Good evening to one and all. Rain is moving into the region tonight and hangs around into Friday. This leads us into a very active and wintry pattern that starts this weekend.
Low pressure works right on top of the state Saturday with heavy rain and wind. As that low passes by to our northeast, much colder air surges in with crashing Sunday temps. That will lead to a period of light snow with snow showers kicking in on a strong northwesterly wind flow…
Light accumulations are very possible Sunday as temps drop into the 20s. Winds are going to be super gusty and could send wind chills to near zero by Monday morning.
The next system is a true arctic front that arrives Tuesday. That should bring high winds and snows with it…
That’s a very potent system diving in here and should cause some issues. Another system may try to dive in behind that one a few days later. The Canadian likes both of those…
Looking down the road, we now see the blocking REALLY showing up on the forecast models over the next few weeks. This is 5 day average 500mb height anomaly…
The southern jet stream really cranks back up with blocking sending cold air into much of the country. That’s a good recipe for some big winter storms developing.
Sure enough, during that same time, we see the European Model advertising a storm system…
The European Ensembles during that time are also hinting at something…
The late afternoon GFS is all over the same time period…
Enjoy your evening and take care.
PC Master Race checking in for a belated upvote for BubbaG’s “WASD (Week Away Storm Disappointment)” phrase from the earlier post today. This is a keeper!
Christmas is over if we can’t get snow I really don’t want to see it that cold
Too bad cause we are getting it. Winter just isn’t for Christmas Day. I guess you can pretend it’s Christmas for the next few months cause winter is HERE.
John I was only saying my thoughts I love snow at christmas didn’t mean anything else I don’t need to pretend I was just saying I hate it being cold without snow I guess from now on I will just keep my thoughts to myself
Marsha…I left my Christmas lights up this year so I can try to get a good snow picture of the house with lights on it. I’m like you, snow for Christmas and snow if it’s going to be cold!
snow season is finally upon us.
it is time of the year for me to catch up with my fellow readers.
Yep…the prodigal daughter has returned for the season!!
“Down the road” “same time period” !! When is that time period supposed to be? Confused. Found no dates on maps. Help! Travel plans Jan 22 may need revising??
That snow system on the GFS is Jan. 17-18 approximately.
Thanks C in BG!
I’m patiently waiting! Eventually it will be worth waiting for …❄️❄️
Maybe we can top last year’s two big storms.
If that is the case, I will be looking at starting summer vacation in mid-June when school lets out…again!
Oh man I hope so! I am a snowbird transplant from beautiful snowy Michigan. Been here for 32 years and still miss the MI totals so bring it on!!! And Spencerlady, I get you on the late release time but a few snow days just so worth it, aren’t they!!!❄️❄️❄️ (Except when the kids are driving me bonkers by June 5th or so…!!)
MLK Day weekend looks fun! ❄️❄️
If that storm track could go a little more west…we be in the heavy snow 🙂
If I’m not mistaken they usually tend to track to the west over time don’t they?
Time to come out of lurking mode. Hi all! Any gardeners out there have any suggestions for my daffodils who were tricked by the warm December? I’ve got three and four inch stems shooting up already.
Yeah, cut down yo daffodils and plant you a rose bush.
