Good evening, gang. We have a lot of winter on the way to the region over the next week. Bitterly cold temps are ready to blow into the region and that will be followed by some pretty good snow chances for the upcoming week.
We have some light snow that will brush southeastern Kentucky overnight into Sunday morning. Light accumulations will be possible and that could create some slick travel. The best chance is across the Virginia border counties.
Elsewhere, some light flakes or freezing drizzle will be noted. A light glaze on elevated surfaces will be possible.
The arctic front then sweeps in Sunday evening with some snow showers and high winds. Bitterly cold temps follow that for Monday and Tuesday. This has been well discussed for more than a week now.
The system following that by Tuesday night and Wednesday is looking formidable on the forecast models. This is looking more and more like the first widespread snowfall of the winter. The European Model shows the snows working in…
The GFS is more amped up with this system…
The snowfall forecast from that model run…
The latest trend on the models is to keep that system more in tact all the way through the region. If that trend continues, the better the chance for a decent snowfall.
A storm comes in behind that by Friday and into the weekend. This is likely to be a slow-mover, and if we stay on the cold side, could be a biggie.
The European Ensembles Mean shows the snows from west to east across Kentucky…
That’s an average of 51 members.
The European Ensembles control run has this…
That keeps the storm to our south and east, but its 6 days away. Don’t take any model solution to heart!
For fun, let’s expand that same run of the Euro Control out another week…
Yowza!
Who knows if any of these systems will actually pay off in terms of snow. But, we certainly have a lot of things to track. Don’t be surprised if this coming week produces our first WST of the season. 😉
Your tracking toys for the rest of the evening…
A full update later tonight. Enjoy the evening and take care.
Thanks CB! Hope we can get some snow this coming week!
Thanks Chris! Looking forward to this week!
The way the Cats are playing this season, CB posts are good therapy 🙂
If they produced snow, but talking about it doesn’t make it happen.
Yeah but talking about it is fun Oscar
I’ll take 12 inches of snow with a side of 0 or below for 5 days after. Thanks.
Amen!
Totally agree!
I like the way u think
I feel several Snow Days are coming!!!Thanks for update Chris. I hope this winter storm brings several of inches to all of Kentucky. Looking forward to sledding with kids.
Thanks Chris, I know you will nail the snow chances ✌️
Thanks for the updates CB! Things are definitely looking interesting for us next week!!! Dreaming of multiple snow storms!!!
Hope you are seeing something that the Charleston NWS isn’t. They have nothing at all week except a 30% of rain on Friday. But they are notoriously late to the party
Mr Bailey is ALWAYS ahead of the NWS to sniff out snow and trends. Rodger pays little attention to the NWS until they finally get on board and issue Watches and/or Warnings. Hoping for some BINGO! snows this week! This is Roger in Dodger
I would say the blog is going to be getting several more hits than normal this coming week! Looking forward to all of CB’s future updates. It could get a whole lot of fun around here if we can get BOTH systems to produce appreciable snows across the state!
I love the positive looking models for snow. It’s fun to look a number of days ahead of time, and dream of snow even if things don’t end up with the big hit. It’s disappointing to get hopes up and have it not pan out, but it’s fun to have expectations.
If I had a dollar for every time I’ve been dissapointed with a week away storm, last weeks powerball would look like chump change.
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! It’s been warmer than normal this season thus far. I am more than ready for some snow! Bring it on. I’m even excited about the flurries forecasted for tomorrow here in Central Virginia! Will keep fingers crossed; and eyes on the forecast. Usually what happens in KY happens in Virginia. Will it cross the mountains and come into central Virginia is the question.
Hope we get some big snows in the near future. Bots!!
Thanks Chris. I smell a busy weather week ahead. Hoping to see some snow in there for everyone. But i will take the wait and see attitude. I can guarantee the blog will sustain a boatload of hits though! Stay tuned, it’s gonna get interesting! Have a great rest of the evening and stay warm!
Woohoo! Love checking in before bed and seeing a colorful GFS snowfall map!
