Good Sunday everyone. Our weekend is wrapping up on a brighter note across the bluegrass state as the sun makes a return visit. This follows up a few rounds of snow giving winter lovers a taste of what they have been missing. The Saturday clipper was an overachiever with several spots getting more than 3″ of the white stuff. I couldn’t be happier with how the past week of weather played out in regards to the forecast we had out.
How does the week ahead look? In a word… changeable.
A plains storm system takes shape on Monday and this storm heads toward the Great Lakes by late Tuesday into Wednesday. There is some serious arctic air across the northern plains, but this storm will only tap a chunk of this and bring it in here by the middle of the week.
This type of setup will cause our temps to spike into the 40s on Monday as clouds increase and some late day showers work in. Tuesday is the day of change as the cold front works in from the northwest. Take a look at how the GFS sees this…
Showers will be around for most of Tuesday with a switch to snow showers a good bet from west to east by late in the day into the evening hours. Much colder air works in behind the front and this may cause some snow showers and flurries to carry us into early Wednesday. Temps on Wednesday may not get out of the 20s for some areas.
The European Model also gives you a good look at the mid week cold shot…
You can clearly see how the mother load of brutal air in the northern tier into Canada barely budges. That next low in the plains on Friday may send a streak of some light snow our way before some milder air moves in by next weekend.
We are now at the halfway point of winter and I will be focusing on the second half with updates over the next few days. It has to get better… right? 😉
Have a great Sunday and take care.
After walking the poochies, it seems my estimation was wrong and we got a a little less than three inches in north Rich, based on the neighborhood.
Good call on this system and is far as the second half of winter, no worries CB, since most here would probably prefer warmer and rainy to the little snows anyway 🙂
We are hoping that CB’s second half of winter is filled with lots of snow and cold! We sure enjoyed the beauty of the snow this weekend in Lex and G-town!
Well some of the models have begun backing off the blow torch end of month
Once again, if it isn’t going to snow……the please do bring on the warmer temperatures! Looking forward to seeing what you think the second half of winter will bring!
I guess I’m going to enjoy the small snow today, it sure is beautiful on everything!!!!
The “bottled-Up” cold in Canada is just a tease, warm air looks to keep pushing up from Mexico and just will not let this be a good winter for cold/snow. We can hope that maybe down the road we will get one good week of a BIG SNOW ….
Go Packers and Texans!!!
good sunday and in some places snowy morning from the town of wayne, wva. we got a little sugar coating of snow, a little less than we got for friday morning/ currently the temp is in the mid 20s, about normal for the time of year, with a stray flurry from time to time. looks like the big sandy area down into the coal fields were the winners with this 1 with some coming in with as much as 3 to 4 inches of over achieving snow.looks like this clipper ate its wheaties…….lol!!!!!!
looks like an up and down rest of the month in the weather dept. per most of the models. then it looks like a more prlonged period of cold and snowy weather may set in for feb. and march and possibly april. what about snow on easter this year? heck what about mothers day? i said all the nice weather we had for dec. and the first few days of jan. may come back to bite us and well, it looks like our spring may be dalayed this year or may not even have a spring this year. we shall see.
all this has something to do with the stratospheric warming over the poles, the current cold shot we just came out of would argue for it. when it is warming over the poles you tend to have cold shots into the us. most of the winter it has been cooling over the poles and thus has led to a warm start to winter with no blocking. the last cold shot there was some warming but not a lot which would explain the 2 or 3 day of cold this past week. now the poles are cooling again and that would explain for the warmups we are about to go through up and down the rest of the month.
the poles are forecast to be warmer, much warmer than they have been all winter by feb. if not before then and as a result will create blocking and thus creates a period of snow and cold for feb and march and maybe some of april. this also works in the summer but it works the exact opposite than in winter…
some of you more experienced mets out there might want to shed some light on this along with chris, him self. i am only trying to get people to under stand the weather a little more. feel free to correct me if i am wrong. thanks for reading and god bless.
Well, we missed out on yesterdays snow. We did get a good snow shower about 4, but that was it. I just wish the weather woudl either get cold and stay that way for a few weeks, or stay warmer. This yo yo stuff is driving me crazy.
We actually need some cold weather, snowy or not, to help kill out viruses, and pests that attack crops. OF course, I would like personally, to see a couple of great big snows, as would most of us who are here every winter.
Chris, I hope you second half of winter thoughts does include some hope for us snow lovers. If not, at least, I hope it does include some cold weather so that nature doesnt try to wake up the trees and things too early, like a couple of years ago. Seventy and eighty degree weather in February is just wrong in these parts!
Everyone have a great Sunday. Thanks, Chris, for all you do. IT is appreciated. Looking forward to the next update, as usual.
missed out on the snow once again in middlesboro… I hope we get one before this winter is over but who knows?? just wondering since this has been a mild winter does this mean we will have a hot summer?
Seems we got the sweet spot here with nearly 3″. It’s beautiful out there this morning.
It was a virga snow in western KY yesterday. So frustrating to see the radar showing snow but nothing at the surface. At this point, I’m hoping for one good snow, just one 4″+ snow that we have fun tracking for a few days and then actually delivers!!!
A sole skimmer is a waste
An ankle biter look pretty, plus can at least be used for mini snowmen and flat bottom sleigh riding
A shin kicker covers all bases 🙂
A knee knocker now seems extinct like the dodo bird, but we do have historic record of their existence 🙂
Darth Bubba can use his helmet to sled on ankle biters 🙂
Weeeeeee!

Hope that trike has three wheel drive…LOL…
Metro Lou. just missed out on the heavy snow band that set up. Ended up with about 1/4 to 1/2 inch on deck.
