Good Monday to one and all. I hope you got to get out and enjoy the nice weekend weather we had across the state. It was a touch too warm for my taste… but I really can’t complain since we had that deep blue sky and some early fall colors.
Our new week is starting off a lot like our weekend ended but come BIG changes are on the way and those changes spell R-A-I-N for a lot of people before this week is over!
Yee haw!
Today and Tuesday will be warm again with temps in the high 70s to low 80s for highs. Today will feature some high clouds moving across the region. Tuesday will feature increasing clouds from west to east with rains already breaking out in Western Kentucky.
This rain is from a storm we have been talking about since the middle of last week and should be a good rain producer for the parched Bluegrass state. It is not a deep low pressure by any means… but it will be tapping into some juicy gulf of mexico air and that spells the threat for heavy rainfall! What? Heavy rains? Yup… especially on Wednesday when some thunderstorms could accompany the showers. All the models are on board the wet train for Wednesday and Thursday. Here is a look at the total Rainfall into Thursday morning…

GFS
Now they differ slightly on the exact placement and that is to be expected. But… the trend is for a widespread rainfall here in Kentucky with the potential for some areas to pick up 1-2″ or rain! ![]()
I don’t see any cold air behind this system but highs will be held into the 60s on the rain days. Temps will rebound into the 70s over the weekend as yet another system cranks up in the plains. I have been harping on our pattern getting very active toward the second week of October. I see nothing to change my mind as the storm for next week could be a big one in the southern plains that rolls northeastward into the region and could be loaded with moisture. Not only gulf moisture but from what could be left of a Pacific tropical system. Combine all that with a plunge of very cold air deep into the mid-section of the country and you could be looking at some wild weather across the country. Just in time for you to see me on WKYT again for a few days.
All of that is still a week or so away from us so we will have plenty of time to see how it all plays out.
I will update our rain chances coming later tonight so check back. Have a great Monday and take care my friends!

Thank Goodness we’re getting out of this DULL weather pattern!
Thanks Chris! The rain can’t come soon enough. I’m hoping that rain will help out those fires in the Red River Gorge before anymore acres have burned or any homes are threatened.
Thanks Chris for the update.
Chris, I can’t wait to have you back on WKYT and hear you forecast something other than “Sunny and Dry” day after day after day. T.G. could have recorded a forecast and taken a LONG vacation and nobody would have noticed. I’m all for a change in the pattern but don’t want any windy nastiness. Just bring on the rain and the cold!!! 🙂
So is all the smoke that is hanging around the bluegrass this morning coming from the gorge, or is there another fire in the area?
hopefully that is right chris I’m a bit worried about storms further south robbing the deep moisture and dry condtions already in place keeping down rain totals. thanks for the update.
I bet death valley gets more rain than we do at times. Hope you bring some excitment with you bailey cause the weather is boring.
Bet they don’t!
hey Chris,
it is going to be so good to see you back at kyt even for a short time, it just isn’t the same without you. thanks for the update on the rain, we really are as dry as death valley.
take care and see you soon
