Good Thursday, everyone. Winter slammed back into the bluegrass state Wednesday as winds gusted to 50mph in a few spots. Flakes are flying today and will continue into Friday before our weekend turns much warmer. The recent roller coaster ride appears to be a sign of things to come as we head into March.
Wraparound snows can put down slushy, light accumulations for some today. This would mainly be on elevated and grassy surfaces. Winds are going to continue to howl and could reach 40mph at times.
Northwesterly winds continue into Friday and that should keep a few snow showers going across the central and east.
Highs will be back in the 30s.
Temps take off for the final weekend of February. Check out the forecast highs…
This is ahead of a cold front that moves in on Monday with our next chance of showers. The push of cold air behind this doesn’t look nearly as strong as a few days ago. From there, another big storm system develops and takes aim at our region. The GFS has a familiar look…
This is part of a pattern that has a lot of back and forth. That means additional wild temperature swings deep into March, and that leads to a very active pattern. Precipitation over the next two weeks…
A lot of that will be rain, but snow threats will be mixed in there. The GFS Ensembles from WeatherBELL show the snow potential during the same time…
Let’s get back to tracking today’s flakes…

Make it a great day and take care.
The cold air with this storm system was so lousy that most areas couldn’t reach the freezing mark by early this morning–looking a lot like some early spring weather to me!!!
February total: 6.84 inches for the month at the house with a tiny bit to add today and tonight.
not even the slightest snow to be seen …. one or two inch accumulations – huh, kinda missed that prediction!!
He said “possible”, not “likely”.
I honestly think our big snows are long gone till next winter. We’d be lucky to see light accumulating snows. I’m preparing for tornado season and plus I’m ready for spring.
Bust.
I sincerely hope this isn’t a depressing end to winter… more ensembles show no decent snow than one for the next two weeks 🙁
Say it aint so!
Mother nature once again has the last laugh with rain and more lots rain. I’m feeling like another rain drenched Spring to come. ugh
Snowing in Pikeville
Not so accurate weather giving only a couple of days in the foreseeable future with any daytime highs below the 50s. The majority of the highs in the 50s and 60s. I will take that and look forward to it. Even if we get a snow at this point it will vanish fairly quickly. Bring Spring.
I absolutely cannot understand at all what all the whining is about?
Yeah..I know at least most everyone on Kentucky got a good snowstorm or two this winter…you could be a snow lover in Southeast tn. Whose missed out all winter..
I’m thinking most if not all places in Kentucky were at average to above average in snowfall this year. Why the complaining is well beyond me.
The reality is this: KY is not a very snowy state. Most areas, with the exception of higher elevations in East KY, receive 20 inches or less for the annual snow total. We are definitely average or above in about the entire state this winter for snowfall. Also, the last few years have been much better for above average snowfall than most of the 2000s and late 90s, so no complaining here.
The only true disappointment I can personally state is the fact that I thought the southern jet would have been a little more active given the extremely strong El Nino, but it has been trendy stormier as of late!

Thelma Lou is ready for the warmer temps, she was pleased not to wake up & find a coating of snow today. Personally I think we get one more “winter” storm to move through these parts but for the most part I think the transition to Spring is underway.
Welcome to Spring folks! There won’t be anymore snow. Pack away your boots and sled, show’s over!
Never say never, (yes some big time snows happen in march) but…..
Imo, the WeatherBell has shown the same outlook for snow for several weeks (and hasn’t panned out yet).
I have enjoyed this winter when it was cold and snow, but many days have been warm!! Its all good whatever the weather is, I just like my Dec-March to be full of cold and the white stuff.
Bring Spring and warmth, it beats cold rain any day. I just hope we don`t get a really active severe weather season and get a repeat of 1998. http://www.weather.gov/media/lmk/pdf/posters/April_16_1998_Poster.pdf
