Good Wednesday evening to one and all. Our taste of winter had a short, but beautiful, stay across the bluegrass state. The snow worked out according to plan and we are now left with a few furries into the overnight.
Where do we go from here?
A seasonal chill will be with us on Thursday as temps hit the low 40s under partly sunny skies. That’s a ho-hum kinda weather day.
The action begins to pick up on Friday as an arctic front dives southeastward into the region. This front should have a weak wave of low pressure along it and will be able to produce some decent precipitation. The models are really beginning to pick up on this…

That should be a touch of rain to start Friday evening, but the thermal profile cools quickly meaning a rapid change to snow. This would continue into Saturday morning with snow showers and flurries around into the rest of the day. That’s a scenario that can put down a light accumulation for many areas.
Saturday will be a very wind and cold day with temps staying in the 20s. Lows by Sunday take a dive into the low and mid teens.
The pattern into next week is ripe for some overrunning moisture. This means we should be on guard for some wintry weather in the form of snow, mix and/or rain. You can see this setup on the following models…

Have a great evening and take care.
So is all the dark green over South Central KY going to be rain? Still sounds interesting 🙂
Thanks, Chris. The weekend sounds interesting, for sure! I hope we get to see more than a few flakes in southern Ky with the next one. Have great evening, everyone.
Lots of snizzle in Lexington! Not showing up on radar though!
or rain…man I hate that word
to clear up my earlier feedback:
lack of snow record mentioned in last post would be if no more snow fell this winter/spring the record for least snowiest winter (Jul-Jun) would now be 1.8 for 2011-12 and 1931-32 would be second with 2.1 inches. We should pick up another few tenths Saturday.
No harm no foul, since I prefer this winter anytime over the last one with a dozen or so snows not breaching 2 inches and most an inch. The only thing that accumulated much was the salt.
This is the lesser of the winter evils IMO.
Time is running out. Almost mid-Febuary and pretty much nothing. I know we get some big snows in March, but the temps overall just don’t give you a great shot at multiple events. If everything works just right we may get lucky and latch onto cold and moisture at the same time. These average temps are inching upward which really makes it difficult for everything to fall into place.
At least we are in the ballgame, usually by this time the models are showing a major rain event with temperatures around fifty.
That is what it shows for the 14-16th. Temps in the 50’s with lots of rain.
I remember a few years ago we had a major three day freeze middle of April. Cold air can plunge down at anytime through April. I also remember a snow and sleet on Derby day.
Don’t see it this year as the pattern as held most of the winter season.
My second post did not go through. In short I changed my mine and wrote that this winter is over you can put a warm fork into the warm moist ground.
On second thought this winter season is over. Although, we could see a surprise snowfall before April. I hope it stays cold enough at times to lay a frost down. I do not want to see a massive amount of six & eight legged critters walking & flying around my surroundings.
Was messing around on the computer…came across Farmer’s Almanac site…it says for Feb 10-13 for our region….cold, with light to moderate snow……oh those “Old Farmer’s”!!!!!
See above????
Sounds like sleet falling outside here (just north of Hazard).
drizzle and light snow flurries in London, temp 33.1*
The 00z NAM sounding at Lexington is all snow Friday. model has evaporational cooling processes winning out. That will be a trend to watch.
GFS is the same showing all snow at Lexington and a mix at BG. qpf up around .2 as well which would be around 2 inches of snow.
How about from Southeast KY down towards Pigeon Forge, TN area for Friday night?
