Good Wednesday, folks. We’ve had a couple rounds of arctic temps over the past week, and I’m tracking another on the way for late this weekend. Between now and then, a storm system looks to bring some rain and snow to much of our region.
A weak system passes us by just to the north tonight. That may get just close enough to throw a few flurries into the north and northeast.
As this works through, temps rebound quickly for Thursday and could push 50 before all is said and done. This actually looks like a great day to get outside and enjoy, and I suggest you do just that. Why? Because another storm system rolls across the region with rain increasing for Friday.
As this low goes by, colder air comes in behind it…
Temps drop quickly from west to east Friday evening with a switch to some light snow. From there, snow showers may fill the air through Saturday as this storm turns into a monster off the northeast coast…
Some light accumulations will be possible with the Saturday snow showers.
The next blast of arctic cold arrives Sunday and should be accompanied by snow showers and squalls…
Temps behind this one look to be MUCH colder than what we currently have…
I will have another update or two later today. Make it a great day and take care.
Perspective:
Last year at this time, Lexington had a seasonal total of 1.6 inches of snow. So far, we’ve had 0.3 (less than an inch), so basically, at this point last year, we were nearly the same in terms of snowfall. Last year was sort of a joke of a winter up until this point as well. Blog was the same with comments last year at this time. Bring on spring, joke of a winter, I hate this place, I’m moving north, blah blah blah….
MarkLex, was it the last week of January that we got several inches of snow, then a week later another one?
Yes, MarkLex – I, too remember snow was a little “late” arriving last winter. The downtown Lexington business I work for closed 2 days last year due to snow, and both those days were in MARCH.
Math wise though, it is 5 times less 😉
We are back in business again! Under-performing events and snow chances dwindle the closer the outlooked’ systems gets.
It is what it is- Kentucky weather 🙂 The ingredients though are out there for us to get a thumping at some point this winter. No envy for mets forecasting though, since a pent up winter usually means wild dynamics with systems.
Good post, MarkLex.
We have had more this year, to this point, than last. The snow, although it did not stick long, did come down hard twice. And really put it down before moving out and letting the sun come out and melt. The road I live on is shaded a lot so there is a huge section that is mostly ice since it melted some then temps went below freezing.
As for what you are saying I have been hearing people say that since early December. And when/if the snow does hit I will hear a lot of “I was ready for spring” and stuff along those lines. And for as long as I have lived here December has not been a big snow month so not sure why it leads to so much disappointment.
North Korea?
Thanks Chris for update. Hopefully will get some snow on the ground with this next one. We didn’t get anything but a few showers yesterday. Have a great day!!!#
Sadly, that blast of wind and snow yesterday lasted for literally 5 minutes and didn’t result in even a coating really. It was loud, though, that’s for sure.
I don’t understand how anyone can say that at this point this winter and last winter are the same in any way. For starters, when people want snow, close to two inches is certainly a lot more than close to nothing. Secondly, the level of frustration was entirely different because we had the COLD air in place since the fall but we kept missing our chances time after time, even so far as busting when the system did materialize as expected to move through. This winter has been just a steam bath up until recently, so snow wasn’t even a possibility. Many of us haven’t seen anything come of the the two systems that were talked up but didn’t result in anything. Some of us did, though, so it’s not as universal a zilch as it was last winter.
Personally, I like looking at snow covered landscapes but I’m still over the huge snow shoveling bit. Do.Not.Want. As soon as we get enough snow to cover the ground completely, 1.5″ let’s say, then I’ll say it’s all good as I get what I want and I can just push broom that stuff out of the way. Easy!
I agree with you 100%. Up until mid Feb. last year, we had no snow. But we did have the cold and several missed opportunities. With that I mean big storm chances, not weak little clippers. Unless we get more sustained cold it is going to be very hard to keep snow on the ground unless it is a bigger storm. Because the back and forth from 25 to 50 won’t work.
