I have added a new map toward the bottom that I think you will enjoy! Here is the rest of my original post…

Hello everyone! I am sure the headline of this blog post got you a little excited. Anything dealing with winter tends to do that to the faithful.   As a fan of winter weather, I am giddy at how the upcoming pattern looks into the first part of November. Not only because it is showing the potential for some early season “fun and games”… but for what it is showing me about the upcoming winter.

Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves right now and concentrate on what we have going on over the next few weeks.

We had a weak cold front move through the region earlier on our Tuesday. This brought a few clouds and even a sprinkle here or there. The big news is the re-enforcing shot of cold air. Highs Wednesday barely got to 60 in most areas. Mainly clear skies tonight will allow temps to head toward the freezing mark once again with 20s again likely in some spots. Don’t sweat the frost/freeze advisories… the folks at the NWS have done their jobs and our growing season is now finished anyway after the weekend.

Highs Wednesday will stay in the mid to upper 50s for much of the region. A low 60 is possible across the west. Temps will again head into the 30s Thursday morning but rebound nicely into the low and mid 60s for Thursday as a southwest wind kicks up. This is ahead of the low pressure we have been yapping about for the past several days. This will bring widespread rains to us by Friday into Saturday with many areas picking up 1″+. Not too bad folks!! Highs Friday will stay in the 50s as winds gust up as well. Saturday will likely be even colder as temps hang around 50 for highs with gusty winds and showers.

Once this low goes by… it is going to basically break the dam of cold air that is up in Canada and direct it toward us by Sunday into early next week.  This could open up all sorts of “interesting” possibilities. Take a look at a series of model maps for the Sunday through Tuesday time frame. These are from the GFS model and the European model…

European Tuesday

The blue is snow on that map!

Wow! Not only is the amount of cold pouring into the country impressive… but the agreement among those two models is as good as you will ever see.

It appears as if we get a “clipper” type system to roll southeast into the region Sunday. This would increase the winds and clouds and bring a shower to us later in the day. Highs may struggle to get out of the 40s. Monday and Tuesday will see the cold really digging in. IF the above models are correct… the flow is such we could be seeing some lake effect moisture reaching southward into our region meaning some rain showers or even… gulp… snow showers could be VERY close by or even on top of us. Highs Monday and Tuesday could REALLY struggle with low to mid 40s looking like a real possibility. Lows at night… even with clouds can reach into the 20s. If we clear the skies out… LOOK OUT… temps could tank.

Looking farther down the road… the cold should relax by the middle of next week. But… I am already seeing signs of another big cold shot by Halloween weekend into the first several days of November.

Ready for winter yet? Take care my friends.
