Good evening, everyone. Heavy rain and a band of heavy snow take center stage tonight. Where this band of heavy snow sets up is still to be determined, but my latest thoughts look like this…
The cutoff with that band of snow is ridiculous. You could go from zero accumulation to several inches in just a matter of a few miles. I won’t know for sure where this band sets up until I’m actually seeing it with my own eyes. For areas under that band… it’s a thumping wet snow that comes down fast and furious late this evening into the wee hours. There is a high bust potential for any one location. User beware. That’s rare to hear from here. 🙂
The NAM is much more widespread and generous than I am…
The Hi-Res NAM…
I’m also watching the potential for flooding across southern and eastern Kentucky. Please keep a very close eye on water levels in these areas.

Looks like Richmond could be a big snow or bust! Chris, thanks for all your work, especially on the snow. I’ve followed you for 2 years and this is the first time to comment!
It is raining pretty good in Spencer Co. KY (yellow band on radar); but the air temp is 38F. I’ll take plain rain now. I am tired of the snow.
How much do you all think Ashland/Huntington area will get?
watch how simple this is….u find ur city/town on the map…and look at the prediction …boom 3-6 ” in ur case
I think CBS left his crystal ball at home, so I suggest upslope’s method. Usually works for me.

Reposting cause Mr Bailey and I apparently are on the blog at the same time. I posted this on the earlier update, and now I believe it even more. It’s an all or nothing type setup for sure!
I’m feeling les and less confident. Like freshman year when I asked Mary Jo Hopkins to the winter ball dance. Hope this snow turns out better than that did.
Lol
I suppose the NWS are waiting for back to back model runs to expand the advisory, both 7 pm RAP and HRRR expands the snow South and East
Link?
Was just one run, 8pm running now

Thanks.. So does the time loop on there stand for times? Like for instance does 10 mean 10 pm?
Yes
So according to that 1 model it will be snowing in Ashland by 10 pm? Looks like time will tell! Thanks kywildcat
Np, hope you get some snow, that site provides most models free of charge. The RAP runs hourly aswell
I will try to find the 8pm run on there. I probably won’t be able to though lol
9 pm hrrr http://pivotalweather.com/model.php?m=HRRR&p=acc10snow&rh=2016021518&fh=loop&r=rv&dpdt=
my question to anyone is does this snow band not move east ? or where does it go
North and east, follows the low.
Over the years, I have seen the upper air cooling either be fast enough to catch up with a lot of moisture left with a storm– hence giving a larger swath of snow–or move in later with the precipitation moving too fast too far to the East for the cold air to catch up.
I remember back to that very mild winter of 2012 when a large portion of East KY so a quick heavy wet snow near the end of February in a set-up like this, but the heavy snow did not move east as fast as the precip and Harlan County virtually got no snow while places like Hazard and NW saw several inches.
This will likely happen tonight one way or the other so I am not too excited yet:P
Now casting event.
Watching to see what unfolds.
33 degrees in Topmost of Knott County right now.
I’m betting on the birds. Seems like they have inside info on storms as they mob my feeders prior to the event. Today they were fighting for space at the feeders–and I have 7 of them and they were all busy. We’ll see if they are accurate predictors in a few hours!
Pretty exciting snow lottery going on!
Thanks Chris and fellow posters.
# of days until Spring?
The radar is showing snow over Bullitt Co., but its drizziling outside.
What a mess out there today and I cant imagine adding more snow on top of the slush. It will be torture to walk through. Snow on top and slush on the bottom. Better invest in a good pair of rain boots.
All rain right now in Georgetown. Guess that’s all we’ll see here. All the snow seems to be moving east of us.
CB did say there is bust potential for any one location. Mathematically that could be all locations 😉 🙂
Oh boy, HUGE flakes mixing in with the rain here in South Lexington at this moment. If heavy precip and dynamic cooling continue, I could definitely see those 8″+ totals just East of here!
Seems CB might be backing away from that, since he is now calling it slush instead of snow. Never seen 4″ to 8″ of slush. At least not when it falls.
Nah, he just tightened up the bands. Looks like Richmond is out of the sweat slush spot. This IMO is a good thing 🙂
sweet
Starting to see some huge snowflakes mix in here in northern Pulaski County
The water is really starting to rise fast on the kno laurel line.It looks like its gonna continue to rise quickly tonight and put some small creeks and streams to levels not seen in a few years.
Im wandering why the nws in jackson hasnt issued more than just a flood watch cause the stream down by our road is already coming outta the banks.
Rain here in Huntington wv.
Snowing heavy in north Richmond at the moment.
Forgot to even consider the compaction of this heavy wet snow. So with that in mind, not quite 8″+ but 4-6″+ very possible east of Lexington.
