Good afternoon, all. We’re still watching and waiting for a big storm system to impact our weather in the coming days. Overall, I have no changes to the breakdown in my last update.
The models continue to advertise a huge Ohio Valley winter storm moving right on top of our region Wednesday into Wednesday night. That brings a lot of different weather through Thursday.
The heavy rain threat is real and could cause some high water issues. Here’s the latest GFS rainfall forecast…
The Canadian…
Colder air wraps in Wednesday night and Thursday causing the rain to change to snow. A few inches of snow are possible during this time…
Highs winds during this time could also cause issues. Gusts of 50mph will be possible through Thursday evening, when the storm moves away.
After this system, we wait for some sort of arctic front to arrive late Sunday or Monday. That should have a system zipping underneath in across the Tennessee Valley. This should lead us into a stormy March that features alternating cold and mild blasts of air. This setup suggests additional winter weather threats and that doesn’t make your friendly weatherdude very happy. 🙁
I will have another update this evening. Take care.
It’s just the way March is around here. No complaints.
Slowly backing away ..from more winter.
I just think we shouldn’t call this a Winter Storm..when it looks like 95% rain.
It is winter, and it is a storm. Therefore, this is a winter storm.
What do we call the same type of storm in october……fall storm…
Winter storm to me sounds like snow, sleet, ice, freezing rain, mix….not almost mainly rain
Yes Temps look to fall behind the low, but seen this before with this type of setup, quick 1/2 in snow about all
Totally in agreement. Winter is on its way out. Few more ankle biters like what is predicted this Thursday. The famed NW flow snows have been almost non existent this Winter.
yeah it never seems to changeover as quick as its forecasted too …and when it does ,most of the precip is long gone
I’m 54 years old and the biggest snow totals I’ve seen from one system have all come in March. Not saying this system will be one of those but to say we get only a few more “ankle biters”???
Both Memphis and Nashville had their all-time biggest single storm snowfalls in the month of March (one storm which nailed both cities IIRC). Some absurd total of like 21 inches for Nashville, 18 inches for Memphis.
Gene, all the “armchair expert mets” on here are saying winter is over so I guess it is lol. Amazing how a day in 70s makes people forget that March can bring big snows. Rodger in Dodger
You seem to act like an expert as well.
At this time, SPC has for Tuesday a “Marginal Risk” of severe wx only as far north as south-central Tennessee. Still a chance of some rumbles of thunder into Kentucky.
It’s areas much closer to the Gulf Coast (like the Florida panhandle) that will really be in the crosshairs for severe wx, including tornadoes.
Is there any chance we get a Spring Weather/Severe Weather Outlook?
Key themes: Rain, wind and mix.
Good news is any snow should be of the “snapchat” type, so you all with your salt trucks- stay at home!

This storm stinks!!! We shifted some odd 500 miles give or take a couple more hundred to the west in just 2 days. I agree with most on here that winter is mostly over; however, we can get the “biggies” in March like the infamous 93 Blizzard, but the later in the year, the less the snow stays on the ground. CB’s total seasonal winter storm predictions are actually fairly close for the season in most areas thus far, so I can’t complain.
I guess I am most disappointed in how much less active the southern branch of the jet was than I would have thought for such an extreme El Nino, but it does appear to be getting more active the closer we get towards Spring.
