Good Friday to one and all. We have come to the end of another active week of weather across the bluegrass state. The past week has been fairly wild with everything from severe thunderstorms to ice. This winter stinks for snow lovers… but it sure isn’t lacking in the interesting department.
Colder air is filtering into the region today as our big rain maker works to our northeast. The air may be just cold enough for a little bit of rain and snow mix early today for a few areas. Temps should fall into the upper 30s and low 40s early and hold nearly steady all day long. Follow the precipitation and temps by clicking on the radar and current conditions links at the top of the page.
We have a couple of fast-moving systems set to impact our weather this weekend. The first arrives on the scene early Saturday with gusty winds and a line of rain and snow showers zipping through. There could be a touch of some sleet with this one. Here’s how the GFS sees this…
Temps will spike into the upper 30s ahead of this fast-moving front and then drop a few degrees once it swings through here.
Another fast mover will be inbound on Sunday and will bring more gusty winds and a few snow showers and flurries. The best chance to pick up a small accumulation would be across the north and northeast… especially later in the day. The GFS shows this region as being closest to the main shield of light snow…
We will see temps begin to mild up for the first half of next week with 50s likely again by Tuesday. This will be ahead of another system that works in with some rain for the middle of the week.
The end of next week is showing some signs of trying to get a storm going across the east. The GFS has been locked onto this for a few days now…
The European Model has something similar trying to cut off around here into next weekend…
Yes, I know how this winter is going and how the chance of that actually working out in our favor is low. I get it… but this is a weather site and looking ahead is what we do. 🙂
Have a great Friday and take care.
chris i am sorry but i just wish this winter was over i don’t get excited to read the blog anymore never thought that i would ever say that…..
Agreed but still appreciate your updates 🙂
Well I love reading the blog no matter what weather’s out there – even in the boring summer months when we’re about to hit our 14th consecutive day of “upper 80s with a chance of storms.” CB…you keep doing what you do, man. I love this blog year-round. There’s more to weather than just snow.
WKYT’s Todd Borak hinted about an upcoming change in the pattern, but when Bill pressed him to be more specific, Todd said, “I’m out of time!” In the next segment he said he thought cold air would be moving in due to a shift of high pressure. He had that look of “don’t make me deliver bad news”. I guess he doesn’t know that predicting cold and snow would make a lot of you happy!
My concern is ICE.
All this rain moving over us, week after week. Imagine if there was cold air on the surface. It would not be good. 🙁
I wonder what the record is for most days in the 50’s in January…?
Wes: Good Question!
For Lexington–January days of 50+ highs
2012 has had 12
1989, 1990 and 2006 had 17
We won’t beat 17, so no record.
For Lexington–January days of 60+ highs
2012 has had 3
2006 had 6
1974 had 10.
Yes, this winter has been puny but apparently, we have had worse!
Maybe is just seems like more! Thanks for sharing. We still have February and March so I’m still holding out for some accumulating snows…
*it
So hey… I have a question now! In 2006…which apparently this January is similar to… what was February and March like?
Great question Jeanette!! I hope some one can answer that. Mother Nature has been a huge disappointment this winter for sure!! I just want 1 GOOD snow,,, enough to make snow angels,,, is that too much to ask for from her??? lol
February had average temps; March about 1 degree above average, April 4 degrees above average.
There were a couple of small snows (2-4) inches in February and one 2 inch snow in March.
Partly based on memory, the rest on old issues of Weatherwise, KY and TN had more or less normal temps in Feb/March 2006 – of course no guarantee 2012 will be likewise.
Hope this isn’t a bad omen, but April 2006 had devastating severe wx, including the Gallatin TN tornado. Keeping in mind the hefty dose of twisters January 2012 has already given us, the next few months may need to be of big concern, if the Gulf stays abnormally warm and juicy, and La Niña and jet stream patterns remain favorable.
Looks like a good week to head on down to Florida! Florida in February, yes please 🙂
Thanks, Chris. Yeah it stinks for us snow lovers, but, what can you do? It is what it is. Just at least, please tell mother nature to let us at least SEE some snow falling, and to not blow us all away with spring storms. 🙂
Have a great Friday, everyone.
I have a interesting fact from last years winter, The last decent snow fell on Feb 7th. Last December thru Jan was very snowy with 27in plus here in Frankfort, but Feb thru march, little if any snow fell here in Frankfort area?
(I kept a daily snowfall log last year so know this is pretty accurate.)
Late snows this winter seems logical after the early snow’s of last year, KY is known for this kind of flip flopping??
So would tht be snow for eky thursday night? Tv mets show high of 49 for then
Feb is looking a bit colder 🙂
well since winter has decided to NOT do its thing this yr…we might as well take a trip down memory lane and watch some historic footage of the “superstorm 93″….

A very young John Bolaris. he’s still a tv met in philly.
Mitch…your long range thoughts for the rest of the winter, are rather depressing if your a snowlover…by far this winter is one I hope we dont soon repeat.
Ahh, back when the weather channel was actually good.
LIKE
36 degrees in Frankfort, BELOW NORMAL :)!!!!
We’ve heard it all before.. but the GFS model is making next weekend look very interesting. It says “don’t count Winter out yet”.
Yep… I thought so too. And middle of Feb temps as it is right now…look wonderful. But..we shall see what we shall see 😉
I have patience. 😀
as interesting and consistent as the ice you talked about
It will be a cold rain here next week. Why would you even look at the GFS a week out. Throw the models out the window and now cast. I know we still have plenty of winter left, but time is not on our side and the warm air will start winning out here real soon. Just don’t see it this year. Plenty of moisture, but no cold!!!!
THINK SNOW!!!
Wxman would tht be snow for eky thur night?
