Good Sunday to one and all. I hope each of you are in the middle of a wonderful weekend. My weekend has been wrapped around the Kentucky Wildcats. The football team laid an egg down in Knoxville and word has it, now former Tennessee coach, Phil Fulmer was seen trying to eat it as he was ushered quickly out of town!
The basketball Cats proved they will be a team that can make some serious noise this season! GO BIG BLUE!!!! That win last night saved my sports weekend!!!!
Enough sports… to the weather we go.
Our low pressure is developing quickly on this Sunday and will be moving right on top of us. This means rain and wind will be with us on this Sunday. I am seeing enough dry air at the surface as of this writing that the leading edge of the precip could be mixed with a little sleet or a wet flake before quickly going over to rain.
You can track the precipitation here…![]()
Temps today will be in the low 40s in most areas. Once the low goes by this evening… winds will become westerly and temps will begin to drop. As I have mentioned… there is not a whole lot of cold air to work with behind this storm. Wet snows will develop from west to east Sunday night as temps flirt with the freezing mark.
Monday Morning
Monday Evening
Temps for Monday will be holding steady in the low to mid 30s. Wet snow will continue across the entire region with a rain drop trying it’s best to mix in. A slushy accumulation will be possible with the heavier bands of snows. This will be a windy day too so visibilities will be reduced.
Temps will crash into the 20s pretty quickly Monday evening and this is when roads could get slick as widespread snow showers continue. A good inch or two will be very possible across central and eastern Kentucky by Tuesday morning. Both the NAM and GFS are showing our accumulations…
NAM SNOWFALL
Don’t look at any individual point on the map and say I am getting X amount of snow. I am ONLY showing that map to get across a general point. I would actually expect parts of southeastern Kentucky to get a little more than what I am talking about… especially once the northwesterly winds kick in Monday night. ![]()
Temps Tuesday will be cold with upper 20s to low 30s for highs.
Our arctic front will be making some serious headway toward us by later Wednesday. It is moving so quickly that temps may not recover very much ahead of it. Low pressure is likely to develop along the front as it is surging through here and this will likely enhance the precipitation for late Wednesday into the first part of Thursday. Here is how the GFS is seeing it…
Wednesday Evening
Wednesday Night
Thursday Morning
Notice how quickly the cold air (blue lines) catches up to the precipitation. That would be a rain to snow situation and the GFS is putting down a couple of inches of snow Wednesday night and Thursday morning across the state. This is an arctic front so the above depiction is very possible. Now… if we can somehow get that low along the front to deepen a little farther to the east! ![]()
That is the coldest air of the season coming in for the end of the week into the weekend. Temps in the 20s for highs will be likely for at least a few days. I see the computer based numbers are coming in colder with each run… I love it when an evil plan comes together! haha
It continues to look like a very wintry pattern across the country setting up over the next few weeks. One loaded with snow and cold potential and you will see the models dancing about in the coming days with each individual storm. The first one will be coming next weekend… that is unless this Wednesday night storm tries to overachieve!
I will update later today and hope to have a video forecast for you. Have a great Sunday and take care!

A steady, nasty rain here in west Mercer Co. this AM and temps mid-40’s. Boy, if it was just colder we’d be getting a good snow right now. Maybe later……
Morning Chris and all! We have had some pretty heavy rains here this morning. OUr temp is 45 at present. Glad to hear the b-ball Cats came through. I went to bed an halftime when they were down by 10. (No, not giving up, just tired. 😉 )
Anyway, looks like it is going to be in interesting few days around here for sure! Looking forward to the next update! Everyone have a good day!
Things definitely look promising -at this point- to see some snow this week. I’m dreaming of a white birthday (it’s Tuesday). 🙂
thanks chris for the update. kids expect to go to school with snow shrs holding off till mon am.
Could someone direct me to where I can see guidelines of what each color means on the NAM in regards to precipitation?
Chris, for some reason I cannot get the Wednesday evening, Wednesday night and Thursday morning GFS to load up. Can you re-post those sometime today??
Happy Birthday Chasity!! Glad to hear from you!
light pink- coating to an inch
pink 1-2
light blue 2-3
yellow 3-4
light green 4-5

Thank you very much!
I guess that goes for teachers as well…
Hi Chris–I hate that you left Lex. but I still love you–when I read your comments on here, are you still speaking
from a Lex. viewpoint?
i think his statements have always been central and eastern not just 1 like some people’s view points
The mountains of SWVA and NE TN are going under Winter Weather Advisories….

The NWS at Jackson is not giving any accumulation for the Corbin/London area. Is this correct or will we be in on the inch or so. I just wonder because my son has a basketball game tommorrow night and I don’t want to be caught unaware. I’m just a little confused on what is expected in southern KY.
Consider the source
In Chris we Trust
The dry slot appears to have set up further west than previously though. What does this mean for the forecast. As far as your Bball game i expect roads to be slick i think the temps are suppose to be in the 20s if i recall.
Well, it appears we are going to miss out once again. At least according to the NWS as far as SC and SE KY are concerned. Chris, should we say bah, humbug to the NWS?? I guess I’ll be skeptical again about snow chances until I see a storm actually materialize. Thanks for your work Chris!
The jeopardy theme song is going through my head as I wait for CB to give us an updated forecast. My wee one is still holding out hope for an extended break from school.
I just got back from my Mother-in-law’s house in Kokomo, IN, and there was plenty of snow there today. This morning between 5 and 8 am, they had 3-4″ fall. I woke up at 5 and looked out the window and there was no snow at all, then woke back up at 8 and there was quite a bit with all the roads in pretty bad shape. I don’t think they were expecting quite that much snow.
Here’s hoping our turn comes soon, but it doesn’t look too promising with this particular system…
Local update…there is a good rain/sleet mix coming down right now. Our porch temp. gauge is reading 35.8 degrees.
folks dusting at best, maybe little more in letcher county with the upslope.
look towards the next system if u want snow, even if we get some snow it want lay, too wet and stilll a tad to warm.
Thanks Andy. I was worried about the road becoming slick. I typically don’t worry, but I live up a really steep hill and am worried about driving my boys. Anyway, thanks again for answering. By the way, I’m with ya, Chris is definately the way to go.
I was wanting the snow to fall…but it has been too warm all day. Would have been perfect if it was colder. It rained all day in Lexington. Just think that could have been snow if it was colder…we will just sit back and dream, I guess.
Wonder when Chris will do his next update? Can’t wait to hear what he has to say next
Well I’ve held out hope as long as I can. The cold truth of the matter is that the Majority of KY is going to see less than 2 inches of snow. I believe that by Tuesday evening the majority of the state should see a dusting to an inch, with the mountains seeing up to two inches. Oh well Let’s see how this system for the middle of the week plays out.
Hi, mate! I’m utterly acclaim that way of assumption and everything connected.
