Good Thursday everyone. Our heat wave should max out today before retreating for the weekend as showers and thunderstorms take over. This has been a nice little battle between the storms and heat over the past few days, but the storms should win the weekend battle.
Highs today will again push well into the 90s across the state. Humidity levels continue to run crazy high with dewpoint temps near 80 once again. Add these two together and you get heat index temps in the danger category. It will feel like 105 to 115 for many areas with a few spots pushing 120.
A word of caution about today… we will need to watch for showers and thunderstorms going up a little quicker than the past few days. This would mean some areas do not get as hot as the forecast suggests. These storms can briefly go severe and contain tropical downpours that lead to minor flooding.
The thunderstorm action will be kicking into high gear from Friday into the coming weekend. This is a period that we need to watch out for as the air will continue to be loaded with juice. Flash flooding issues will be possible on a bit of a broader scale compared to the past few days.
Take a look at the weekend rain numbers from the GFS…
That is a pretty robust signal for heavy rains and something to watch for. Temps will come down during this time as the increase in clouds and storm action does its thing.
The threat for frequent showers and thunderstorms will continue through the rest of the month into early August. Here is the two week rainfall forecast from the GFS…
This is one of those rare hot and stormy summers. The good news is I still think August looks to be a much milder month. As always… time will tell. ![]()

I sure hope we get rain. The last rain forecast model was a bust for Nicholasville and South Lexington. We amy have gotten a small shower that really did nothing. Just hot and nasty!
Thanks Chris! Everyone take care of your pets and the elderly and try to stay cool.
That is what is wrong with showing those models in a pattern like this. It will only be right for some, not all, and there will always be the spot that gets missed everytime. Check out the NEXRAD 30 and 60 day % of normal.

Chris, this is one of those ‘step outside and wring yourself out’ kind of days….a note of reminder…please make sure to see that your indoor and outdoor pets have pelnty of water available. This heat effects them as well as us. And check on your elderly neighbors. (Thanks for letting me do the ad, Chris!) 😉 have a great day, all, ans stay cool!
MUCH NEEDED HEAVY RAIN is falling in Barbourville!!!
The rain and clouds going to save us from the heat today. Or most of the day at least, I’m sure it’ll clear off and get hot at some point this afternoon but for now were good:)
Here…think cool thoughts…like Seattle’s cooler than normal summer. Wish we could trade places with them for just a week…

I would move there in a heartbeat. I hate anything above 70f and humdity. I know they do get warmer then this year, but know they are still a lot cooler than us and less humid.

I SWEAR it is about to rain in Richmond. The sky is teasing us.
Been a nice rainy COOLER day here in knox co. AC got a break today with temps. In the 70’s with rain/fog.
Ok………so WHEN IS THE WINTER FORCAST haha, not liking this much heat lol 🙂 hopefully 8 short weeks until FALL!!!!
Warmer than normal temps are expected to last through Oct. Might as well get used to it. It’s only going to keep getting worse. Greenhouse effect is happening.

I was in Seattle for 9 days in June during Kentucky’s first heat wave. The weather was wonderful.
In Lawrenceburg, this July is now equally as wet as last year. We’ve gotten over 5″ of rainfall with a week and a half to go. Extreme heat AND plentiful rainfall….very odd indeed! Heat index at my house topped out at 115 yesterday, not quite there today.
According to who? NOAA doesn’t agree, Chris doesn’t agree, not sure I do either. Just curious where you saw that this is “expected”? It’s definitely hot out there right now.
That was not intentional by the NHC Forecaster who wrote that discussion. No way, no how. 😉
this was supposed to be a front loaded summer or a reverse summer meaning that most of the hottest weather is to happen in the first mont to month and a half and so far that has been the case. even chris thinks that august will be more mild than hot and also wetter. as always time will tell.
