Good Wednesday everyone! Well… what is left of Tropical Storm Fay delivered a nice soaking rain for much of eastern Kentucky. Many areas picked up a good inch or two of rain. Ares farther west didn’t fare so well with only a few showers showing up.
Showers will continue across mainly eastern Ky on our Wednesday. Since we have a tropical air mass in place… some locally heavy rains will continue. Highs will range from the low 80s west of I-75 to the mid 70s in the east. Here is a radar for you to follow through the day…
Thursday will see a return of temps in the middle 80s for most of the state. It should be a rather humid day as well. We will be watching a cold front that will be marching toward the region by Friday as clouds increase with a few showers and storms by later in the day. This will be just in time for the kickoff of the high school football season. ![]()
Showers should move out early Saturday leaving us with a good looking rest of the Labor Day Weekend. Slightly cooler and less humid air will be with us Sunday as highs hit the low 80s. The weather looks good for my Cats to take care of business in littlebrotherville! ![]()
This weekend will likely be remembered for one other reason… Gustav. This became a hurricane early Tuesday then slammed Haiti and weakened a bit. It will become a hurricane again very soon as it eyes the Gulf Of Mexico. Here is a sat shot…
The latest National Hurricane Center Track…![[Image of 5-day forecast of predicted track, and coastal areas under a warning or a watch]](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/storm_graphics/AT07/refresh/AL0708W5_sm2+gif/025013W_sm.gif)
And the latest hurricane model tracks…
That is a scary looking map as we could easily be looking at a major hurricane in the Gulf on Labor Day weekend! You may want to get gas right now as prices may very well be on the way up in the coming days. ![]()
Believe it or not… we have 3 other systems in the Atlantic that may become storms over the next week or so. Wow!!!
I will update as needed through our Wednesday so make sure you check back.
Take care!

Thanks Chris! We’ve had a small shower here in Versailles this early morning. Each and every bit helps! I know everyone in the eastern part of the state is releived to have had Fay help out. I can’t wait for the cooler weather. Not only for lower temps, but to have all these possible hurrican threats behind us. My budget is streached to the max and I might be looking for part time work in the near future just to pay the gas and grocery bills!
The radar shows nothing here but it has rained all night. A good, soaking rain started around midnight and has just slackened off over the past few minutes.
The headline in today’s Georgetown News Graphic states that our water supply is low and we may be on the verge of conservation measures. Hopefully the rain last night helped.
We finally got a bit of Fay’s rain last night. I’m in eastern Bourbon County and we completely missed out on the 1.5 inches that rained on Lexington Monday afternoon. My rain gauge shows 1/10th of an inch, which is the only rain we’ve had in three weeks. It’s very dry here.
Gustav is very scary. It was this time of year when Katrina hit. This is when things get active and dangerous. I don’t see how Gustav will miss the U.S. or how it will be anything other than a major hurricane. I hope everybody is prepared.
Thanks for the update, Chris…keep us posted on Gustav.
Thanks for the update Chris. With the 3rd anniversary of Katrina on Friday it’s kind ironic to think we could be looking at another storm hitting New Orleans again this soon. I just hope more people on the gulf coast are paying attention to this storm than Katrina.
Good day to you, Chris! We were some of the ‘lucky’ ones who get a good rain out of the remnants of Fay! At our house, the total rainfall for the event was 2.3 inches, and it all came down as a slow soaker, which was great! Our yard is green again, and my poor plants, which we had been watering, look a whole lot better! I only wish more of the state could have gotten in on it. I know we ALL needed it!
Please tell me that the tropical threat is only that at this time…a threat. As long as those waves just meander around out there, then my Florida trip will be alright!
Meanwhile, Gustav seems to want to be a bad boy and do some damage. Hopefully, he won’t get as strong as he could, and things will not be as bad as they were after Katrina! One can only hope!
In any event, I am ready for football! Really looking forward to the game on Sunday, as well as the high school kickoff this weekend. The Ray Correll Bowl kicks things off here in Somerset this weekend, as well.
Keep us posted on Gustav, and that other ‘stuff’ out there, Chris, as I know you will. Have a GREAT rest of your day!
Good afternoon all
I read the blog daily following Chris over from WKYT but rarely post. Just wanted to say here in Somerset it looks and feels like a fall day!! It gets me in the mood to decorate 🙂
Thank you Chris for continuing the blog. I know it’s alot of extra work but we all appreciate it.
Have a good day everyone!
The current forecast track for Gustav is nearly identical to the track for Hurricane Camille in 1969. We all know how that turned out. I am nervously watching this, as my daughters live at ground zero for the current track. We did this dance with Katrina.
I just read that LSU has moved the start time up for it’s home game in Baton Rouge on Saturday from 7:30 to 4:00 p.m. Not a good sign.
Rain is still coming down here in my part of Perry County.. It is not as heavy now but still.. Closing in on two inches since yesterday afternoon.
OMG!!! I am heading out to Destin, Florida this Saturday!! I have needed a vacation all summer and now this?!!! I am very upset and afraid! I hope it doesn’t hit the panhandle of Florida!
Hey Chris we miss you!!!
Beverly, you are probably going to have to make a call on whether to go on Friday night. Unless the track shifts to Texas, Destin is going to get a dose. The worst part of a hurricane is the right front quadrant relative to its forward motion. Some call it the “dirty side” of a hurricane.
We went through the same thing in 2005 with Dennis. We had a vacation scheduled at Seagrove Beach, and the rental agency called us and said to stay the heck away. We were able to regroup and get a place at St. Augustine Beach. If you are vacation starved, that would appear to be a safe alternative.
FLASH FLOOD WARNING for east-central Letcher County until 11:45pm…flooding taking place in the Fleming-Neon area at this time. Highways 805 and 317 are under water. Turn around…don’t drown.
Thanks feederband!! We can’t go down the night before because we are renting a vehicle and I don’t know if we can get it an extra day. I may look into going somewhere else!!
