Good Tuesday everyone. Our weather is about to take a walk on the wintry side and we get things started off with some wet snow late tonight into Wednesday. This may even leave behind a small, slushy accumulation for some areas. Some slush even sounds good about right now, doesn’t it?
A weak area of low pressure will zip across the Tennessee Valley early Wednesday and will throw moisture northward into the region. This will start out as a touch of light rain and snow overnight, but should become mainly light snow by daybreak Wednesday.
You can see the juice with this system on the GFS…
Here’s what that same model run thinks falls in the way of snow…
I actually like the look of that map. Keep in mind we will see a lot of melting flakes and any accumulation would mainly be confined to grassy and elevated surfaces.
The NAM snowfall map is a bit more ramped up in the east…
The snow will taper off from west to east Wednesday afternoon and evening with a few flurries lingering into Wednesday night.
A seasonal chill will be with us for Thursday ahead of an arctic front that should arrive by Friday evening and night. This will, at least, have a band of light snow with it with snow showers and flurries behind it into Saturday. The GFS Ensembles really show how strong this front is…
Will some southern stream moisture get drawn into this front? That remains to be seen… but there isΒ a chance and it’s something we will be watching for.
I am also keeping an eye on the setup for next week. It’s one that may feature a pressing cold air mass across the northern half of the country with an active storm track underneath it.
I will have more updates later today. Have a great Tuesday and take care.
Thanks CB….Traveling to northern Ky for basketball Friday night and then to Indy for V-Ball on Saturday. Glad to here it is all going to be light. Hopefully next week we can get a decent shot of cold and better precip amounts. At this point any white stuff falling would be nice. Still looking forward to summer, but as long as it is still the winter season it mise well be cold and snowy.
Thanks again and THINK SNOW!!!
NWS discussion in Louisville is talking up a band of more moderate snow possibly along the Ohio River late tonight. It’s nice to actually see my favorite four-letter word, SNOW, in the forecast. π
Actually…along and SOUTH of ohio rvr and north of Bwg/Lex line. π Read below. E-Town is in that area, love it!
“Best chances for precipitation, whether it be rain or snow, will be
from 3 AM EST to 8 AM EST early Wednesday. Will have to watch for a
moderate band of snow setting up anywhere from along and south of
the Ohio River to along and north of a Bowling Green to Lexington
line between 3 AM EST and dawn. ……..Could even see a few snow bursts through the day on
Wednesday as low levels edge toward a low degree of convective
instability. Again, expecting no real accumulations. Flurries or
sprinkles will linger through the day on Wednesday, along with
mostly cloudy skies.
It’s nice just to have the chance for some flakes!
what the h$!!, hold the ball one more time Lucy, we’ll give it a try!
Snow?!?! Really?! Maybe we will get a “little” excitement before the winter ends!
Nice to see that even in a wimpy winter, the fence along I64 remains intact π …… π
Looks like we will see more salt accumulation than snow.
BTW, remember the good old days when the term “wintry” was used in late fall and early spring and not Winter.
Yes, and look at the SNOW DOME on the NAM over CKY, that is funny!
Good thing CB does not use this blog as a revenue stream, since the no to low snow winter is a huge traffic hit.
An please do not call me negative, since the results are what they are. By nature, the RESULTS are negative…. Unless a snow hater.
yup, right over my house. every. single. time!
IF I see some flakes, that is a good thing. I am even happier that we are talking about cold weather. (shoot, finally got a new winter coat, and haven’t gotten to wear it but once! π )
Thanks, Chris. Even those of us in the souther part of the state are happy to hear you using the word “wintry”. π Have a great day, all!
How the mighty have fallen! You used to be a big snow fan, but like many others, the wimpy trends have lowered your winter expectations.
I am sticking to my guns though- To heck with sould skimmers and ankle biters, since all they are good for is salt crusted cars and accidents. This is true.
Should have been sole skimmers, but in this case a sole slusher…. Or soul crusher…..
12Z GFS is a little colder than 12Z NAM. Neither model would have surface temps. here go below freezing, so roadways will remain in good shape and this snow will be a non-issue for travel. But being in the mid-30s we should at least see flakes rather than rain this time. It should be a nice looking snow falling.
The weekend is trending a little colder in the latest runs as well. Something could be brewing in the southwestern U.S. early next week that would bear watching if it decides to track through the southeast.
Are temps supposed to drop below 30? If not, school will not be denied for most.
Looks to me like along the I-64 corridor, we bottom out around 33 or 34 degrees. In southern KY, you’re looking at 38-40 degrees. So, again it’s an aesthetic snowfall at best…but at this point we’ll take it.
As long as no salt is dropped for a non freeze event- cool.
NOAA says low of 29 in Frankfort for tonight, that would make the roads a little slick. Let’s hope for a Overachiever, we are over due?
I think it is more to with Frankfort being closer to the north side of the fence of I64. Fences keep both cattle in and snow out for some of us.
Bubba I can’t argue with you anymore like I did in the past. I know you’re not being negative, only realistic. What’s that saying about history again? π
I’d gladly take an aesthetic snow at this point. I’ve seen some Tweets that the GFS is trending more precip tonight. Am expecting an update from Chris highlighting that anytime.
looks like a rain event here in southern ky…:(

A MIX OF RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN MOVING INTO THE
AREA AROUND DAWN TOMORROW. THE MIX OF PRECIPITATION WILL LAST THROUGH
MID MORNING BEFORE TRANSITIONING OVER TO ALL RAIN BY LATE WEDNESDAY
MORNING. LITTLE IF ANY SNOW ACCUMULATION IS EXPECTED.
Since the greatest QPF looks to fall around the freezing or just
above freezing line, accumulations of more than a dusting may be
difficult to yield. However, wet-bulbing effect may help cool the
sfc layer more so than what we`re expecting, but the warm grounds
should help counteract snowfall accumulations.
Best chance for snow
accumulations will be along and surrounding a line from E-town to
Carlisle between 5-9am EST. Other colder locations like across
south-central IN will have better temps for snow, but less QPF.
Perhaps a half inch north of the Ohio River is possible, as well.
All that from NWS Louisville π
Warning, some of you may become jealous at seeing this video, some angry, and some may just go insane. I warned you. This is from Africa. AFRICA!!!!!!!!!!!

I should have watched the video before posting. Lol, theres no way thats in ghana.
Looks like very few know how to drive properly on snow
Frankfort season total 1in. Maybe 2 in. after tonight?? Temp down to 42 after a high of 48.
