Good Wednesday everyone and thanks for stopping by the blog. As hard as it is to believe… we have already had 3 brushes with frozen precipitation already this fall. We had the snow showers in late October… the spotty flurries Sunday evening… then we got in on some sleet Tuesday across parts of central and eastern Ky. That is usually doing good for an entire winter around here!
Just hang tight and we will throw several more brushes with winter your way before the month is over. ![]()
Before we jump into the winter talk… let’s focus on what should be a nice soaking rain over the next few days. I am VERY encouraged by what I am seeing with the pattern through Friday night. I highlighted last week the chance for us to see a nice stream of moisture moving northeast from the western gulf into the Ohio Valley and things look on track for this to happen.
We will see a plume of rain increasing from the southwest into Kentucky as our Wednesday progresses. The chance for some locally heavy rains will be with us later tonight into early Thursday… especially in the south and east. Their is a chance to hear a clap of Thunder during this time as well. Highs Wednesday will be mainly in the 50s to near 60.
As the rains move east Thursday… temps will warm toward 60 during the late afternoon. Winds will begin to pick up too as we await the arrival of a VERY potent cold front set to arrive on the scene Friday night.
Friday is an interesting day. I think we see some clearing ahead of the front and that could send temps soaring well into the 60s. Winds will be very gusty as well as afternoon showers begin to develop. The potential is there for some thunderstorms to develop along and ahead of our front. A weak wave of low pressure will try to develop along the boundary by Friday night and this will prolong our rains… especially in the east. Here is a look at what I am expecting for total rainfall over the next few days…
That would go a loooooooong way to help out with the drought!
The other big story with the front will be the cold air that will come pouring in behind it. Temps will likely be some 20-30 degrees colder from Friday afternoon into Saturday. Highs Saturday will come at midnight with afternoon temps holding in the upper 30s to near 40. Winds will be very gusty as well to go along with rain and snow showers that will be around.
Our northwesterly wind flow kicks into high gear Saturday night and early Sunday meaning snow showers and flurries should be fairly common. The chance is even there for a light “coating” in some areas… especially in the higher elevations.
Lows Sunday morning will fall below freezing meaning a slick spot will be possible on roads. Flurries will end during the day Sunday with temps likely staying in the 30s.
Here is the European model showing the depth of the cold moving into the region…
Saturday
Sunday
All in all… the weather this weekend will be more common for mid December than mid November!
The cold relaxes a bit for Monday as we await the next big cold front that will arrive Monday night and early Tuesday. Here again is our friend the European model…
Monday
Tuesday
Impressive to say the least and that is a flow that would produce another chance for some snow showers around here by Tuesday and Wednesday and will likely bring even colder temps than what we see over this coming weekend.
You will notice I am not showing the GFS model. It is a model that is going to be showing some wild swings with it’s runs over the next few days. We saw this with the “blizzard” run I was showing Yesterday. Overall… the model has the right idea about the cold coming in waves… but it is having some issues with the details and will continue to do so until it can get the flow across the Pacific ocean straight.
So there you have it. A nice rain coming up over the next few days to be followed by a wintry weekend. That wintry pattern takes hold for the rest of November. What does that mean for us? Well… it’s only November my friends so ANYTHING wintry we get right now is nothing more than a bonus! ![]()
Have a great Wednesday and take care.

Not to shift the attention away from us (and not that it has any consequence on us,) but some very hefty rainfall totals are a good bet across eastern Texas and Western Louisiana through the early morning hours. Some places there could pick up at least 2-3 inches of rain in a span of 3 to 4 hours.
Big picture, this storm is really scattered out but is encompassing a huge portion of the country, all the way from North Dakota to Texas to Pennsylvania. Nothing overly powerful by any means, but it sure makes the radar light up like a Christmas tree!
Chris, I agree with your post tonight, but my obsession with snow makes me crazy for it sometimes. Tonight I’m going to bite my tongue, because I think I have a hunch as to what you’re trying to say in the most polite way possible. ๐
=Aaron=
Hey Chris! I’m looking forward to whatever mother Nature brings.
Chelle……I posted this on the last thread, but in case you didn’t check here is the snowflake link!

