Good Tuesday morning to one and all. Let me start off by once again saying thanks for all the wonderful comments and for all those who have followed me over to the new blog. Our little weather community carries on!
Our Monday featured a few rounds of showers and storms that were mainly concentrated across the west and south. Some areas picked up very heavy rainfall to go along with some strong storms. It looks like Monday was the opening act to a stormy next couple of days.
Tuesday will feature another very humid day in the commonwealth. Highs will reach the middle 80s in many areas and showers and thunderstorms will once again go up. It looks like we will be seeing a greater coverage of the rains than we had Monday. Heavy rains will be a concern once again as the atmosphere is loaded with moisture right now. Some of the boomers could also go severe for a time so we will have to be on watch for that possibility.
Wednesday looks to be the day for the area to get a good soaking. Numerous showers and storms will be rolling across the state as a cold front dips into the area and checks up. A little wave of low pressure will try to form along the front and move right over us enhancing the rain potential. It’s a setup that can produce some very heavy rain totals and the models are all over this possibility.
GFS Rainfall Tue/Wed
As you can see… the potential for some very heavy rainfall will be with us here in Kentucky through Wednesday Night. We will have to keep an eye out on the flash flood potential during this time.
Thursday will see improving conditions as sunshine returns to the area with temps that will be in low and middle 80s for highs as humidity levels come down.
The heat ridge that continues to be in the western part of the country will try once again to reach our neck of the woods. That attempt looks rather weak to me… but temps will be fairly normal for this time of year with mid and upper 80s for the weekend. We will also have to keep an eye on some thunderstorm clusters forming to our northwest and rolling southeastward toward the state.
Another front looks to also make a run at us by late weekend or early next week.
Eventually the heat has to get in here for a little bit… right? I guess we will see… but I have a sneaking suspicion it will before this month is over.
This is Bertha…
Hurricane Bertha is a powerful Cat 3 storm with winds of 120mph. This is very rare to have a major hurricane so early in the season and usually portends an active season ahead. It looks like the storm will begin to move more northward in the coming days and may take aim on Bermuda. We will keep watch on this storm and have daily updates.
In addition to the daily weather update blog posts. I hope to get you guys some cool posts about some weather history and some long range outlooks. The long range stuff being a look at the months ahead with MAYBE a little peak toward the fall and winter months. That is of course if you ask nicely!
Updates will be coming as needed on Tuesday so make sure you check back. I also hope to add some new features to the blog as soon as I get a 3rd grader to show me how to write some html code!
Take care.

Good Morning Chris! TG said some really nice things about you on the old blog. You are loved by many, my friend. Thanks for the post but please don’t say those two dreaded H words (heat and hunidity)! I just can’t take summer like I use too! One day you’ll know what all us old people talk about when we talk of summer. LOL!
Pretty Pleas for us crazy people for the fall and winter outlook. For my own personal reasons i would like to know what you see in your crystal ball for 23-26th for north KY and Cincy area
Thanks for the update, Chris…AP is reporting that Bertha may weaken within a few days…your thoughts?
Love the new blog Chris. Thanks so much for all you do for us. I do not post often, but read daily (at least a couple of times). Can we still expect “live blogging” during severe weather?
Thanks for the update Chris….I miss you on WKYT but, now that I’ve caught up with ya, it’s okay. lol Keep up the good work!
any chance of the heavy bands coming any further south into central ky?
Please Chris, tell us what you see in the future. Jackson County Schools has a 3 week Spring Vacation planned. We will make up snow days during that time, but if no snow then we get 3 weeks off. I am praying for no snow days this year, so I am sure we will get the big one. Plus, since you are gone I am sure that the two will combine for one snowy winter. So your outlook will be fun. Have a great day and as always thanks for the blog.
No cap on the atmosphere around here today…look for the storms to go up fast!
Chris and everyone else,
Here is a great link showing Hurricane track models. It shows 15 different models at once and gives a great picture of where the hurricane is going. http://www.sfwmd.gov/portal/page?_pageid=2854,19644915,2854_19644936:2854_19645022:2854_19645029&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL
By the way…Bertha is nothing to be concerned about in the U.S.
Great blog Chris as usual.
BuckeyeFan How do you know bertha wont hit or get close to the us????? Are you saying it wont affect us at all????? Everyone try to stay cool!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Chris great blog as usual!!
Buckeye fan how do ya know Bertha wont affect the us out all?????
Bertha is going east of Bermuda no threat to the US

