Good Monday everyone and welcome to a scorcher of a day. The temps will steal the show today as the threat for showers and thunderstorms ramps up over the next several days. The boomers will do their thing and kick the heat out of here by mid week.
Let’s break down where things are going…
– Temps today will range from 90-95 in most areas with western Kentucky heading toward the mid and upper 90s.
– High humidity levels will boss the heat index close to 100 for much of central and eastern Kentucky. Dangerous heat index levels of 110-115 will be likely out west. Don’t mess with a day like this and be sure to take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water.
– We do have a shot at some scattered storms this afternoon into the evening. A few could be strong. This can have an impact on temps.
– A much better threat for showers and storms will be with us Tuesday into Wednesday. There is a ton of instability available for these storms and we will have to watch for some severe weather.
– Temps on Tuesday will be hot once again with low 90s outside of any storm action.
– A cold front moving through here Wednesday will knock temps back down to normal readings for the rest of the week.
– The overall pattern for the middle and end of July will feature the major heat from the plains into the west. It will continue to make a few runs at us… just like we have seen all summer. The threat for rounds of thunderstorms looks good as well. Here is how things look to me…

That is basically a continuation of the pattern we have been in. The real differences across the country show up with some cooler shots of air diving into the east toward the end of the month and a much wetter pattern for the southeastern states.
Let’s get to today’s edition of the heat and storm tracker…

Today’s Highs
I will have updates as needed so check back. Have a great Monday and take care.

I notice Cincinnati is under and excessive heat warning with heat index values up to 104, which is pretty much the same as the special weather statement for Lexington. Western KY is under a heat advisory, and I’m sure western KY is going to be quite a bit warmer/hotter than Cincy.
Chicago about to get hit with severe storm.
Watching it on Wrigley Field web cam
Time is 9:00am; if you get a chance to see it, storm will be there between 9:10am and 9:25am edt.

The criteria for an Excessive Heat Warning must be different for Cincinnati than, say, Louisville. I wonder if Lexington is large enough of a city to be considered for an Excessive Heat WArning should the Heat Index be forecasted to be high enough.
Wrigley’s view did not look too bad except for a few garbage cans rolling around.
O’Hare airport 63 mph wind gust
Midway airport 75 mph wind gust

Check out the dew points on the mesonet! 70s and 80s across the entire state, that’s as humid as the air down in the tropics. Take it easy out there folks.
The air temp here in Owensboro is 91 as of 10:57. Heat index is already at 108. Needless to say, we are under an excessive heat warning.
Does anyone know why the Shelby County mesnoet station is not showing up?
Over 600,000 in Chicago without power (may have been at its peak); 1 fatality in Cutlerville MI, serious damage in western Michigan.
I was just noticing that myself! Not very often you see dew points in the 80’s around here!
Some sort of technical difficulties. It hasn’t reported since Friday.
Holy S*@t, it’s hot!!!!
Heat index in Owensboro is now 116 at 1:12 local time.
I love the hot weather, but even this is a bit much for me. It is stifling out there. It even makes it hard to breathe. I feel sorry for those working outside today in this heat. I am thankful to be inside in the a/c today.
Heat index in Louisville as of 20 minutes ago was 114. Right now according to the Weather Channel iPhone app the heat index in Shelbyville is 107.
Rack that. Wouldn’t you just love to be a road worker, or roofer, etc. on days like this.
Wow, those dewpoints are sky high!
Almost feel envious for the folks in Central Ohio getting hit by that “massive severs storm complex”, although I could certainly do without the wind damage.
I’m watching some guys mowing outside now and they look m-i-s-e-r-a-b-l-e.
SNOW BABY!!! SNOW!!!!! 🙂
Finally someone else looking forward to WINTER!!!
YES!!!!! we need some
Hey tornadolarkin have any thoughts about the upcoming winter?