Thanks Patty, have a great day! ๐
Thanks Chris for the update…When was the last time it snowed during a UK football game?
Some pretty ferocious looking shots of cold air coming down the road for this time of year. I definitely see snowflakes flying here off/on for the rest of the month. One of these years we’ll put an end to our snowless Winters.
Hey Chris and everyone! I havent posted in a while, but been reading. I just wanted to jump in and say hello.
Loving the taste of winter, although frankly I wouldn’t mind enjoying a little bit more of fall before winter really sets in. I guess it is what it is, huh?
Having been to every UK home game since 1991, the last time that I can recall snow at a UK game was the UK/Cincinnati game in November, 1995. Heavy snow showers. Saturday night may be similar.
Wow! Chris! thanks for the update. WE have been in the middle of a remodeling and painting project at the house, and are ready to get the floor laid over the weekend! Looks like our timing was pretty good as far as the painting part has gone. Finished it last night!
Looking forward to what the winter brings, and as you said, any flakes we could get now are just a bonus! At this time of year, bonuses of ANY kind are a good thing! ๐
Have been reading, but not posting much, but rest assured, I am out here, faithfully reading the blog daily, and thanking you for doing it! Have a great day, everyone!
Still, rain gauge has barely registered anything the last two days… here in Perry County.. just a little drizzle and sprinkles every now and then. It’s been this way the better part of the last two years in southeast KY- the rain looks considerable as it comes in and then just falls apart over us.. The creek next to my house has been dry for two years, easily the most dry it has been in my lifetime.
it’s back!!! (12z run) don’t worry heatmizer the 18z run of the whacky gfs will have us in the 60’s.
negative nao showing up today which would support an east coast storm.
Yep, the gfs is showing the east coast storm again, with ky. in the snow-zone. but like you say. it could show 60’s and rain tomorrow…
Chelle……I have the elf yourself link still too if you want that one. They won’t start it up though for a few more days.
Hey java Joe…..glad to hear from you!
Chris…”coating”???? Come on…just say dusting…you know you want to! Ha!
WEll that slug of rain moving north out of Tn. didnt give me anymore than sprinkles…:(…so I’m gonna have to wait for the next batch..
SNOWSTORM!!! SNOWSTORM!!!
IN NOVEMBER,
SNOWSTORM!!! SNOWSTORM!!!
ONE TO REMEMBER!
ONE DAY YES
ONE DAY NO
DOES THE GFS REALLY KNOW ????!!!
THE DAYS WILL COME
THE DAYS WILL GO
HOPEFULLY BY THE 21ST
WE’LL BE SHOVELING SNOW !! ๐ ๐ ๐
Nice poem there. I used to live in AR and I really like snow, so I want to see it asap. ๐ I hope that the forcasts turn into the snows favor.
Thx Patty. Everyone probably thought I had disappeared or forgotten about the ole blog, lol.
Chris, when are you going to put out your winter forecast?
Winter forecast should be on late next week or early Thanksgiving week. It will be in both video form and regular blog form. ๐

Very cute Tim! LOL!
Come on snow–I hope we get a nice snow this year. Chris, looking forward to that winter forcast.
Ok double poster ๐ did you get my emails i sent you ?
Glad the blog is picking back up. I will have to start back on again too. I have been checking it at school and I am not suppose to blog there. When the snow startes flying though I will be home blogging away. I hope we get snow Saturday and not rain as I will be in Campbellsville at their last game. I have been waiting for a game to be played in cold weather, so I am looking forward to bundling up.
Sorry about a double post, but I forgot to thank Tim for his winter poem. May I use it with my students?
extended nam( dgex) shows a similar system as the 12z gfs, jma has a strong clipper with a snow threat next week.
hey pat……….I hope all is well with you and your family!
Pat… I would be honored..you can use anything I write, This ole country boy dont have any copyrights to anything..LOL…except a HUGE SNOWSHOVEL I NEVER GET TO USE…LOL..LOL….
CHRIS said winter forecast will be out soon!!! and the icing on the cake will be a VIDEO to go along with it..we’ve been waiting on this since day 1 of the blog..lol…..I’ll be waiting im-patiently..lol..
I wonder if he’ll be using the studio equipment…cameras, mics, the green screen…etc??
Yep, but don’t get used to it. After that system…looks like we’ll blowtorch toward the end of the month with a re-load of cold air coming in around the first week of December (according to the Euro ensembles). That fast pacific jet is not going to allow big cold waves to stay around here very long.
Heck yea lol those were TOO funny. We’ll have to share them lol
Chelle…..Here ya go! It’ll be ready in 3 days. They are so funny! I never had so much fun last year! I think this was another one that you shared last year too!
