Good Saturday morning everyone. I will be keeping this post rather short since I have to be at a WSAZ Breakfast With Santa event at 7 this morning. Plus… I will be updating several other times today as well. ![]()
Temps late Friday evening tanked courtesy of the arctic air that is in place. Most areas saw temps hit the mid and upper teens before midnight. Those numbers will level off as clouds move in but this will mean we have yet another day with teens! I cannot stress to you how impressive this cold has been for the past 4 weeks. Much of the area is already 8 degrees below normal for December and that will fall even more this weekend.
Our clipper is working quickly toward the area on this Saturday. With this modified arctic air in place… we have very low dewpoints in place so we are likely to see the radar lighting up with snow without seeing much actually falling from the sky for a while. Here is a radar to track the flakes…
This will be a fast moving system and there is basically NO warm air advection ahead of it, thus not much moisture with it. As mentioned… the initial stuff will be helping to saturate the atmosphere. Here is my last call for “LIGHT” snowfall…
Temps will hang out in the low 30s for much of the afternoon. Winds will gust up along the front with some snow showers kicking in for a time in a strong northwesterly flow. Temps when you wake up Sunday may very well be in the upper teens and only reach the mid to upper 20s for highs. Gusty winds will make it feel even colder than that.
A couple of notes on next week…
1. Watch for the chance for some overrunning light wintry weather on Monday.
2. The Tuesday storm is looking more like heavy rain than anything right now.
3. Cold air should quickly move in Tuesday night and Wednesday with a shot of snow possible.
4. A second low will form toward the Gulf of Mexico by later Wednesday and Thursday and will need to be watched closely.
5. None of this is even close to being written in stone… I am just telling what it looks like at this moment in time. It will all likely change with my next update! ![]()
Updates when needed through the day. Have a great Saturday everyone and take care.

Crystal i was thinking the same thing they are having snowstorms all around us has the weather change over the last 1o years just for ky?
Florida has a better chances at a snowstorm than ky…..

