Good Wednesday everyone and welcome to the month of October! Our September is now in the books and it was a dry and warm one. It’s funny though that the last day of the month decided to turn cooler after some decent rains. Basically a far cry from how the rest of the month went.
It is full steam ahead into October now and a chilly air mas that is with is to open the new month. This has been talked about for a while here on the blog so it is good to see it actually happening. Hey… we get one right every now and again!
Our Wednesday will see a weak system diving southeastward into the state on a stout northwesterly flow. This will create a lot of clouds and will likely produce a few showers… especially in the north. Here is what the GFS is showing for later today…
Wednesday Evening
Looks kind of like a winter setup, doesn’t it? Highs will top out in the 60-65 degree range in most areas and it will feel chillier than that with some gusty winds. Find those jackets because you will put them to use the next few days!!!
As this little system swings across us… a quick push of even cooler air will be moving in.
Thursday Morning
Friday morning is going to be a chilly one with temps hitting the upper 30s to low 40s. Our frost threat is still all about the effects from clouds and winds so that will be a game time decision!
Yet another VERY weak system will be diving in for later Friday and just might have enough for us to see an increase in clouds with just the smallest threat for some sprinkles or a light shower.
Friday Evening
Northwesterly flows like this have a lot of areas of “spin” embedded in them and those are tough to find and time and this one is no different. Highs Thursday through Friday will be in the 60s with a 70 possible Friday in some areas.
Saturday morning will likely be another chilly one for central and eastern Ky. This setup looks to me like it can produce a decent temp spread. Valley areas can see temps drop into the 30s with calm winds while other areas stay in the low 40s.
The weekend looks awesome with highs in the 70s and lows in the 40s.
Next week will see a plains system try to make a run at us by Tuesday or Wednesday. The medium range models are going to be struggling in the coming weeks with the pattern I see setting up.
Speaking of the coming weeks. Since we are now into October… winter talk will begin to kicking into a higher gear here on the blog. I don’t think too many of you will be complaining about that.
Take care.

Thanks Chris! I love that the weather has finally decided to cool down and give us our Ky autumn. There is simply no other state as beautiful as ours in the fall! Of course I’m fairly bias in that statement! LOL!
I can’t wait for all the winter talk and speculations! It makes the season so much more fun!
I don’t like winter, but I like the speculation as well Patty. It makes life interesting as a teacher.
I am excited about the winter weather talk, but my more immediate concern is the SEVERE drought that south central and south eastern KY is experiencing right now. Fire danger is extemely high right now and many fires have already been burning in Pulaski Co. We need rain terribly bad. I think the last appreciable rain we had was about 5 weeks ago.
Thanks Chris…I love autumn weather, but I would love to see rain to end this drought.
it is really dry , but i dont think we are in a drought. i had to dig up a big slate rock out of my backyard, up on the bank, and the ground was moist down in the ground. not real moist, but they was moisture.
