11:30pm Update
A round of thunderstorms is rolling across central and eastern Kentucky and this is not associated with the squall line out west. This line is producing 60mph winds and large hail across western Ky right now and will continue to roll eastward overnight.
I am expecting watches to be extended farther east with time and I will get those online as they come out. Take care.
Previous Update
Good late Sunday evening. The long night of severe weather is now underway with a TORNADO WATCH out for much of western Kentucky until 2am. Here’s a look at the counties included in the watch…
Here’s a look at the current warnings…
Tornadoes, damaging winds and large hail will be possible in the watch area. I fully expect additional weather watches to be issued farther east into central and possibly eastern Kentucky later tonight.
Radars, current conditions and cams are at the top of the page. Those will help you track the storms in from the west and southwest. Be sure to follow my twitter feed for rapid fire thoughts and the latest warnings.
I will update as needed… take care.
Thanks Chris for keeping us informed!!! I’ll be checking this site regularly throughout the night.
Keep the updates coming Chris. Definitely looking like a rough night.
I dislike tornado weather, but glad it isn’t snow or ice . Hopefully spring is around the corner. Keep the snow away .
Bad stuff appears north of what was expected at this point. West TN, West Ky?????
Been following the skywarn spotters network in Arkansas.
Being a trained spotter, it’s frustrating to hear reports from the field of ‘heavy winds or coin size hail’. I could even sense frustration in the one handling the reports.
Spotters need to provide specific details such as hail size (penny size, golf-ball size), etc…and estimate of wind speeds.
I’ll be tuning into the west Ky area before too long and Memphis as well.
Woodford county just had a burst of rain with thunder and lightning.
What are yoir thoughts for E KY. I am not in slight risk for sever weather so is SPC expectingit to weaken out before it gets this far east. I am in Hazard area does anyone know abouw what time to expect the storms. Any replies apprectiated
Thunderstorm in Mercer Co caused power to flicker out for a minute. The dog is pacing. He hates storms. Have a feeling between the dog pacing and watching the weather unfold to protect the family will keep me up tonight. Stay safe and aware everyone!
Storms starting here in sw Lexington. Heavy rain, thunder.
I just lost my satellite (Dish ) with 33 seconds left in the giants/49 ers game. Must be really thick cloud cover. What an amazing winter.
Overtime.
Just got it back. Thanks.
Anyone just see on radar where that squall line out west just had another one develop just in front of it and then doubled in size when it merged together? Forgive me for what I am sure is incorrect terminology but that was wild just seeing that on radar!
Do you all think the severe line of thunderstorms will weaken overnight?
I do.
Pretty intense lighting and thunder in Lex. West Ky looks like it is going to get strafed.
Yes it does.
Thunder and lightening I’m Louisville .
Thunder and light rain at Clay’s Ferry.
i think it will loose alot of its punch before it gets to east ky..
Nasty stuff out to the west.Everybody west ofI-65 better have eyes wides shut (joke) tonight. Thank you, Eli Manning.
We live on the second floor of an apartment building with no interior hallways outside of the apartment. The stairwells are all exposed to the outside. In the event of a tornado where is the safest place to go? The bathtub or outside under a stairwell? Never had to think about it since we moved here and just curious, thanks!!
In good fun, can’t wait to see what Chris has to say if the SPC decides not to extend the watch eastward. Given a line with a history of damage and the timing of the event, they must have high confidence in the weakening trend not to put a watch out as a precaution.
Bedtime here in cent. Ky…no watch from spc…thanks for nuttin’…glad I have Bailey keeping me informed…be safe all.
Hearing some rumbles of thunder here in Ashland, but no rain yet…
