Good Thursday everyone. Well… my reunion tour of WKYT is over with and now it’s time to get back to my normal job in Huntington. The past few days have been amazing for me as I could have never imagined my coming back would cause such a stir with the KYT viewers. I am truly touched by the volume of e-mails and calls the station has received this week hoping I was back for good. While I am sure the majority of those people do not read this blog… I want to say thanks to each of them anyway.
My time back at WKYT was only 4 days but it was an emotional time for me getting to see old friends and being back at a place I have such fond memories of. My friends there are top notch and I love & miss them dearly.
Alright… enough of the sappy stuff. Let’s talk some weather.
A cold front is in the process of crossing the state today and will bring some scattered showers to much of the region. Here is a look at some radars to track the rains…
This isn’t going to be a soaking rain by any means.. but it can drop up to .25″ in some areas. This should be enough to help some with the forest fire situation but will be of no help to the drought.
The big news from all this is the cold air moving into the state. This is the beginning of a chilly pattern that will likely take us through the rest of October.
Highs today will top out in the mid and upper 60s as west to northwesterly winds pick up behind our front. The coldest air of the season will move in for Friday and Saturday. Highs Friday and Saturday will likely be in the upper 50s and low 60s. Some clouds will be around for our Friday… especially in the south. Saturday morning will feature temps in the upper 30s and low 40s. It is Sunday morning that we have a widespread frost threat for the entire region. Take a look at the GFS temp map for Sunday AM…
That would certainly suggest that some areas can dip close to the freezing mark. I am still wondering if some of the traditional cold spots in eastern Kentucky can hit the upper 20s. ![]()
Yet another fairly deep trough digs in for Monday night and Tuesday with another shot of chilly air.
GFS Monday Night
Tuesday Afternoon
A much deeper trough looks to try to dig in by the end of next week and this one has a shot at bringing some decent rains to the region…
Yet another shot of cold air will flow in behind this system. Sensing a trend here? I talked a few days ago about how I liked the fact we would see this current system moving across the region digging in and developing a storm across the east. To me… this is a sign the atmosphere is trying to tip it’s hand for the weeks to come on where the mean trough will be setting up. Take heart winter weather lovers as this could mean an early start to winter for the eastern half of the country. Wait… did I just throw out a winter hint? ![]()
Have a great Thursday everyone and take care!

Uhh…yes, Chris, you DID just throw out a hint! And yes, I think you’re right! How soon is up to mother nature..but I think it could definitely be within the next 6 to 8 weeks!
=Aaron=
It was so good to see you back and hate that your time at KYT is over again. I’m glad that we still have this blog to talk about the weather. Take care!
Thanks Chris……It was so good to see you on our TV screen this week. I guess all good things must come to an end just like this nice weather we’ve been having. I’m ready for this change though. It’s time for the weather to be the season that it is! Come on cool temps! Give us Autumn in all its glory!
Thank you Chris for the update…and the BIG winter hint.
I wish you were back at WKYT for good but it was so nice to see you again!
I had high hopes for rain today. My yard is a Dust Bowl. Maybe that quarter inch of precip will find my house.
YOUR WEATHER FORECASTS ARE THE BEST
get ready for the cold folks the NAO is taking a major nosedive. I’ve gotten wiser since our last frost threat and agree with chris, cover up those plants this weekend.
Chris,
It has been wonderful to tune into WKYT and see my favorite weatherman! I do hate to see you go. As you leave us, just know you are loved and appreciated alot. You bring sunshine everywhere you go. It is always great to see your smiling face. Until next time . . .
sounds like good high school football weather!!
Chris, it was GREAT to see you back, even for a few days! And I am loving your thoughts on the weather. After all, it IS October, and time for it to be cooling down. I agree with teacher Nate, its good football weather for high school, college, whatever! We havve some pretty colors in our leaves, but they are not as vibrant as they should be, due to the dry weather, and unseasonable warmth. But they are still pretty.
When are you going to bit the bullet and give us some more winter hints?
The biggest problem I am having with the weather is knowing how to dress! You should be wearing fall clothes, but its hard to when the temps are in the mid and upper 80s! Looks like that is about to change.
So, have we seen the last of the hot days for this year?
Well, gotta get back to work. Will check in later! Everyone have a good day, and here’s hoping that everybody gets at least a good shower!
Congrats Mitch now if only i could learn something 🙂
I read that the NAO has been negative all summer. I thought negative NAO meant stormy. I guess not here huh.
it’s been back and forth, the NAO is bigger player in the overall pattern during the fall and winter months than the summer.
Hey guys. You wanna see the craziest lighting strike? Go to youtube and type in the keywords section “crazy lightning strike”. It should be the very first vid that comes up. It is of a guy standing on a balcony video taping a storm looking out at sea! Warning. He uses a few choice words when the bolt hits!
So well put he is our sunshine. And i know there is a lot of sad folks tonight i know. I know I’m very sad no more WKYT I just can’t watch.
