Good Thursday everyone and thanks for blogging with us. We are heading toward some VERY pleasant weather across the bluegrass state… just in time for the weekend!
Yee haw!
I have been talking for some time about a big trough digging in across the eastern half of the country toward the end of this week. That trough is still on target and will bring us our taste of September. We have been dealing with showers and thunderstorms for the past several days. We will likely have another day or so of some widely scattered thunderstorms, but things will be drying out for the most part.
Instead of showing you the famed GFS… let’s try the European model this go around. Here is what the model shows for this coming Friday…
You see the dip in the east with the ridge heading our west. This is some fairly chilly air for the 2nd week of August. So cool, in fact, that some lake effect RAIN showers will be possible for areas to our north! A sure sign that fall is just about here.
For us… temps will continue to come down with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s from Friday through Sunday. Morning lows will be on the cool side with temps in the low to mid 50s. That may actually approach record levels in some areas. Can we even get an upper 40? I guess we will see. ![]()
Early next week will see temps making a run toward normal. But… another trough will try to dig in by Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. This one has a chance to spawn a rare August storm across the Ohio Valley. The European model shows this nicely…
The GFS is coming around to this idea as well. Moral of the story… I don’t see an heat in our picture through next week. Temps at normal or below look likely.
I will be throwing some fall and winter thoughts your way in the coming days and will be doing some more blasts from the pasts.
Take care everyone!

Good morning Chris! I can’t wait to hear anything what you think may happen in the fall and the winter months. I know it’s hard to predict what’s in store for a season, but it’s fun to speculate. Anything to get us dreaming of cooler weather, chili, football and the hope of a big snow!

Well looks like every forecast for my area was a bust for yesterday and today nobody nailed this not a drop of rain all day yesterday and not looking promising for today either which i’m glad because i am off today and tomorrow and i get to accomplish something outside 🙂
Thanks Chris for the update…we had a thunderstorm here in Letcher County around 5 this morning…can’t wait for the better temps.
Good morning gang, Thanks Chris for the update! I for one am really looking forward to the cooler temps. I can get some much needed work outside done on those nice cool days.
Can’t wait to see what the next “Blast from the Past” will be about.
And speaking of Fall and Winter. My mother and I were discussing the garden yesterday, when we got to talking about the corn this yr. Mine and her’s both this yr. have very thick shucks and alot of silk on them. She told me that the ole’ timers say that is a sign of a harsh winter…So I know its just an ole folk tale, but I tend to believe alot of those tale’s are true. Nature has a way of forewarning… I guess we’ll see how it all pans out.
I wonder if the dreaded southeastern ridge will be with us this winter….

THURSDAY 8 AM IN LIGHT OF THE 06Z GFS EAST COAST HURRICANE THREAT IN TWO WEEKS, A LOOK AT WINTER
Shades of 2000-2001?
The analogs of El Nino winter, La Nina winter, then neutral enso for the following winter (This is a theory I have on cyclical pulsing of the overall global weather pattern) and the ending of a La Nina followed by a neutral winter give us some very interesting ideas on the upcoming start of winter into the midpoint. The idea of a moderate to warm November carries weight here now in studying this, a break from what should be a wet August-October in much of the nation. It is as if there is a relaxation in the pulse before winter comes. But I am thinking from later November through January, though I am not sure yet about exact timing, there is some tough sledding on the way with the coldest December/January period since 2000-2001 for the East and plains. The fact, that the European computer model is showing the fear I have gives us some objective model guidance here, so while not ready for a slalom run into a cold winter, at least for December and January, I am waxing my skis.
………………………..
COULD THIS BE THE WINTER WE’VE BEEN WAITING FOR, FOR MANY YRS. NOW??? TIME WILL TELL….
Thanks Chris for all you do for us keeping up too blog and working. You are a great man I just wish everybody had a great weatherman like we all have. I’m still so mad at my cable company I want WSAZ
I believe November will be warmer than average, especially for the southeastern U.S. before the winter hits, and then, when it does, it should come in full force for December and January especially.
Guess we’ll see! Can’t wait to see what Chris says. 🙂
Thanks Tim……At least that gives us a little hope! It’s never too early to dream!
Hi Evry1. Thanks for your dedication, Chris. NO doubt you come upon it honestly, but also from your experience with WKYT. Dave Spencer came to do an interview with us about the death of the Frankfort veterinarian (I worked for her). He was VERY courteous, professional, and compassionate. We all Greatly apppreciated it. We that can’t get WSAZ miss seeing you! Anyway, weather wise, looks like a fine weekend coming up. I was hoping to get in some swimming and sunbathing, but that might be a little too chilly for me. So I’ll just weed my gardens and mow the yard (then I’ll want to jump in that pool) LOL. Have a great weekend everyone!
