Good Friday to one and all and welcome to our long holiday weekend! The unofficial end to summer will go out on a pretty tranquil note around here. That can’t be said about the tropics as we are going into one heck of a busy period and one that is likely to be in our memories for years to come.
Before we go to the tropics… let’s talk about our weather with the all important headlines.
1. Friday will see partly sunny skies with temps warming into the mid and upper 80s ahead of a cold front that will swing in by the end of the day.
2. That front will produce some scattered showers and thunderstorms by later this afternoon into the evening hours and could interrupt some high school football action. Scattered is the key word here.
3. Saturday and Sunday look pretty good with slightly cooler temps and lower humidities. Highs will range from the low to mid 80s.
4. The weather over in littlebrotherville looks good for my Cats to pluck the Cardinals! ![]()
5. Labor Day will be much warmer with temps hitting the upper 80s to near 90 as the humidity returns. Can we get a stray storm across the south? Possibly.
6. Most of next week looks pretty warm as we await a cold front and anything that MIGHT come from the tropics by the end of the week.
7. Any forecaster referencing the GFS and the GFS only should never be allowed to forecast again! Seriously… this model is so out of touch right now that it really isn’t funny and it simply cannot handle everything that is going on. Go ahead NWS… refer to it and blindly follow it this weekend and next week. The blog will be waiting for you!!
haha
Okay Okay… to the tropics and our twin terrors Gustav and Hanna. The following set of maps will update for you each time they get new images so make sure you check back. Here is the sat shot…
The latest track and info on Gustav from the National Hurricane Center…

And the hurricane model tracks…
This will likely become a category 3 or greater storm as it enters the Gulf Of Mexico this weekend and continue to strengthen all the way to wherever it decides to hit land. The NHC and the models say Louisiana is the prime target for this storm and that is a safe choice right now. In reality… anywhere from the Florida panhandle to Texas should be on high alert. Looking at everything… I would not be surprised if this storm actually didn’t wind up coming farther eastward toward Biloxi or Mobile. On thing the models have been doing this year is overplaying the strength of east coast ridges. This would be what steers Gustav and if this high is weaker… it will likely end up hitting land farther east. Either way… this is going to be one bad storm!
Hannah is ready to become a hurricane and will slowly move to the northwest then west over the weekend into early next week. Here is the latest NHC track…
Hanna may come calling on Florida as a major hurricane by the middle and end of next week. There are no less than 3 other systems in the Atlantic that may develop into storms over the next week.
I warned you several weeks ago that the tropics would explode before August was over! Let’s just hope no one get’s hurt out of any of these systems. It’s easy to get carried away and marvel at these storms but we have to remember how the effect real peoples lives. God bless em!
I will update many times over the weekend. Did you expect anything else from the blog? Holiday? The blog doesn’t know the meaning of the word! ![]()
Take care!

Thanks Chris……I remember you saying these storms would be coming one on top of the other. When you’re good you’re good. Huh? Let’s pray that they hit a not so populated area. Life is so rough now as it is, let alone a hurrican come and make things worse for those living along the coast of the gulf(or us with those oil rigs for that matter).
Thamks Chris…there is a DENSE FOG ADVISORY for Eastern Kentucky until 9am. Also–not sure if this was caused by the fog–there has been an injury accident on Highway 15 just inside Knott County near the Letcher County line. The highway is blocked at this time. Stay safe.
This morning the models are not budging. Still taking Gustav toward New Orleans. HWRF shows a central pressure around 904mb near landfall the best I can tell. That is BAD news for Louisiana…
I have a small place in Florida on a barrier island that was hit my Jeanne and Francis. It has taken several years to get back to normal but it is back. This tropical stuff is scary and I will be watching closely. A friend of mine, lives in the Panhandle, another near Tampa. Scary stuff.
Thanks Chris for all your updates.
Hey Chris,
How does the weather look for next Saturday & Sunday, September 5th & 6th. There are many KY cyclists heading to London for two days of races. It looks like the remnants of Gustav could be in our area by then. What do you think?
Hey everyone! Good to see WXman posting once again. Now if we can just get BubbaG and Rolo back the gang will be complete! 🙂
BradL… Make sure you ask me again later this weekend or early next week and I will try to get more specific for you. Right now it looks like a front may be nearing the region with the chance for some showers and storms. All of this depends on Gustav and Hanna though. Both are likely to hit the gulf coast states. Yes I said both as Hanna should cross Florida and get into the gulf.
Take care guys!
Chris, I agree with your thoughts on where Gustave will likely head. GFDL and HWRF models point towards a NOLA-Miss landfall. Not what I want to see. Current GFDL brings Gustav ashore right on top of my daughters in Bay St. Louis.
Going to be a nerve wracking weekend.
At least college football has started. That was a scary beatdown the Old Ball Coach put on N.C. State last night.
Gustav really starting to wrap up porbably is a hurricane right now but NHC is going to wait for recon this afternoon.

My buds from met. school and I have a friendly bet going. My bet right now is that Gustav will strike the U.S. coastline somewhere along Texas. I think the high pressure ridge in the southeast U.S. will be in place and will drive Gustav more westward toward western LA or possibly TX. Time will tell…
No matter where it lands, this thing is probably going to cause mass destruction. Can you believe Hanna may hit the U.S. as a hurricane at almost the same time? That would be a first I think.
Hey Chris! I just found out my son in on his way to the gulf, get this, an ultimate frisbee tournament! How in the world could you play frisbee with a hurrican on it’s way?! He plays for the WKU club. What are those kids thinking. As of now it hasn’t been postponed. I wish they’d all rethink this.
By the way Chris. Bubba G and Rolo usually wait until snow possibilites before they post. I miss them during the summer months too!
Looks like it is going to be interesting the next week or so, as we all watch the gulf. I pray for those in the path of these storms……may god bless them.
Looks like I need to get gas before prices go thru the roof!!!
It looks like there’s a line of storms working their way east! We need to get these storms through here so we can all start our nice, long holiday weekend!
anyone own a gas station? we need to all come visit you before the prices go up…:(
………….
There will be alot going on next week, snow and cold out west, heatwave in the east Not 1 but 2 landfalling MAJOR HURRICANES probably within days apart…not to mention whats on their tails headed this direction. Makes you wonder what winter will be like this yr…(IT ALWAYS LEADS UP TO WINTER WEATHER TALK WITH ME)…LOL…
severe thunderstorm warning for owen county.
