Good Thursday everybody! Our Wednesday sure was a wet one for parts of eastern Kentucky with some rains even hitting central parts of the state. A general 1″-2″ fell in the east with much lighter amounts across central Ky.
A few showers will still be possible through the day in the east. The rest of the state will try to break out into partly sunny skies. Temps will be tricky because of the clouds and few showers. Sunshine and you hit the low 80s… clouds and you struggle into the mid and upper 70s for highs. Yes, it is that simple! ![]()
Let me give you some quick weather headlines for our part of the world before we get into all the hurricane stuff.
1. You already know about today so please just skip down to number 2! ![]()
2. A weak front will move closer to us by Friday afternoon. Temps in front of the front can warm into the high 80s in some areas if we can get enough sunshine.
3. A few showers and storms will be possible by Friday afternoon and these may stick around into the start of Saturday in the east.
4. Can we get a strong storm out of this?
5. The air behind the front is a little cooler and less humid. Your Saturday and Sunday look good with highs in the low to mid 80s with partly sunny skies.
6. Labor Day itself looks good as well with temps warming even more with upper 80s to near 90 a possibility. Can we get a late day shower or storm?
Now we go to the tropics and what has a shot at being a memorable few weeks as we may be dealing with several storms and US landfall threats. The first will come from Gustav later this weekend into Labor Day along the Gulf Coast. Gustav is about to be joined by Hanna. You can see the couple on thus sat shot…
That is Gustav on the left with the soon to be Hanna on the right. Both should become major hurricanes in the coming days.
The track for Gustav is about as scary as one can get as a lot of the models bring this storm toward a CAT 4 or 5 as it nears of all places… NEW ORLEANS! While that is certainly a long way from being set in stone… check out the charts below to see what the Hurricane Center and the models are thinking…![[Image of 5-day forecast of predicted track, and coastal areas under a warning or a watch]](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/storm_graphics/AT07/refresh/AL0708W5_sm2+gif/025013W_sm.gif)

Regardless of where this goes… it is not going to be pretty. This is heading into the heart of Oil Rigs so get your gas now before the prices soar once again.
Hanna will strengthen as well over the next few days. The European Model takes this storm into Florida as a major hurricane late next week. We will focus on that storm in the coming days as well… but it’s Gustav that is the main concern at the moment.
BTW… Gustav may end up bringing some rains to us by the middle and end of next week. We shall see.
Take care.

Thanks for the update Chris. I’ve been watching the convection develop on Gustav the last hour or so and it’s just absolutely blowing up now that it’s back over water.
For all you weather nerds out there that use Google Earth, check out http://www.gearthblog.com/blog/archives/2008/07/storm_tracking_with_google_earth.html for a ton of cool storm tracking options including Hurricane tracking including updated satellites and model tracks. I’ve been toying around with it the last day or two and I’m absolutely loving it.
Thanks Chris! I tapped my gas tank yesterday! I pray that this storm doesn’t produce as forcast! I don’t want lives lost or property damaged. I’ll certainly watch to see what this storm does over the weekend.
Thanks Chris…the AP is reporting that New Orleans may have to be evacuated…I hope and pray Gustav spares New Orleans.
Good morning, Chris, ad thank you for the update. Gustav appears to be becoming a BIG headache for a lot of folks, and that includes those of us who are not going to take a direct hit form it! (gas prices, as you alleduded to)
Now, you are telling me we are going to have Hanna, too?!? And it is going up toward the east coast? (probable)
Please look into your crystal ball and let me know if there is another one right behind that one!
by the way, our rain TOTAL for Fay (at my house) was 2.5 inches of the much needed stuff! This morning, we have mostly cloudy skies, but they are beginning to break up somewhat. I am hoping that the front gets through here and the rain part is gone by Saturday AM.
Looking forward to, and closely watching for the next update, for Gustav, and Hanna. And got to end this with the chant…C-A-T-S Cats,Cats, Cats!!! 😉
Wow. Gustav for NOLA and Hannah for Miami.
At the same time…..
rain would be the one good thing from gustav, it looks like it will be a nasty one. hopefully hanna will turn out to sea. UK/UL looks great now on sunday!!!!
And don’t forget the disturbance now evident in the Bay around the Yucatan. So there are 3 tropical systems spinning out there at the same time!! If you look back toward Africa…it’s a conveyor belt of tropical waves! The Atlantic is open for business, and this may start to look like 2005 all over again soon!
Sorry ya’ll meant to say topped! Guess I can’t spell!
euro slams gustav and hannah both into new orleans let’s hope this does not happen. the tropics are wild now.
That Euro run is just CRAZY.