Check out the GFS eight days out…..Looks like a thumping! To bad it won’t happen.

You beat me to it, lol…would’t that be soo nice?!? I do agree with BG, in that the pattern is ripe for one if not two or three big snowstorms before winter is over. I do think spring lovers wont be very happy with mother nature this year, as I suspect the cold/snow will linger into April. Winter is FAR from over folks!
Final measurement in Southern Pike County, 5 1/2 inches of snow!
I too hope the second half of winter brings some snow. I did enjoy the drive home from work late last night. The snow was beautiful. Today my only goal is to watch the game and fire up the wood stove.
GO PACK GO!
Everyone have a great day!
Come on Spring..! BBQ, cornhole, baseball, swimming… I can’t wait…
Well, it will likely feel like spring next week (the week of the 23rd)…major warm up across the east as the big trough becomes re-established in the west. Would not be surprised to push above 60 for several days that week.
Great week to head to New Orleans for AMS! Won’t be missing any wintry weather.
I just saw where JKL is forecasting sunny/62*!! next sunday for my area here in s.ky…
Spring has been here since fall. This entire winter has had a spring vibe to it. Nice warm days with a chill at night and frequent rains. I don’t see the pattern changing anytime soon either.
Cold snaps might get more frequent with the chance of weekly storms rolling through. We are bound to hit one of them with the cold air in place.
THINK SNOW!!!
Yeah all these people wishing for weather we have been having. We went straight from fall to spring
And due to a lack of sustained freezing temps, bugs will be back with a vengeance.
Lake frozen behind the house, mild winters do not allow that to happen, trust me folks Feb-March will have some winter weather, if you think we are going to have a early spring, I would bet lots of money we don’t!
actually think many of us are much warmer than the 40’s Mon-Tue. ECMWF handled the warm spike ahead of the new years front very well. low to mid 60’s very possible across southern KY Tuesday afternoon with rising temps Monday night.
I sure hope Februrary/March turn out more wintery that what we’ve seen so far…
Can’t be much more mild and snowless than it has already been
I think the roller coaster ride is going to continue all the way into May. Maybe a couple of snowfalls only to be melted by the warmer air within a day or two. Forget reliving 1978. This season is shot.
I wouldn’t quite say forget 78 yet. I remember that winter quite well as I lived in SW Ohio at the time. That winter was mild and rainy all the way up until the night the NWS issued the Blizzard warnings. People that can remember, recall winter of 93′ Remember that winter it was mild and virtually snow-less and then come March….STORM OF THE CENTURY hit. At that time I lived here in Keavy and we had just over 32″ of snow. Though my family in Ohio had NONE!! The weather pattern this winter has been very similar to those 2 winters that we ended up with a major blizzard. This winters pattern is making me wonder if we may just be in stored for something big before Spring settles in. Anyone else recalls the winter weather them 2 winters, 78′ & 93′
I not saying a Blizzard is impossible but a long extended cold spell with snow laying on the ground for weeks seems to be a distant memory.
i remember the blizzard of 93 well !!! lived here in barbourville then. it was an awesome storm
I believe the winter or 78 actually had snow in december.
The blizzard of ’78 was January 25th thru 27th, and it didn’t snow in January until that very day, and it was awesome. I remember it very well, cause I had a heck of a time getting home, and then I couldn’t get out!!
I don’t know when the blizzard occurred but I was born in dec. 77 and mom said there was snow on the ground. Don’t know how much but I live in se ky so that may be why.
I was in High School at that time and the Blizzard was so bad that we were out of school from January 25th till the first half of March. We then went to school 6 days a week till the end of June. I lived in Fairfield, Ohio at the time and if memory recalls, we had over 40″ of snow and the snow drifts measured as high as 2 stories high. The snow that was plowed on the roads were as high as the telephone poles. The local schools had drifts so high that some of the schools couldn’t find their entrance doors until the end of February. We had severe thunderstorms the night that the blizzard moved in and everything froze to ice in a matter of minutes. It was awesome! Would love another repeat of that BLIZZARD of 78′
I would love to have a foot snow but I don’t know about those snow drifts. Doesn’t sound fun and I don’t think I could make it without electricity for a prolonged period. I bet it was awesome though. 🙂 I remember the record cold of 94, that was something else as well as the ice storm.
Yeah, this winter is far from over. All that cold air in Canada, just building even more by the day. February is going to be brutal, and then in March someone east of the Mississippi is going to be slammed with snow. This next decade may be like the 90’s, if you haven’t noticed, we get a series of bad winters every other decade. 50’s, 70’s, 90’s…….
i keep telling you guys that we will pay the piper for all the nice weather. early spring? forget about it. it aint a happening. snow on easter? very good possibility…..snow on mothers day…….again, don’t laugh til the time gets here and if it does not happen you can laugh then. i remember chris saying last year that he did not mind snow if it was in the right season for it and he loves winter as much as anyone but only when winter is winter and not in the spring, well my friend chris, you may be saying that alot this tear before this winter is over………thanks for reading what a weather wannabee has to say about the wonderful world of weather. god bless.
If the giants can beat the pack,,,then surely anything is possible for some more winter weather
77/78 winter had temps below freezing and some below zero for weeks. Have pics of a frozen Ohio river. School was out for weeks…
Don’t see that happen this year.
Past four winters, excluding last year, in the Metro Lou. we had under 2 in of snow at the mid point. Ended up average to above average each year. The snow will come!
I hope!!!!
THINK SNOW!!
Scientific American is taking a crack at explaining why we have been abandoned by Winter and snow. The article is fascinating, but had NO mention of the Jefferson County Snow Dome! For what its worth:
