Good Wednesday, folks. We are now into the second half of March and true spring is getting closer and closer to arriving. To get there, we are likely to have to go through some big time temperature swings. Those ups and downs will also bring very active weather our way, with thunderstorms and some snowflakes. Basically, it’s Kentucky weather.
A cold front is pressing to our east today with cooler air (still above normal) coming in behind it. Gusty winds can top 35mph at times as skies become partly sunny after a few isolated showers and storms…
Temperatures will continue to slowly drop on Thursday with upper 50s and low 60s for highs. Another push of colder air moves in and could produce a shower or thunderstorm as it does.
This sets the stage for a winter looking setup for the coming weekend. We get colder air pushing in as low pressure develops across the south and tries to work up the east coast. The NAM only goes through Saturday morning and gives us this look…
That implies the chance fro some rain and snow. The GFS agrees with the potential to see some flakes. Instead of taking this as an accumulation map, let’s use it as an illustration of where the GFS has the best chances for seeing some snow…
Overnight lows can hit the 20s Sunday into Monday. With lots of early season buds and blooms out, some issues from the cold will be possible.
Temps rebound quickly by the middle of next week, when we could hit 70 again. That’s followed by another drop…
If we look long range into week two, we are likely to find a continuation of the active pattern with spring fighting with a blocky looking pattern. The end result in this type of setup can be some wild weather across the country.
The models indicate that as we head into the final week of March. It’s way out there, but interesting to see this type of air mass clash…
That’s wicked and produces this type a system…
I’m showing you this because it’s indicating what I’ve been thinking… That the overall pattern over the next several weeks takes on another extreme look across the country.
Make it a great Thursday and take care.
So now I am really confused is it Wednesday or Thursday?
If those last maps indicate severe weather, Thelma Lou doesn’t want any part of it!
Thanks Chris. NOT looking forward to snow showers or temps cold enough to even entertain them, but I guess if they come we will deal with them. Its funny that Sunday is the first day of Spring, but we will be dressing for winter. Oh well, as you said, Chris typical Kentucky weather! Today is beautiful though. So I will take that.
Have a great Hump Day everyone!
I have a redbud tree in my front yard about to pop, plus I saw a dogwood on I-75 south just past exit 76. Who knows which “winter” it is, lol.
I’m too far North for any trees, etc. that I can see to entertain thoughts of “popping” yet, but otherwise it looks and feels like April outside today. I.e., nice!
