Good Tuesday everyone! The headline says it all… our day will be filled with watching the radar to see EXACTLY where the heavy rain axis from what is left of Fay goes. We have seen some heavy rains in several areas already and a lot more is yet to come.
The models are in two camps… the GFS is farther east while the NAM brings heavy rains to all of central and eastern Kentucky.
Here is the GFS…
And the NAM for the same time…
Both are bringing a swath of 2″4″ rains (with locally higher amounts) across the state… it is simply a question of does the storm come up west of the mountains or does it ride up and east of the mountains? The radar will have all the answers today.
Rain and storms will develop from south to north through the day with the heaviest rainfall coming Tuesday night and early Wednesday. Even with the dry ground… we have to watch the creeks and streams… especially across southeastern Ky where the heavy rains are a certainty with either track.
Temps should stay in the 70s the next few days for highs and could even struggle to hit 70s during the heaviest rains.
Thursday and Friday will see very warm conditions returning with highs in the mid and upper 80s. A cold front will move through Friday evening into early Saturday with an increase in showers and a few thunderstorms. Cooler and drier air will work in for Sunday and Labor Day.
Gustav has formed near Haiti and this storms looks like it can become a monster in a few days. Here is an updating sat shot…
There is another system in the Atlantic that will likely become a storm in the next few days. Gustav will become a hurricane very soon and track toward the Gulf. Here is the National Hurricane Center’s track forecast..![[Image of 5-day forecast of predicted track, and coastal areas under a warning or a watch]](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/storm_graphics/AT07/refresh/AL0708W5_sm2+gif/025812W_sm.gif)
We could very easily have a major hurricane in the Gulf labor day weekend!!!!!
I will update the rain chances coming later today so check back.
Take care.

Good Morning all! I hate to hear Gustave will become a monster, especially since it’s track heads for the Gulf and all those oil rigs. All it takes is a little speculation to raise gas prices much less that they are damaged in the least.
The rain from Fay is a welcome relief to most all of us here in Ky. We here in Woodford got a good amount yesterday and need more.
Here’s wishing all of you a great day.
Thanks Chris for the update…we FINALLY got Fay’s rain here in Letcher County around 3:30pm yesterday. Stay safe on the wet roads…Turn around, don’t drown.

that would be scary to happen again, it comes in as stronger than Katrina did that would be a disaster
I’m afraid Gustav is going to be a serious problem for people from NOLA to Pensacola. I’m hoping for some kind of shift from the models, but right now, I don’t see it happening.
That was a nice drink of water we received in Lex yesterday. Let’s have a repeat today.
Still no rain here… 🙁 Looks like Fay is gonna stay south/east of me. Congrats! to all that got/will get some “wet stuff falling from the sky”. Chris, I love all the new “bells & whistles” you keep adding. Great website!!! Thanks!!
Downsloping….blah!! 🙁
It has been raining in Pikeville about 40 minutes but not heavy.I hope it picks up soon!!!!!
I’m getting REALLY BUMMED every time I check the current radar. I doesn’t look like the rain is gonna make it my way. Need more of a northerly shift. Looks like the GFS is winning out, and I was hoping for the NAM.
Eastern KY needs the rain so I feel good they’re getting it, but I’m still bummed we aren’t here in Lexington. The rain yesterday was nice, but fell too fast to soak into the rock hard ground, so while it’ll help our “numbers” the actual help will be minimal 🙁
Good afternoon, Chris and everyone! WHEEEEEE!!!! wE are getting a good amount of rain. It started yesterday afternoon, and after a period of slow soaking rain which produced 4/10 of an inch yesterday pm, it started again sometime overnight, and has rained non-atop for most of the day! A good, slow soaking rain to this point.
I see from watching the weather that there is a possibility of seeing heavy rain overnight into tomorrow. I don’t mind, but I just hope that it isn’t too much at one time. I would hate to see it wasted. I am also hoping that most of us get in on this stuff! I know how dry it has been statewide for the past three weeks or so.
Chris, as for the mention of yet ANOTHER system behind Gustav; SAY IT AIN’T SO! PLEASE! At least, tell me it is going to hang out for a while or hurry up and get here and gone! I really do NOT want to go to Florida and stay for 10 days when a hurricane is coming! (Or a tropical storm, either, for that matter.) Did that once, don’t relish doing it again! Once was enought, believe me.
About Gustav….becoming very strong already, I see. What are your thoughts on it’s impact on the gulf coast states, and where do YOU thin it will make landfall? Right now, it looks like either New Orleans is in it’s sights, or possibly the Texas, Lousiana coast. What do you think? Is Florida going to miss this one? (Family down ther, so I am interested. Sorry to be boring about it.)
Chris, I will post our rain totals when I get home and get to check the rain gauge this afternoon. I hope others who are receiving rain will do so, too.
Take it easy out there folks, and watch out for motorists who have forgotten how to drive on wet roads! Be safe!
Oil prices already up 5 dollars a barrel because of Gustav
Looks like we won’t see much rain here in Gtown either. The water plant measured 0 yesterday, we had just enough to wet the ground at that was it.
Heading out soon to fill both vehicles and every gas can in sight while it is still 3.50. Shell is going to start evacuating gulf platforms tomorrow according to CNBC. Hope it’s not too late.
GET YOUR GAS NOW !!! ACCUWEATHER IS FORECASTING GUSTAV TO BE A CAT.3 Hurricane in the GUlf by late sunday and Monday!!!
…………….
Hopefully Fay has busted the DOME over the southeast. I havent seen a storm move the way this one has in YRS… ONly if it were Jan. We would be talking 12″ of snow or more down here its been pouring the rain all day long.. heavy at times.