congrats to a great coach heading back to the title game, DUDLEY HILTON of bell co.
Thanks Chris…tell Santa to bring a white Christmas. 🙂
Thanks Chris….just keep waiting on the snow. The radar looks like it is pouring over the entire state….no such luck! Figures.
Snow falling in Berea. Almost looks and sounds like sleet. My driveway has a thin coat of the white stuff.
A burst of snow just hit downtown Lexington. The bridges have been treated, but not the rest of the road and it is sticking.
Extrememly fine snow coming down now in Lexington at 9 a.m.
New to posting but have followed this blog for years. Really fine snow here in Woodford Co too.
nothing on the Rowan/Carter line yet.
Roads in Lexington are becoming very slick…
Be careful out there this morning folks…
You might want to be careful if you get out….Lexington roads are covered now with a white powder!!!! It happened VERY quick.
What side of town do you live on Vinney?
Welcome catfan…..That makes three of us (at least) that post on the blog. The snow is really really fine, but I bet the brighter blues on the radar have bigger flakes. You think?
NW side…
Masterson Station
Snowing pretty good at my house in Morehead. Already have a coating on the ground… Still coming down…
Hey thanks for the updates Chris! Hey we are planning on going to Lexington today. Does anyone know about the road conditions?
WE have clouds, 24, and I see some very light snow starting to fall here in Somerset now. Flakes are notr very big, but it is still very pretty coming down.
Chris, I think we are going to have to take out a HIT on the dome, so we can get ourselves a good snowstorm in here!
Our Christmas parade is this morning, so the snow should serve to help all the Scrooges get into the holiday spirit!
Wow! It is pouring now, Still small, but pretty all the same. Makes me want to go home and turn on the Christmas lights right now! (Working this morning…ugh! But grateful that I have a job to go to. 😉 )
Well everyone have a great day, and Chris, I hope you enjoyed your breakfast with Santa. Please ask him for that Christmas snow, ok?
Gotta end it with this….GO BIG BLUE! And stay warm, everyone!
The roads in downtown Lexington are snow covered and very slick with snow coming down at a pretty good clip. The salt trucks have still not come out. They must have watched 18 like I did. The girl this morning said it wasn’t reaching the ground and wouldn’t till afternoon…10 minutes later the roads were white. We really need Chris back in Lexington.
this clipper is overacheving by quite a bit thsi morning a nice coating already in versailles roads are covered as well.
its really slick here in lee co also.. within 20 mins everything is covered roads and all… hope everyone has safe travels is they have to get out.
snow flakes are about the size of salt grains here in Pulaski Co. WE have more accumulation from frost than from snow.
If we can get that band moving through Indianapolis right now we could pick up a good little snowfall. I called all of this last night but my comment never showed up I don’t know if this one will either.
we can never get the jet streams to phase togther,
this next storm prime example, cant get the cold air drawed in without a phase in of the 2.
no snow in in my area, just drove down from lexington.
I live off Clays Mill. So we have both ends covered…so to speak ha!
Pretty healthy snow falling here in Lansdowne. Tates Creek Road is covered and people are driving very cautiously. From the looks of the radar, it may taper off for a bit, but then snow for the rest of the day. Overachieving clipper, YOU BETCHA!
.25 inches of snow here at my house in LEX with one last good little band coming through. I think there will be a little lull with some flurries and snow showers until a band of moderate snow in southern indiana swings on through giving us another .25-.50 inches of snow!!
Got give props to Chris for his call on this clipper. Just got a call from my rents down in London and said they’ve already got a dusting on the ground. I also have to say the GFS has had a pretty solid handle on this system for the last 2 or 3 days. I know sometimes it’s not the best model but it seems to be handling this clipper better than the NAM.
Welcome Catfan.Light snow falling in Pikeville 24 degrees.
Pam you have all the luck.I am moving to Moorehead lol!!!! Party at Pam’s this evening.
By the looks of the radar you would think we would be getting pounded right now not just light snow? what gives with that??????? Thoughts Chris Mitch Rolo Wxman anyone? Tim are you getting in on the snow?
Hi Folks;
Know what irks me?
CB let us know this snow was coming in the wee hours of Friday morning. No other media outlet was talking about any “significant” accumulation. Here in Northern Morgan Co the snow is pouring, the salt trucks are out,Oh well…..
People around here that don’t visit this blog call me or ask my wife whats the weather really going to be like? Thanks Chris, that we can tell them.
I still think it’s a shame that people without computers can’t get a decent forecast….excuse me while I get off my soap box…

Crystal, the accuweather radar at the top of the page uses shades of blue to show snow. Those shades tend to blend together real easy and can be a bit deceiving. If you look at the radar sites on the NWS pages they don’t color their radars for precip type, they just show the raw DBZ values like normal. If you look at them right now you’ll see the heaviest snow is up around Morehead up to Portsmouth, OH. A 2nd heavier batch of precip is down in the Pineville, Middlesboro, Harlan areas.
One other thing to remember is snow doesn’t show up as strong on radar since the flakes are so small and not as dense as raindrops.
Kudos to Chris forecasting the clipper!!
Well its kind of sad. Cold dense DRY air + clipper moving south = snow falling on radar for HOURS without making it to the ground here in southern ky. Now around 11:45 am. snow did start falling and its roughly 12:30 pm now and its still snowing with a light dusting on the ground. but most of the precip is just about out of my part of the state now. if all of it had reached the ground we may have had a good inch of snow.
……………………………
Now sad to say if we dont get a good snow before the 15th. it may be a winter like the last 10 or so. Some indications are that a trough digs into the west which means what goes down must come up.. so you get a eastern ridge.JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY!!! :(… Will we be able to grill a holiday turkey outside for Christmas… Who knows! maybe we’ll get a big snowstorm out of this kind of set up storms like to follow the battle grounds between hot and cold…our problem is we’re always on the wrong side of the fence to get the good stuff..lol..
save the snow for christmas from now til christmas lets all be 34 degree rains and accept it, as long as we have some snow on christmas i dont care how many chilly rains we get!!! CB is the man btw for callin the powpow while others called for half an inch to an inch of “partly cloudy”
