Good Friday, folks. Our nice weather was one and done, and now it’s back to some of the ugly stuff. That “ugly” includes rounds of showers rolling across the region today, and another big blast of arctic air later this weekend.
Today’s rain will increase from southwest to northeast rather quickly today. Some downpours will be possible across central Kentucky during the afternoon and early evening hours. That’s also when the best chance of rain reaches eastern parts of the state.
Track away…
Colder air works quickly in from west to east this evening into tonight. Some light snow showers and flurries will be possible during this time. Low-level moisture and a bit of a northwesterly wind flow will help keep some flurries and snow showers going into Saturday. Highs will be in the low and mid 30s.
Our arctic front then arrives late Sunday into Sunday night with a band of snow showers and gusty winds…
Some small accumulations will be possible during this time.
Before that front arrives, the GFS still has a storm across the southeast that throws a little light snow into southeastern Kentucky Saturday night and Sunday morning…
The European Model has something similar…
That setup is soooooo close!!
The real story is the cold coming in behind that front. Readings hit the single digits by Monday morning with the possibility of reaching zero if skies totally clear. Wind chill numbers during this time should be below zero.
Highs for Monday range from the mid teens in the north to the low 20s in the south. This should lead us into another single digit night with mainly clear skies.
The GFS is bringing a nasty winter weather maker in here Wednesday and Thursday…
The European Model has a weaker system producing light snow at the same time…
The European Model is holding on to too much energy out west and that’s a big flaw with the model. Until it resolves that, the GFS will be a better model with that particular feature.
I will update things later today. Make it a good one and take care.
I’m still hoping for the big one Chris, I feel it it my gut
“That setup is soooooo close!!”
You know the old saying…If Kentucky had $1 for every time we heard that line. lol
Imagine how cold it would be if we had a nice snow pack on the ground! Doesn’t sound like any of the models can be trusted…the Euro with too much energy & the gfs had the phantom storm showing for several runs a couple days ago. I think Thelma Lou & I will go dancing this weekend.
Not sure if it was a phantom storm as it is back on the maps were it started. South and East and it was never really suppose to effect much of Ky. I remember CB saying IF (big) it could phase and if the Northwest trend held true we could get a decent snow. However that IF did not happen, but at least the GFS was on to something a week out. Like the looks for next week.
Take models and maps with a grain of salt more than a few days out during the winter season, folks. Rodger is keeping his fingers crossed that a southern storm can get organized and bring the white fluff. Maybe next week! Rodger in Dodger
Is that ice for next Wednesday? Yikes!
Yep. Nasty = Ice. Let us hope the storm does NOT get it’s act together, since that would likely be the main theme of the system. A rip-off song of Queen’s Under Pressure.
GFS’ prediction for the Wed/Thurs/Fri storm doesn’t look quite as nasty as it did in CB’s update last night. Hopefully it’ll continue to moderate in GFS’ opinion…
Green/Purple/Blue: good
Pink/Magenta: bad
Hopefully all snow.
Probably a mix.
COLD with no snow, that’s a bummer..
I hate it when perfectly good cold gets wasted.
No ice though is a win 🙂
That is true. I only want snow.
I told my sister ( in Louisiana where its 55-60 degrees) that by Monday or even Wednesday we would have in KY all possible forms of precipitation: Rain, ice, snizzle, snow, fog….. that’s what makes it interesting!
Test
I REALLY would like to get excited about that system for Wed/Thurs of next week. Hoping it stays on the GFS and comes to life on the Euro and others over the course of the weekend. Thinking SNOW! 🙂
Moved just north of Cincinnati in August of 15′. I miss my home in Keavy but I am least where some snow falls. Still have soomeon the ground but not much. Thanks CB for all you do. Even from Hamilton, Ohio…..I watch closely to your post. Keep up the good work.
Winter is right on track. We really didn’t get any snow last year until Jan 23. Thursday should be our time
