank God I made it home!!
0z run of the nam showing a rain event, not as strong as the Gfs,which is showing a full fledged storm with probably severe weather to go along with it possibly into western ky. and tn. with a wind/heavy rain event here on tue. with snow on backside tue.night and wed. blah, blah, blah,…we all know the routine by now.. Chris will feel us in fully tonight I would say..
Has anyone else heard anything about the State of Kentucky cutting the OT for the road crews and instead giving them comp. time? I heard this today and it was said that the crews were not answering their phones when called because they were angry over losing the OT.
Tim,
I am only 3 miles from the Harlan line so we usually do get a little more than Pineville. The snow has stopped again for now and it looks like it could be over for awhile. We will have to see what morning brings. My son lives in Rockholds and he didn’t get much either.
MARILEE….SMALL WORLD, thats the area I live in…actually about 4miles from Rockholds, but my mailing address is Rockholds…I’m about 1.5 miles from the knox/whitley line right off state rd.779…Whats his name? if you don’t mind me asking I might know him
Well 0z gfs still showing the peidmont of south carolina and northern Ga. getting a snowstorm on thurs. & Friday. I DONT BUY IT… the gfs is famous for being to far east with its storm tracks all winter so far…SO 6 days out and a storm going off the coast or riding the coast could mean a snow event up the appalachains when it finally gets here. OR I COULD BE RIGHT FOR THE FIRST TIME!!…that would stink…snow to our north on Tuesday and snow to our south on thursday…talk about sour grapes that would be SOUR, now would’nt it??
You sat tomato i say tomato lol
Good work! Your post is an excellent example of why I keep comming back to read your excellent quality content that is forever updated. Thank you!