Thanks for the update, CB. 🙂
Crystal, from the looks of things, Bertha will track to the east of Bermuda. At this point, it would take something dramatic to put the US back in the CONUS. However, people in Bermuda still need to keep an eye on the track of this storm and be prepared JUST IN CASE. I think Bertha is the start of an active hurricane season, especially for the Cape Verde region.
As for the weather today, the kids, dog, and I have been enjoying the lovely sunshine while it lasts. NWS has already reported lightning near the London/Corbin airport so that’s probably a sign of things to come today. Just so long as it doesn’t get as nasty as it did yesterday…we can surely use the rain though!
As of the 11am update, Bertha has weakened. Down to 105 mph now. NHC believes that this trend will continue over the next 24 hours.
Here is a cool picture of Bertha if my link works

Hey Chris!! I’m glad to see this blog up and running!! Sorry I haven’t been around..just going thru some weather mourning. We’ve missed you soo much we can’t even watch WKYT or any weather for that matter!! I have peeked over at WSAZ looking for you. A few days ago we realized how much we will miss you. When the weather was coming on we wouldn’t say , “weather!” we’d say “Chris Bailey!!”. We are having withdrawals!! I found this blog barely in time!!
We just had a nice 10 min. hard rain in Mt. Sterling Jeffersonville area. Hope we get more.

Hey Chris, and everyone! I used to post as plain Joe, but there tended to be others coming in from time to time. Thought this would be a good time to change.
Chris- I am thrilled about this new site! With TG maintaining the WKYT blog, and you on this- I feel like we’ve gained something, rather than losing. Heck, now we have three blogs all together! You can’t beat that.
I hope this one becomes so successful that you will start getting paid for it! 😀
William great minds think alike lol!!!! The wind is picking up in Pikeville.
Actually, I think I like this name even better. With my apologies to coffeelady! 😀
I cant believe nothing is out for the sandy hook moorehead area and west liberty
CB, It’s a shame we had to loose you from WKYT, but we will definately keep up with your new blog. Thank you for staying in touch with everyone here in Central KY!! My 9 year old son think that you and TG hung the moon!! LOL!! We met you a while back in Berea during a parade where you were the Grand Marshall. You were very nice and willing to talk to our son about the weather, in which he seems to be a bit obsessed with but is totally fine with me, and we appreciate your kindness. You also told us to do something in which we never got around to and now you are gone from WKYT. The funny thing was that my son, being the spontanious young boy he is, first asked you before anything else, “Where’s TG?”! We were a bit embarrassed to say the least but you just laughed right along with us as you posed for a picture with him. You two guys are like “Batman and Robin” to him! LOL!!! Thank you for everything! You really have no idea what kind of influence you have been for my son and I am sure that you will continue to influence more of our youth in your new job as you always have here! This is the first time that I have been on your new blog but I bookmarked it and will keep up with it daily with the many others that have followed you! Take care!
Crystal, When you asked me why I said Bertha is not a problem; did you click the link I posted and look at the models? 15 models almost all say Bertha tracks east of Bermuda and then back out to sea. That puts the eye about 1,000 miles from U.S. Far enough to safely say it won’t effect us, don’t you think?
Hey Chris… Why, when I go to wsaz.com, do I see Tony’s weather blog featured prominently, but no mention of a Chris Bailey weather blog? Are they putting your stuff on the back burner?
Currently rain and thunder in Pikeville gimme more gimme more!!!!!!!!
Buckeyefan i see that thanks I am just amazed at hurricanes since i was in one once just a cat 1 but interesting.Good news for the us mainlands.
