Good Wednesday everyone. Our work week is now halfway over with but it would appear our nice temperatures are going to be sticking around for several more days. But… we are seeing the pattern trying it’s best to change up a bit in the coming days to one that is more likely to produce some showers.
The first system we are tracking will be our souther storm that will head through the Carolinas into the northeastern US. A very fall and winter like track. This will bring an increase in clouds to the state Wednesday with a shower or two across the southeastern mountains. Temps will be pretty easy… sunshine outside your house means 80-85… more clouds and you are stuck in the upper 70s to near 80.
Low level moisture looks to be rather plentiful in a northwesterly flow setting up for Thursday and Friday. This means a few showers will likely be on the move across Kentucky. The NAM shows some of those showers we are talking about. Here is a look at the Friday afternoon map…
Temps over the course of Thursday and Friday will be totally cloud and shower dependent. Highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s look pretty good to me right now. That is lower than what I was thinking earlier this week as our fall pattern does NOT want to let go. Unsettles weather will continue into next week. Now… warmer temps will try to build in according to the models. But… with a wet pattern likely developing… we shall see.
By the way… check out the map above and cast your eyes to the bottom right hand corner. The NAM is forecasting one of our little Atlantic systems to develop into a storm and head toward Florida. Several other models are also showing something similar to this next week.
I was looking a the REALLY looooooong range models to see what glimpse they may give us into our fall months that are fast approaching. Some of the seasonal models are showing a chilly fall for a lot of the region. Check out these two maps from the CFS model…
October 22nd
October 23rd
While those are strictly for entertainment purposes only… some flakes before Halloween? Those maps certainly show it. Now don’t go yelling that your friendly weather dude is forecasting snow in October! Well… that is unless it actually does snow in October then you are allowed to scream it from the tops of the mountains. ![]()
Go out and have a great Wednesday and I will update you again later in the day.
Take care.

Hmmm…. Snow in October sounds fun, like when I was 7 years old dressed up as Batman trick or treating in about an inch of it. Anyways I for one am definitely enjoying the cooler than average weather, although my yard could use a little rain to spruce things up a bit. I never thought trying to find a job in TV Meteorology would be so hard, 50 resumes out there and not a hit so far. Time to churn out a few more and keep on casting the line hoping for a nibble. Chris I sure miss watching ya at noon, but I’m glad we’ve still got the blog here. Hope everyone has a great day!
Chris…I love your enthusiasm for a COLD SNOWY winter. Lets hope the pattern shift starts this winter!
Thanks Chris for the update…the only time I can remember seeing snow in October was on Halloween in 1993.
I’m excited for a chilly fall! Bring on the changing colors and snowflakes 🙂
I also wanted to thank you guys for remembering my family in your paryers. thank you so much for the kind thoughts.
WE still have to get through today, and then, hopefully, it will be better tomorrow.
Wow! Chris, thanks for the update. Looks like we are going to be looking at “Fay” shortly out in the Atlantic. But, I can’t complain about the weather we have had for the past few days.
Chris, remember the other day I told you that the last time I remembered a pattern like this was in the fall and winter of 1976-77. I wonder if we could possibly get the same results snow wise as we did then? I guess time will tell…. 😀
Hey William…..Holloween 1993…….didn’t JANUARY 1994 follow that!!!!LOL
Hey Chris!! We miss you!! I hope that storm is over before Aug 30th!! We go to Florida then and I don’t want a hurricane on the horizon!! I hope there is actually a place to go! Maybe it won’t get blown away!!
i didnt even know you had left until my daughters school started back and started watching the news again wkyt will not be the same without u telling the news….i love this weather its so much better then 90s
I think you all forget this is Lexington we’re talking about. Home of the Snow Dome!
BuckeyeFan,
Shh!!!
The more you say that, the more it will be true. The atmosphere is trying to correct itself this summer for all those nasty weather spells we’ve been having in the past few years, so give it some time and things will come around.
This August anomaly is definitely a different type of setup than what we’re used to seeing. I think this is a very good sign for some reloading in the next few months. Just wait, you’ll see. 🙂

Chris! It’s so fun to read those extended forcasts. It gets me all excited about the seasonal changes. That’s one reason I love good ‘ole KY!
Around seven years or so ago my son was running in the big State Cross Country meet out at the Horse Park. It turned so cold right before the race and started sleeting. That was right after Halloween. I think that’s the last time I remember it being so cold in the fall of the year. I love those kind of Autumns. Bring it on!!!
thanks, chris a lot of early predictions for colder than normal temps to end the year.
Chris, I read that cold weather is building up in Canada early this year. Have you seen this? Does this mean good things for us this fall and Winter?
When I bought my house in 2001, it snowed on I believe the 27th (oct). I signed the papers that day and it was snowing outside. Did not stick, but I remember it being early.
Are you serious Clark?
92L starting to organize east of the Antilles. Could become a significant threat from Florida to the Carolinas.

Hey gang… I will have an updated post a little later today. Technical problems tonight. Take care.
Thanks Chris…….I see your routine has changed dramatically since your days at WKYT! You’re still up so early in the morning! I hope all is well with the new job and your family now that you’re a bit settled!
SNOW in OCT.. I’ve been saying it for weeks now.lol… This is gonna be one of those years, I can feel it in my bones, well maybe thats alittle bit of arthritus.LOL….
I’m ready for sweatshirts and jeans. Now that I’m retired, I don’t have a dress code to follow. I do change out of my housecoat by mid-morning. 🙂
I love Fall – my favorite season. I’m ready for it – even if it does snow in October.
Who knows what today lunar day?
