Good Wednesday everyone and welcome to the HEAT WAVE. Today into Thursday will mark the worst part of this latest round of heat before thunderstorms try to take control by Friday into the weekend.
Temps today and Thursday will soar well into the 90s as the heat index values reach the danger category for the entire region. Dewpoint temps today and Thursday are going to climb close to 80 degrees for some. Put the temp and the high humidity levels together and the heat index will be anywhere from 105- 115 for much of the state at times today and again Thursday.
This is stuff you don’t want to mess so take plenty of breaks and drink a lot of water if you must be outside for an extended period of time. It is also a good time to check on the elderly or those less fortunate to make sure they have the proper means to stay cool.
We will still see an isolated thunderstorm or two going up today and Thursday. We should not see the coverage we had over the past few days. Any storm that blows up will be a big rainer and put down a lot of water in a small window of time. This has been the calling card of the storms of late and is something to watch out for with such a moisture laden airmass.
The threat for showers and thunderstorms will really ramp up Friday into the coming weekend and this should knock the temps down several degrees. This is also a time to watch for pulse severe storms and the potential for torrential rains that cause high water issues.
Back to where we are today. Here is everything you need to watch the bluegrass bake and to track any storm action…

That was an awful electrical storm in Frankfort yesterday. Stop lights are still flashing. We had many big limbs down, and I even got one blown in my front yard and I have no trees!
My mammoth sunflowers were blown over as well, but we were able to save most of them I hope.
Power went out off and on about 15 times where I was at in Frankfort. Luckily it stayed on. Unfortunately I think it may have messed my fridge up. Also, it messed my alarms up and made me late this morning.
Never want to have a storm like that again. That storm ended up affecting more people in my part of town than those massive storms we had with the tornado outbreaks earlier this year.
Thanks for the great website!
Heat wave…YUK!!! Everyone take it easy out there. Please don’t forget your outdoor pets and livestock. Make sure they have shade and clean water.
This has to be as close to a tropical rain forest as it ever gets in KY. Whats next, anacondas?? 🙁
LOL…that was funny, true, but funny, btw, anyone know what “pulse” thunderstorms are? Is that the same as “pop up” thunderstorms?
I think it is similar, but pulse means they aren’t expected to last very long. A pulse storm is one that is pretty strong or severe, but is very short lived. Hence, the term “pulse.”
A pulse storm is where the storm pulses up and down in strength rather quickly (10-15 minutes). During the period of strength, you can get downbursts, damaging winds hail. The storm then fades for 10-15 minutes and then re-strengthens again.
Wow! Max CAPE at 6000 J/KG!
Hmmmm… Flip flops shorts and heatwave!!! Vs. Coats boots and blizzard warnings!!
My vote is for blizzard warnings & boots!
No coat???
Hard to think about a coat in this weather…
Isn’t it amazing that it is not only cooler, but less humid in Florida than it is here. YUK!
Thanks MJ! I didn’t realize that it cycled like that. Good to know.