7 degrees this morning in western Gallia County, Ohio near Rio Grande. Still no snow to speak of though. A little dusting and that’s it.
12 in Carrie of knott co this morning. Not a speck of snow on the ground
According to my phone reading outside in Hebron this morning it’s 9 here. We’ve got what I would estimate to be about slightly over an inch of snow cover on the ground up here. I’m ready for a bigger one-I want to see the snow plows have to come out!
By the way Hebron is in Boone County.
How much snow can we expect from the showers this weekend, I wonder? Anything significant for Eastern part of the state??
Thanks for all the updates, Chris. Your work is very much appreciated.
Seems our snows have been coming later and later in the season the last few years. I didn’t expect much from this last clipper. Not disappointed at all.
Thank you Chris, I wait excitedly for all the new updates. I do love snow! I have decided that I will be a happy person rather it’s snow or not. It just seems to make life easier.
As my papaw would have said ‘their gonna keep on talking about a snow till we get one’ …. 😉
Have a good day folks!
We had 4 inches on the ground near Summersville, West Virginia. The forecast low last night was 11F. Well, it was 10F by 11 pm. The temperature off the front porch this morning was a chilly 1F. Lovely sun and blue skies makes up for it 🙂
Thelma Lou & I are a little bit disappointed with winter so far, but the big difference from last year is that one year ago we were downright frustrated! It had been since 98′ that we’d had a good one so we were at the breaking point. Since we got a decent amount last year it has made this season much more bearable so far. I don’t expect much from the weekend system but going forward you just never know.
1998??? I’m not sure where your at but we have had decent snows since 98 not including last year.
new gfs 12Z model develops 2nd gulf storm Sunday/Monday and rides up ga/nc and then east coast, perfect track for southeastern/eastern KY snowstorm..this storm was on the model several days back… pattern is loaded with negative NAO and active southern jet..something to watch…be interesting to see EURO model…
Rodger will be happy with anything other than another “Great Lakes cutter” that warms us to 50 degrees with the “dusting on the backside.” Hoping your post all comes true! Rodger in Dodger!
OK, so it hasn’t been exactly the same as last winter in terms of sustained cold, but that does NOT matter! I mean, I remember SEVERAL times in the past where we had a steam bath of a winter up until Feb, and even up until March! Example, in western NC, 1993, nothing, nada, yawn boring winter with a little cold days and warm days here and there, then March 1993, 20 inches of a blizzard from he double hockey sticks. And in Feb 1998 when we had 18 inches in Lex, that winter was snowless up until then, I can’t remember if it was cold up until that point…..My point is, you can’t give up on winter until at least April, and I mean at LEAST……
I kind of enjoy the late February and March snows. We have some decent snows in that timeframe and I like that they don’t tend to lay around a long time. Backroad travel starts to become a pain in the butt when snows lay a long time and they start getting dirty looking within a few days anyway.
Yep..GFS coming in line what its cousin the para is showing..System looks to keep amping up with more precip with a NW trend..Euro is kind of trending that way with the last few runs but slowly..Euro needs to get totally on board today or tonight to make us all believers.
For what area please?
Meh..Looking at other models believe the GFS is own its own right now..We wait and see what DR No has to say..
Was 8 degrees when I left this morning. Actually felt good for some reason. Just hoping this is not one of those winters. No snow, some cold but mostly average to above. And then come February-March we get hit hard. Seems it is usually around the time I see many saying they are ready for spring. I even remember Bailey himself in such a mood. Was talking about how he was moving to spring mode but the weather was not cooperating. And we hit that snowy period that many were not wanting at that point.
I am just hoping that we can get some nice weekend snows with clear weekdays and not much school missed. That would be perfect.
Hoping for a good snow for snow deprived warren county. I am pretty confident that we will have at least one good “thumpin'” snow before spring comes…. in April. 🙂
Southern Indiana where I live received about 2 inches yesterday. We have had around 3 inches of snow so far this winter. Looking for a big snow! Thank you for all updates Chris. You are the best!!
