Good Friday everyone. We are ending this work week and kicking off our weekend with the return of muggy air and some showers and thunderstorms. This is a trend that should carry us through the weekend as a heat wave threatens to grip much of the country for next week. Yes… that includes us. ![]()
Juicy air is moving back into the region today and this will ramp up the chances for scattered showers and thunderstorms. We have a nice little pipeline of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico into the state, so any storm that goes up will be able to put down a lot of rain in a short amount of time.
The best chance for rain today will be across the south and southeast, but that chance slowly lifts northward as the day goes by. This will cause some issues with the temp forecast as readings will vary greatly with the whole sun verses clouds and rain thing. Outside of clouds and rain… temps will hit the mid and high 80s. With those two… readings may stay under 80.

Rainfall Since Midnight
Showers and thunderstorms will continued to be scattered about the region into the coming weekend. Similar temps to today will be noted as we continue with a very tropical feel.
As this is taking place… the heat dome across the plains states is going to be growing and looks to flex some muscle into next week as it expands all the way to the east coast. This has the look of a major heat wave for much of the country and that is very likely to put us into something similar to what we had earlier this week.
Watch the heat expand eastward on the European Model…
That would amount to ridiculous heat for the plains states into the upper midwest with 100 or better for many states. That has a shot to include parts of Kentucky if this works out as forecast.
The other thing I am watching for this time will be another massive spike in the humidity. The GFS is forecasting dewpoint temps around 80 degrees again for the middle of the week…
Wednesday
If all the ingredients come together next week as the models are showing… this could be a memorable heat wave for millions of americans.
I will have updates as needed today and into the weekend. Have a great Friday and take care.

Wake me up in September.
Sept.- Nov.- Best three months of year. True Story.
Seems like these heat spells are getting longer and hotter. The “cool” spells getting warmer and shorter. Oh well, it is summer after all!
Not good. My kids have band camp the next couple of weeks. :\
Heat and high humidity….sounds like the perfect combination for slow moving t-storms, and even more humidity! My prescription…..find a good cool pool, and visit it as often as possible! 😉
Thanks, Chris. Appreciate all that you do!
Ooh! That’s tough! I know because I had to endure the heat for 7 years during band camps. Hope they can do some inside. Keep them hydrated!
“one time, at band camp….” Sorry couldn’t resist.
I noticed a 116 degree reading near Booneville on the Mesonet site.
Either there’s a temperature glitch, which most likely occurred, or maybe there was a heat burst nearby. That would be cool.
I agree. I think September-October is the usually the best weather time around here.
From Jackson:
THIS SHOULD BE OUR LAST SHOT OF RAIN FOR A WHILE AND
WILL HELP THE GARDENS. EXPECT YOU MIGHT BE WATERING THEM BY THE END
OF NEXT WEEK.
Did they really write that? If so… thats silly as we will have scattered storms into Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.
That would of been cool, but, not heat burst there. Graphs show weak winds when it happened. I’m thinking temp glitch because the graph shows a flat line temp on the bottom and the dewpoint with it. Would of been very cool though.
