Good Sunday, everyone. Showers and some thunderstorms are rumbling across the state today as colder air fights back in. This will set the stage for another active weather pattern taking shape. It’s one that will likely spit out a big Ohio Valley winter storm in a few days.
Let’s start with today and the showers and storms. This action is centered on the first part of our Sunday, with the bulk of the heaviest rains falling across the northern half of the state. Temps will still be mild, but slowly drop as the evening wears on.
Track the action…
A shower or two may be noted on Monday as temps come way down compared to the weekend numbers.
Our big storm system gets cranking late Tuesday and rolls in here on Wednesday with some wild weather. The low might pass right on top of central Kentucky with heavy rain and thunder just ahead of it, and cold air and a swath of snow behind it. As the low passes by to our northeast, wraparound snows kick in as temps crash…
The exact path of that low is still in question, and may not show itself until Monday. That track could will be the difference between 50s and heavy rain, and a thumping, wind driven snowfall where you live. If the above run works out as shown, most areas get heavy rain and high winds followed by a 25 degree temp drop in a few hours with snow kicking in.
The wind factor with this storm is really getting my attention…
40-50mph winds will be possible with that type of winter storm right on top of our region. That’s a monster storm!
The models are also hinting at an arctic front later next weekend…
I will have updates later today. Enjoy your Sunday and take care.
I predict that spring is around the corner nothing to see here

Troll Alert
Making some projections here. Thanks to the month of December, the winter season (December through February) for Louisville and Lexington might go down as one of the top ten warmest winter seasons on record. Hard to believe, after what some of us have had to endure the last 30 days or so. But Old Man Winter will be keep fighting to make sure his reputation will not be besmirched.
I love the sound of thunder in the morning.
Same here. When my husband and I took our morning walk, we heard thunder. Loved watching the clouds moving overhead.
Bring Spring. Looks like most chances for a big snow is over. Let’s at least get to average temps and dry out a little.
good ol’ thunderstorm this morning in pikeville. love it! i love a hefty snowstorm but honestly, im so ready for warm temps and sunny days. im already looking forward to mowing my lawn 🙂
What isn’t being said is that the normal high is almost 50 degrees now and snow chances are becoming less likely, not impossible obviously, just not likely. If you look at, and put any faith at extended forecasts on your phone’s weather apps, it appears the brutal cold and snow are a thing of the past. We will see.
I agree with you, we might get lucky but for the most part winter is over after this week. Im looking more forward to average temps or above than I am 40 degree cold rain with maybe a little leftover snow at this point. I would take average highs without daily rain and be a happy guy right now.
Yesterday was the one year anniversary of the coldest temperature I have ever personally experienced. It was -31 at my house in Bourbon County. It can still get cold enough to snow. ❄️
Well as we get closer it looks as if it’s not going to be THAT cold..yes colder than the norm. Tuesday through Saturday, but looks mostly rain, backside 1/2 inch. snow
Cats…good game, but I think the key in 2nd half Murray should have shot more!!!
Can anyone speak to why the topmost three counties in Northern KY (Boone, Kenton, Campbell) typically miss out of snow events or at least don’t get near the amount of snow as the rest of the state? I’ve lived here three years and we’ve consistently either missed out or gotten significantly less snow than the rest of KY.
Leaving Nashvegas in a few minutes. At the hotel, a dogwood has already bloomed.
I have full blown Spring Fever and any prospects of cold and winter weather are not the cure I need
Not sure where all the “winter is over” posts are coming from. Next week’s storm will bring – at a minimum – big cold behind it and possibly some significant wrap around snows. By next Saturday, Rodger sees highs will be back in the 20s and 30s. There’s more cold/snow chances through at least first week in March. One day in the 70s doesn’t mean winter is over. PREACH!
Rodger, I like your “winters not over” enthusiasm but according to TWC next Saturday is showing 48 for the high…
I’m not putting the winter clothes up just yet. I am transitioning to spring fever but don’t have a full blown case of it yet. Give me another couple of weeks and ask again. But I will say this …. The old adage is that if it thunders in February it will frost in May. The past few years have borne that out. Just sayin’. Have a great Sunday everyone. Thanks Chris for all you do.
