Good Sunday folks! All I can say about the weather this November is WOW! The amount of cold over the past few weeks has really been incredible and our Saturday morning took the cake in terms of our deep freeze as some areas actually hit single digits.
Check out some of the low temps from across the state from Saturday morning…
West Liberty 9
Sandy Hook 9
Mount Sterling 10
Booneville 12
Salyersville 12
Covington 12
Frankfort 13
Ashland 13
London 13
Lexington 14
Wow is literally all I can say. I told you I would be looking to see if we could get a 10 degree temp out of all this and we actually got some single digits. This was done without a snow pack in place and without a TRUE arctic air mass. Since I still had some snow on the shaded sides of the hills at my house… some other areas probably did as well. But… you get the picture and it’s a bitterly cold one.
Bitterly cold in November? Yep… it’s all relative to normal my friends.
Let’s take Lexington for instance. The 14 degree low on Saturday is the coldest temp so early in the season since 1964! The coldest early season temperature in 44 years! Again… This is HUGE weather news. Since 1970… only 3 other November’s featured colder temps than the recent 14. Those were 2005… 1976 and 1970 and those temps came near the last few days of the month.
One would think this would get the NWS folks to issue some cool climatology facts about this cold spell. Guess that daily hot air balloon forecast for Louisville takes up too much precious time. ![]()
We had talked about our Saturday being another cold one in terms of highs and indeed it was. Most areas stayed in the low 30s for highs blowing away those 40 degree + highs from some other folks. The clouds were with us most of the day and we even had a radar snowstorm showing up! The radar was the only place the snow was showing up. ![]()
All this brings us to where we are now… Sunday. This will likely be the warmest day of the upcoming week and MAYBE the next few weeks. Highs today will warm all the way up into the toasty… 40s! This is still below the normal highs of low to mid 50s. Might be a good day to put up those Christmas lights before the BIG cold begins settling in the coming days.
Speaking of Christmas lights… it looks like the Griswold’s around the Bailey house right now. If I see cousin Eddie emptying his RV waste into my storm drain… I know I have succeeded! ![]()

Such a classic scene from Christmas Vacation! I wish I could put the quote from that scene on here… but this is a family blog! ![]()
Ok… let’s talk weather before I get side tracked again.
Everything remains on pace for the week ahead weather so I really don’t have a whole lot to add. Rain will be moving into the state before daybreak Monday. Temps may be just cold enough for a little bit of sleet to move in and this will be something to watch for.
GFS Precip Type Monday Morning
Rain will be THE precip for for Monday as temps warm into the lower 40s in most areas. Rain could be locally heavy at times with many areas picking up more than a half inch. Winds will pick up during the afternoon and evening as our cold front moves through. Any leftover showers Monday evening will mix with some snow showers…
Monday Evening
Most of the deeper moisture will be off to our east by this time so it should not be a big deal. That may change by Tuesday morning as a fairly strong disturbance swings southeastward across the state. You can see that nicely on this map… just look for the X over Kentucky…
Here is the end result for Tuesday morning…
Snow showers and even some snow squalls should be crossing the state. Temps by this time will be at or below freezing so we could be talking about light accumulations across central and eastern Kentucky. Again… I will fine tune this as we get closer but it is really something to keep an eye on.
Upslope snow showers and flurries will kick in later Tuesday and continue into Wednesday… mainly across eastern Kentucky and some of these can add a coating here or there… maybe more if you are lucky.
Tuesday Evening
Wednesday Morning
Areas to the north and east of the Ohio River will likely see some significant snows… especially into the mountains where more than a foot of snow will fall. This is going to make for some big time travel troubles across the eastern half of the country. Highs Tuesday and Wednesday will be in the 30s around here with lows down into the 20s.
Thanksgiving looks cold with highs near 40 and lows in the lower 20s with a few clouds increasing in the afternoon ahead of a system that rolls in for Friday into next weekend. This one looks interesting as it should take a track to our south and may bring a wide variety of precip to the Ohio Valley… including right here! ![]()
After that… the REALLY cold stuff begins to move into the country and once into the first week of December… much of the country should be heading into the ice box. This ice box pattern may also be a stormy pattern!
I will update again later this evening so make sure you check back. Until then… take care.

“HEY CLARK, WHILE YOUR NOT DOING ANYTHING CONSTRUCTIVE WHY DON’T YOU GO AND GET MY STOGGIE!” I love that movie… We’ve already had more snow and cold than we had just about all winter here in Pulaski County.. atleast it seems that way… looking forward for more!
ohh same ole same ole, good moisture system warms up just enough for rain.
temps cold enough its a clipper or up slope.
sorry folksd but it the truth.
Go figure! When there is enough moisture to bring down some snow worth really talking about, it has to be warm enough to bring a half inch of rain. As far as I’m concerned, they can keep that!
I agree, Rolo, with what you say.
Crystal I with you girl we all need to be very thankful to Chris and is wonderful family that let’s him devote so much time to his bloggers. Crystal you and all the bloggers on here are like family and I am also thankful to you all.
