Good Friday everyone and welcome to winter and the weekend! We started ringing the bells about an early start to winter way back in September and here we are talking about the second snowfall of the week and we aren’t even to Thanksgiving yet. As of this writing… your friendly weather dude has seen snow falling from the sky on 5 days already. Not too bad. ![]()
Our Thursday evening snowfall turned into a photogenic one across the bluegrass state. Here is a taste of some of the pics from the faithful bloggers…
Wayne from Jeffersonville
Renee’ from Lexington gets us in the Christmas spirit with this pic…
Crystal from Pikeville
Jason from Harlan
Tommy from Lexington… anytime my man! ![]()

Thanks to all those who sent in pics. If you guys can make them as small as possible… the blog would surely appreciate it. ![]()
Snow showers really increased across the state late Thursday and those will continue into the first half of our Friday… especially in the east. I have about an inch at my house near Ashland and driving home after work… I hit one of the heaviest snow showers I have seen in a long time. It was basically a whiteout!
I love it.
Here was the snow call we put out Thursday and it looks like a good one…
I would not be surprised to see a 3″ amount somewhere down there! I am sure we will have a few happy teachers and school kids today getting a rare November snow day.
This is a pattern that is throwing some forecasters for a loop as it is biased toward going cold and snowy. I have seen some horrendous forecasts this week but me ranting about them does no good as nothing seems to change. You know… I hate when I miss a forecast (and I have missed my share
)… but I have pride and care about the work i put out to the public and try to get it right the next time. This isn’t just a job for me… I love what I do and I hope it shows.
Like I said… I am sooooo tempted to rant. But they don’t care so why bother. ![]()
Let’s get to the weather.
Snow showers will wind down early on this Friday across eastern Ky. We will likely keep a few flurries flying well into the afternoon hours. Highs today will stay in the low 30s across much of the region. Some areas in the east may not hit 30. Brrrr. Winds will be very gusty as well creating wind chills down in the low 20s at times.
We will clear the skies out Tonight into early Saturday and this will lead to another VERY cold night. Temps will be in the teens across the entire region. The coldest valley’s that retain any snow cover can make a run toward 10 degrees.
A weak system will be dying out as it moves into the state Saturday. Clouds will increase and we can easily see some flurries later Saturday with highs staying in the 30s.
Sunday looks to be the warmest day of the next week with temps likely hitting the 40s for highs. That is still below normal for this time of year.
The next system will be rolling in quickly Monday as a cold front moves into the region as low pressure heads into the lakes. This likely means a cold rain for Monday with temps around 40 for highs. Here is what the GFS is showing for Monday…
While that looks like it could produce snow… temps should be just warm enough for the cold rain. Much colder air will wrap in quickly Monday evening with rain changing to snow showers Monday night and carrying over into Tuesday…
That is another situation where we could put some snow on the ground across this area. This is taking us into the busy Thanksgiving travel period so any bad weather is bad news for those heading over the river and through the woods to grandma’s house. ![]()
A big storm could be in the cards for Thanksgiving weekend and this is something to really keep any eye on given the pattern we are in. Take EVERY model run with a grain of salt for the end of next week and beyond. They will have trouble with the details of a pattern that is heading toward possible extreme winter weather over the next few weeks. ![]()
I will do some video forecasts over the weekend and will be updating as usual. Winter forecast comes out next week… but that looks like it’s late since winter started last week! ![]()
Have a great Friday and take care.

GM All. 27 here this morning, feels much colder. There is still a little snow left here and there, like Tim said, I guess the warm Nov. ground ate some of it. My 6 yr old daughter HAD to go out and play in it last night about 7:30. I let her go as this is only one of the few snow showers she has ever seen. I only wish I hadn’t dropped my camera last week and broke it 🙁 WTG Chris on another wonderful forecast, Thanks!!!

That chart right there would equate to 14 degrees. Brr. In all the flip-flopping that the GFS is doing, one thing is consistent….we are going to see COLD air rule in the Ohio Valley for a long while. Bundle up…
Hey Chris who needs other forecaster we have you you do a great jobs we are very lucky we have you. Got a little over a inch here in morgan co. And yes its beauiful out there this morning we also had a snow day.
Roads are clear and snow is melting on the grass near the sidewalks in Lexington. Still very cold however. Car temp said 23 degrees.
Hi guys 25 in Pikeville with light snow falling and wind a blowing lol!!!!!!! We have about an inch just like Chris said but the wind wants to take it away as Tim says eat hit lol.It is beautiful esp in the mountains. Thanks Chris for all you do,you are the best.Chris or guys how do you make the pictures smaller,I guess it takes awhile for the blog to download tell me how and i will do it don’t want to overload our blog.Again Chris thank you. Renee your pic has put me in the christmas spirit beautiful!!!!!!!
Right on target Chris.
Corbin got its fair share of snow last night and I loved it. It was pouring of snow and I checked weatherbug and the NWS on my iphone and the forecast said partly cloudy for Thursday night.
What a JOKE! Of course, you guys already knew that.
MAN been a rough nite,
I just went outside and measured the snow here in Williamson while i was cleaning my car off and it was a little over 2in.
Thanks for the update, Chris! And for the pics from everyone else! We got a pretty good coating here in Somerset; at least at my house. About half an inch, I would wager. I really enjoyed seeing the snow falling. Seems like it is so quiet and peaceful when it falls. Puts me in the Christmas mood. Thank goodness it is almost time to get the tree out of storage and get it up!;)
The remodelling project is FINALLY all but done. Two more door facings, and caulking the baseboards is about it! That should be finished today, with any luck. And then we can finally get a Saturday off at home! Looking forward to that!
Chris, what do you see for the Thanksgiving Holiday period? Other than cold temps. Other outlets are talking about a warmup for Wednesday and Thursday. Looking forward to the next update! Everybody have a GREAT weekend!
*** SNOWFALL TOTALS FROM THE NWS ***

