Good Thursday everyone and welcome to a milder pattern! This pattern will take hold of the state later today and keep it for about a week before BIG changes come our way. This nice weather pattern means we are going to have some very pleasant weather for Halloween and Election Day so we really can’t complain about that.
We are coming out of a very wintry period for the end of October. It is one that brought the first flakes of the season to much of the state. EVEN LEXINGTON SAW FLAKES NWS!!!! The highest elevations along the Virginia border picked up a couple of inches. Areas not too far from my new home picked up a whole lot more. The West Virginia mountains picked up 3″-6″ of snow. Here are a couple of viewer pics for you from the mountain state…

Not bad. Just think of how good the scene was in the northeast where more than a foot of snow fell! The early taste of winter isn’t limited to the US. London, England had it’s first October snow since 1934! Check it out…

That is some impressive stuff there!
It should also be noted that the cold temps across the eastern half of our great country have been just as impressive. The chill reached all the way into south Florida where frost was reported. Many cities recorded their all time record low temps for the month of October. Some of the records that were broken down there came from some of the analog years I am playing with for the upcoming winter.
Havana, Cuba hit 50 for a low temp if that tells you how cold this air mass really was!
So… let’s talk about the current mild spell. Temps today will head into the lower 60s in most areas after a cold start. Trick or treaters this evening will be out with temps falling through the 50s. Halloween itself will be mild with temps well into the 60s under sunny skies.
The weekend will see a weak front that will move toward the region. It won’t have a big impact as we only see the smallest chance for a shower. Small!!! Highs won’t move very much with 60s likely.
We will make a run at 70 from Monday through Wednesday of next week meaning Election Day weather should be awesome.
The changes begin by Thursday and Friday of next week as a nice sized storm takes shape in the plains states…

The pattern beyond this is one that can give us an early start to winter for our region! Do you like your turkey cold? ![]()
Take care and have a great Thursday.
PS… I am still giving a grace period to the NWS to get the Monday snow report for Lexington. Tick tock tick tock tick tock….

Thank you Chris! Those pictures are beautiful! I’m not sure I’m ready for that just yet as much as I do love snow! I guess I’m just not ready to give up the Autumn season. The leaves that are left on trees are just now getting those vibrant oranges, yellows and reds. It seems we haven’t had much of that season anyway. It feels like we jumped straight from summer to winter. 80’s one week and 40’s the next!
Thanks Chris for the update and the beautiful pics.
Other than a glancing blow from a trough around November 7, the GFS basically points to very boring and somewhat mild weather here through the first 15 days of the month. Sigh…
So the NWS still hasn’t added a trace of snowfall to the record at LEX? I haven’t checked. Are you serious?
I worked under the State Climatologist for a while…maybe I’ll ask him what he thinks about it.
I can’t believe your surprised.
The NWS in Jackson Recorded the trace of snow. Thumbs up Jackson your 1-up on Louisville..lol..
……………………
Those snow pics really gets you in the mood for winter weather no better looking scenery than pine tree’s covered in heavy wet snow…BEE-U-TEE-FUL !!! to say the least..
………………………….
Speaking of early season cold WORLD WIDE and I think jacksonville,Fl. set an all time record low for the month of OCT. (I THINK)… anyways my point is has anyone seen or heard from Al Gore and his Global warming buddies?? Hmmmm.. he must be trying to purchase a tropical island so he can stay warm this winter…LOL…LOL…YES !! I just had to go there…but its the truth, all this early season cold doesnt get the media attention, BUT, BUT, this week when the highs in the upper plains soars to above normal temperatures for a couple of days…They’ll come swarming out of their Hives like those bee’s that attacked me back in the summer..OUCH!! It will be something like: blah, blah, blah today temperatures in so,and so town reached 10* above normal, a definite sign of global warming..gag,gag,gag,…BUT A RECORD LOW IN JACKSONVILLE FL. in OCT.a week before hand IS JUST A FREAK ACCIDENT!!!… (ahhhh its good to be back in full motion I feel 100% better now..lol…)
……………………
I just checked the stats on that Low in Jack, Fl. here it is
Wednesday October 29,2008
Jack. set record low of 33* at 6:43 a.m.
old record was 39* in 1987
normal low is 55*
records go back to 1851 in Jack. fl.
……………….
I would pretty much say that is WAY BELOW normal for Jacksonville Fl. standards now would’nt you?
Hi all I have Halloween tonight in Pikeville also.Who else on the blog has Halloween tonight???? I so wish it would be on the day of Halloween the 31st grrrrrrrr my pet peeve lol. Thanks Chris for the beautiful pics now we know why you really moved lol!!!! Chris why doesn’t the NWS not want to report the snow for Lexington and those who got it??? Isn’t it a part of history? I just don’t get it maybe they slept threw it just kidding I think lol Well have to go and find my witch’s outfit to give out candy in I have never grew up lol!!!!!!!
CHRIS, I CALLED NWS/LMK AND TOLD THEM IT WAS SNOWING IN RICHMOND SOME GIRL ANSWERED AND SAID YES WE ARE GETTING REPORTS ALL OVER CENTRAL KY BUT IT WILL NOT STICK SO DONT BE WORRIED.
Cold weather does nothing for me if its sunny and boring and nothing going on!
I’m not really buying the GFS past the 10th or so the AO really tanks and the NAO goes negative so things should get interesting for the middle to late parts of nov.
the nws changed some of there winter products.

Wow they changed what they are gonna call weather advisories lol that is productive
Well, its a lot more productive than your gibberish comments of late.
Yeah, they have eliminated about 7 winter products to make things simple. This was also done to accommodate the media as many of them are posting graphics of the advisories. There was real confusion when adjoining office would issue a winter weather advisory while the other would issue a snow advisory…when both were warning of the same weather event.
I hate to call you out Andy, but you have been negative Nelly as of late 🙁
I think the consolidation is a GREAT idea…both me and Chris (not together, however, mind you) advocated for a change that would eliminate this type of confusion. I’m glad to see this decision, as it is easier for the mainstream media (mainly the TV viewers) have less confusion during winter storm events.

If someone who lives in the Lexington area could send in a pic of snowflakes flying, I could almost guarantee the NWS out of Louisville would have to admit the trace of snow that fell during that latest event. And I, personally, can vouch that sleet pellets hit my windshield on my drive towards Richmond for work. There’s absolutely no doubt in my mind.

wow i was gone and sounds like a cool post. i was in ny and missed this. i am confused bout the snow report
