Good afternoon, everyone. A big winter storm system is moving into the region and will bring some wicked weather. High winds, heavy rain, thunderstorms, a 30 degree temperature drop, and accumulating snow is on the way. All of that occurs in a matter of hours.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms move in from southwest to northeast this evening into tonight. This will increase the flash flood threat into Wednesday morning. The models are spitting out a general 1″-2.5″ of rain in a short amount of time.
NAM
GFS
As you know, thunderstorms can put down more than that. Stream and street flooding is a real possibility tonight and early Wednesday.
Temps spike toward the 60s in central and eastern Kentucky by midday Wednesday then CRASH from there. By late evening, most areas are in the low and middle 30s with snow flying. That’s a quick switch to snow from west to east and comes just a few hours after 60 degree temps and thunder.
Wraparound snows continue through Thursday with some flakes flying all the way into Friday. The GFS is consistent in showing the most accumulations during this time…
While likely overdone, It’s something I can’t totally discount. We will have to fight some melting, but the flow from the northwest is VERY strong during this time.
Speaking of that flow… the winds are going to CRANK. Gusts of 40mph or higher will be possible on occasion through Thursday.
In looking at the longer range pattern, it looks ugly for those of us wanting spring to go ahead and start. Winter weather threats are lurking through the middle of the month. 🙁
I leave you with your tracking toys for the day. Don’t forget to use the interactive radar to track the severe weather breaking out across the southern states. You can even watch live video streams from storm chasers!
I will have the very latest on WKYT-TV starting at 4pm. Another update then comes your way this evening. Take care.
Thanks, CB!
Any chance we will be seeing a couple of snow days this week? This teacher would love one more.
We haven’t had a March with decent weather around here since at least 2011 so I don’t know why 2016 would be any different.
2010 was the last March without significant precipitation numbers. Most of the last five years have ran around two inches more rain than normal. Not a good thing when trying to dry out from that wet winter ground. I would like to see some sunshine.
I just remember 2011 seemed nice weather-wise because it was sunny when UK was making their surprise run to the Final Four (and most importantly there wasn’t any snow). Could have had some ugly weather on non game-days I guess.
March 2012 is the year that I remember being so warm. In Bowling Green we started having 60’s at the end of February and it never really got cold again. There were several days in March that we had temperatures in the 80’s. It was the warmest March on record. The warmth came at a price though with 2 tornado outbreaks, one on March 2nd and the other in Northern Kentucky on March 23rd.
Winter weather threats into middle of march.
I hope that doesn’t mean storms like we’re getting ready to get…RAIN, BACKSIDE 1/2 in. Snow.
Yea that would have tornadoes written all over it.
I thought there was an artic front predicted for Sunday? TV Mets in my area (Huntington WV) have temps around 60 next Sunday and Monday, doesn’t seem very artic to me.
It was predicted, but prediction is turning out wrong….prediction of cold and snow is always about 30-40% accurate. ..compared to warm and rain 99.9% accurate. Funny how it works. Weatherman for winter would be a difficult job.
It is if you live in Miami Florida
A little cold for Miami Florida unless it was the low temps. Regardless, this week’s precip and temps are not impressive. Actually, I don’t think any of the national weather centers have issued flood watches or wind advisories yet…might tonight though. Overall, not impressed with this system as it is more of a late winter or spring type of storm. If we had the low tracking a little farther west and north, we could have been in on the severe weather that is going on down at the gulf.
Funny, I just got the wind advisory alert!
nobody else I see has this snow for western ky. nws Paducah shows rain and no accumulation for Ohio county.
