Good Monday everyone and welcome to a wild week of weather here in the commonwealth. We have a major heat wave moving in for much of the week. The wild card in it all will be the increasing threat for showers and thunderstorms. This could end up being one heck of a battle between the heat and the storms.
This heat wave is a national headline maker as it impacts millions and millions of people from the plains to the east coast. For our region… the hottest air is going to settle into the western half of the state from Tuesday into the upcoming weekend. Central and eastern parts of the bluegrass state will get in on the sultry air… but it is likely to be blunted some by showers and thunderstorms.
The daily impact from these storms will vary depending on where the boomers decide to crank up on a given day. Storms that go up will have a lot of moisture to work with and should be efficient rain producers that can cause some local high water issues.
The storm threat will be with us today into Tuesday when we have to be watching for something a bit more organized moving in. Tuesday may end up being fairly stormy and this period can produce some severe storms.
The models are becoming pretty robust with the storm chances over the next week. Look at how the GFS ramps up the rainfall in the coming days…

The models really ramp up the threat for heavy rain producing thunderstorms over the next 7 days and this will have a big impact on our temps.
Any day that features mainly sunshine and dry weather where you live can produce temps well into the 90s with a heat index of 100-110. Again… the best chance for seeing those types of numbers will be in the west and that is the area that can see those types of readings for several days in a row. That is not saying the rest of the region won’t see temps that high… it’s just the threat for showers and storms will be much greater allowing for cooler readings.
Let’s get the heat vs storms period started off with all the tracking toys you need…

I will have updates as needed and will also have some quickie thoughts via twitter. Have a great Monday and take care.

Thanks again, Chris. The local Mets here in Cincy agree that today and Tuesday could be stormy, but think that the rain faucet will be pretty much shut off starting Wednesday through the rest of the week.
Wish we could share our rain with the folks down to the South and Southwest…
So I just get my electric bill, right? It’s 195 dollars for 28 days. The kilowatt hrs on my bill said it was read on 7/15/2011 and were 84564. So I got out to check (three days later mind you) and the kilowatt hours on my meter are 83757. This happens all the time with my electric bill. I don’t know if they point the device and it goes to another house or what. It’s a pretty substantial difference. It will ultimately be corrected on the next read I hope.
Was really hoping for another storm… but looks like that one is going through Versailles. Will watch for a MCS tomorrow…

Chris, I have a question that’s been bugging me for several years now.
How is that the weather service can issue a tornado warning and the SPC not automatically issue a tornado watch for the area? What’s the thought process behind this? If the conditions are right to generate a tornado warning seems to me a watch is obviously warranted.