total was 0.6” here in western fayette county. i am headed to lawrenceburg, in to watch snow making begin and camp in the parking lot!!! CB’s blog is killin me academically everyday my study habits get worse 🙁 jk snow is so darn distracting i could never go to college in a really snowy place i’d never get any work done. thanks for the pic CB!!!!
I have a robust .75 inches of fluffy snow on my deck… Slow down old man winter, not so much so fast!!! lol
reports around the web are, “lookout, we are getting ready to go into a very cold December around these parts” Let’s just hope we can get some snow out of it…
Vinny I hope you are right, this one here isn’t as promising.
http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2008/20081120_winteroutlook.html
but of course that is NOAA lol. 🙂
About 2 inches in Northern Perry County this morning on the ole’ picnic table.. Of course most of it has already melted away.
I must say that was about the sneakiest 2 inches of snow I can ever remember.
Seems nobody has anything good to say about those folks lol
Are you kiddin me Chris?! You HOPE it shows that you love what you do??? If anyone can’t see that, they simply aren’t paying attention. Thanks for everything!!
Tommy…what are you going to Lawrenceburg for? I might bump into you. 🙂
If history repeats itself…what this weather means is that December is going to be mild and then January is going to be brutal.
Brutal in terms of cold or snow or both? Snow I hope!
I keep hearing a cold Dec. and warn jan.,Feb. BUT WHO KNOWS !!!…LOL…
THE WEATHER CHANNEL just reported that the coastal river inlet (Elizabeth City) North Carolina, received 2″ of snow today. There first snow since January 08. So this pattern were in is conducive of producing unusual weather for this time of the yr… those folks are lucky to see snow anytime of the yr. much less in Nov..!! and we thought it was something to see snow here this early…imagine those folks…lol..
even the gfs which flip-flops a lot has had brutle cold coming for days 11-15+. that cold should bering some more of the good stuff as well.
those outlooks are just useless. what does it mean 33% warmer than average and 66% below avg temps or 33% warm, 33% normal, 33% cold. several different ways to interpret that, or you could just be under ” ec” equal chance, which is as much as your avg joe would know before clicking on the forecast.
This is a possibility also. But the point is that we do not ever see a Winter season that is brutal for 4 consecutive months. There is almost always a fluctuation, so you’ll get a mild month or two in there somewhere. Look at 83-84. November was mild into December, then the end of December through January was horrible, then Feb. was mild.
When I signed on to the Internet today, there was a message about the Feds winter forecast, so I looked at it. According to them, we are going to have a milder than normal winter with little or no snow. I’m going with Chris’ forecast, I don’t really think the Feds are all that dedicated to their forecasting. Even the Farmers Almanac disagrees with them and says we are in for a bad winter.
I enjoyed the snow , it was beautiful. I’m going to get a camera so I can take pictures and share them too. Hello to Rolo, good to see you, and all the other wonderful weather bloggers!
Here’s to snow!
well since winter doesnt’ start for another month it is possible we could have some big snows between now and Dec 20 or 21st
Andy…are you playin hooky from work today? … :)…
I am with the rest of you all I think (those other guys) are thinking were not gonna have a winter at all…has anyone knocked on their office door..HELLO !!! is anyone home…its NOV. and temps in the 20’s and teens at night with snow on the ground ((( IN KENTUCKY )))) NOT MICHIGAN !!!!…..
NO WONDER NOONE HAS ANY CONFIDENCE IN THEM !!!…. AND HOW MUCH OF OUR TAX DOLLARS IS FUNDING THAT ORGANIZATION…
WEll we’re not the only ones railing on NOAA..LOL…here is Henry Margusity from ACCUWEATHER.
You Think It’s Cold Now…
PAST 24 HOURS HAVE BEEN INTERESTING TO SAY THE LEAST… THE NEXT SIX WEEKS WILL BE EVEN COLDER…
I was not trying to rip on the NOAA long range, but when you issue forecasts without any real detail, it’s hard not to be confused. In any case, we do know that the month of December in much of the East is going to be very cold. Even the models are now showing extremely cold weather for the first week of December. When I say extreme, I mean temps across the Great Lakes and Northeast in the Teens with the Major cities like DC to NYC in the low 30s. The question then becomes, can we get any snowstorms out of the cold pattern? The answer is Yes……….GOT YOUR ATTENTION??? IT GOT MINE..LOL
(part of Henry’s column as well)
next weekend could get interesting once again as the upper low that will come into California Monday will move across the country and eventually interact with the cold air mass sitting over the East. Remember the old saying “Where a storm comes in along the West Coast it will exit along the East Coast.” So if a storm comes into San Francisco, it will exit near Richmond, Va. using Richmond as a point of reference for the East.
…………………………………
THIS WOULD PUT KY. IN THE SNOW ZONE !!! at least at some point of the storm,if not all of it…
No i’m off Thursday Fri and Sunday
(part of Henry’s column as well )

This should put KY. in a favorable position to receive accumulating snows…HOPEFULLY !!!
Now Tim you may get spoke rudely to lol 😉
mild winter? its not even winter yet and we are already getting snow and very cold temps lol what do they know? apparently not much or at the least there not trying…. least we have the blog!
