Good Tuedsay to one and all and thanks for stopping by to blog with us! It looks like Mother nature is going to be taking a long little nap. This means the weather around here is going to be very quiet for the next week or maybe a little longer.
That’s not good for blogging… but I am sure we will find something to talk about. Hmmmm… maybe we can talk about the fall and winter ahead? I am sure you will be all over that!!! ![]()
A few words on where the pattern is right now. Here is a water vapor map with the fronts on it…
The big dome of high pressure across the plains is the main player and will continue to be for the rest of the week and into the weekend. The low pressure across the Carolinas is a weak one and will only throw up a few sprinkles or showers across southeastern Ky the next few days. Even there… spotty is the word.
Temps will run normal to below for the rest of the week before we start to crank em up a bit by the weekend. Highs Tuesday and Wednesday will hit the middle 70s with a mix of sun and clouds. Lows Wednedsay and Thursday mornings can hit the high 40s in many areas.
By the weekend… temps will be hitting the low 80s in most areas as our dry weather continues. This is not a good sign as we are entering what is typically the driest period of the year around here. Could be a bad forest fire season just ahead of us if we don’t get some big time rains soon.
We will get cranking on some fall and winter maps this week and I will be letting you in on some BIG news in a few days. No… there isn’t going to be another future forecaster in the family… but that was a good guess.
Some of you are getting close with the guesses but it’s complicated. ![]()
We will chat again later Today… take care folks!

Oh Chris… will we have to wait until the end of the week for the BIG SECRET?? Would be great to have you back in Lexington. I was just reading the comments from the last post trying to figure out what the BIG SECRET might be when I saw the post from KP regarding the Golden Wolly Worm. I have seen one this year and it was Golden. Does anyone know what that means? I have never seen one that color before and it blew my mind. Might have to go down here to the “store” and find an “Old Timer” who might have the answer.
Sara….I did the same thing. I’m hoping Chris is moving back instead of the alternative and moving farther away!
Chris……Usually during weather lulls we all turn to talking about food. At least that’s what happens when we’re waiting on the “BIG ONE” to hit in winter months! LOL!
Thanks Chris for the update…we seriously need the rain…we do not want a bad fire season, especially in Eastern Kentucky. Still eagerly awaiting the BIG news…
My guess….chris is going to work for the Weather Channel!! Haha. I said to heck with the weather,,, employed the sprinkler on my yard and now have some green showing through. Take that mother nature!!!!!
Can you say DROUGHT? As expected…after at or above average precip. for 10 straight months, nature has decided it’s time to start balancing things out again. No rain in sight from looking at the latest GFS run. In fact, it shows only a chance at rain two weeks from now. Forest fire season is going to be BAD this year. And like Chris said…we are in the driest part of the year for Kentucky. October averages only 2.70″ of rain in Lexington. Not looking good!
As I said the other day in a post that didn’t post, it’s going to be a disappointing fall for leaf colors due to the lack of rain in addition to fire risks and water rashioning possible. I hope it doesn’t come to that. Wx Man, why is it that Oct is such a dry month??? I mean what happens to the weather systems during that month? Is it the lull between summer and fall transition?? Nature’s way of a switch over??
49* Chilly degrees down here this morning, had to actually kick the furnace on for a few minutes this morning for the kiddos getting ready for school…
While every one is on the wooly worm subject, I have noticed those golden colored ones as well. Not the typical black, or red or black and red striped. but almost an bright auburn color…oh well WHO KNOWS ?? maybe Mr. Fryre(not sure on that spelling) can let us in on what his Japanese maple has to say about that!! I know the old timers would say that if the wooly worms are solid red that it would dictate a mild, calm winter…We can only hope thats not the case… I for one am tired of MILD, AND NONHAPPENING WINTERS !!!..
KRinRichmond wrote: maybe Chris getting a job at the Weather CHannel..LOL..now that would be something..instead of Abrams and Bettes at night it could be Bailey and Bettes…lol.. I think the suspense is gonna drive us all to the nutty farm..lol..
Chris
PLEASE come back to home to KY!
quiet times ahead and NO RAIN.
Well better the dryness happen now than in the winter months.
My guess on the big news: The high winds have shattered the snowdome. 🙂
KR…that is a good question. Why is the Fall transistional period so much drier than the Spring transition? If you look at stats…our 3 wettest months of the year are July, then May, then June! No kidding! But March is pretty wet too (4.41″). So what makes September-November so dry? Maybe Chris can get into that since he has more room. 🙂 Or I can try a condensed version one day…
Balance? When’s the last time the plains have been in a drought? I honestly don’t remember.
I’d be happy with 2.70 inches of rain in the month of October. I got a new rain gauge in late July and put it out on my back porch. Three times I have dumped out 2/10ths of an inch and that is all. That’s from late July to mid-September. I’ve got bees buzzing around all the water I’ve put out for the wildlife.
Maybe Chris is going to CNN to cover the hurricanes with Anderson Cooper and Rob Marciano. That would be quite a gig. Anderson Cooper was waist deep in water doing a live report in Houston and another guy told him a snake swam behind him. I was waiting for that to happen. The snakes are quite poisonous and they are everywhere. Those guys are so eager to get a unique shot that they do some semi-dangerous things. Chris would have more sense.
If anybody finds out the weather forecast involving a golden wooly worm, please let us know.
Hi Everyone! I sure hope this post shows up, the last few I’ve sent haven’t posted. Chris, thanks for the directions on how to post.
I am curious about the “big” news…but I sincerely hope it does not mean that Chris is leaving the area.
…I haven’t seen any wooly worms yet.
🙁
